Chapter 207: Chapter 206: Quick, Turn Around

”Why does he want to kill me?”

Sun Yuting couldn’t understand. She had already explained her identity and cleared up the misunderstanding, so why would he still want to kill her?

’We’re colleagues! There’s no reason for this!’

But Wu Chen didn’t see it that way.

A Golden Eagle Captain was already a high-ranking and powerful figure in the Demon Suppression Bureau.

The only rank higher was the even rarer Cloud Pattern Captain.

So, in Wu Chen’s eyes, you either didn’t offend someone like this at all—you treated them politely, even if it meant swallowing your pride for a while, just to get your hands on a few Martial Arts manuals.

Once you were strong enough, you could draw a line in the sand and have a proper showdown.

Or, it was like the current situation: he’d already attacked her and even touched her. Letting her go would undoubtedly lead to big trouble.

Since he had already offended her, he might as well offend her to death. It was best to leave no corpse, no evidence.

The deep mountains and old forests were full of wolves and tigers. There were plenty of ways to ensure the Demon Suppression Bureau would never find a thing.

This way, he could also avoid her causing trouble for him, openly or secretly, after he returned to the Demon Suppression Bureau.

He had come to the Demon Suppression Bureau to earn Martial Arts, not to waste time on such trivial matters.

”Perhaps you got that Golden Eagle Captain’s uniform by killing a Golden Eagle Captain?”

Wu Chen looked at the person before him thoughtfully. ”Killing you would count as avenging my colleague, right?!”

’I have to give myself a justifiable reason, otherwise I’ll really have some reservations about doing this.’

”You, you... you can send your subordinate back to the Demon Suppression Bureau to find other Captains!”

”Let them come and confirm my identity!” she sobbed. ”We’re on the same side!”

”We’re family!”

Sun Yuting was frantic. She could even feel a stinging sensation on her skin, confirming that he truly intended to kill her.

He could strike at any moment!

The threat of death made her cry as she spoke, so frantic she was becoming incoherent. The feeling of death was tangible, enveloping her in that instant.

But just as suddenly, the oppressive atmosphere dissipated, and she could breathe freely again.

She looked up inexplicably and saw that Wu Chen’s gaze had softened considerably.

”Whatever you have to say, you can say it to the Demon Suppression Bureau yourself.”

In the end, he couldn’t bring himself to do it.

After all, she was here to capture barbarians and had genuinely fought them.

Whatever the barbarians were planning to do in the Great Yun nation, judging by the demonic transformations in Qingzhou, their actions would surely endanger countless common people.

So this Golden Eagle Captain before him was someone who got things done.

And the Demon Suppression Bureau was one of the few institutions in this corrupt dynasty that could still be considered functional.

He could certainly kill her for his own temporary satisfaction, but the ones who would ultimately bear the consequences would be the common folk who toiled in the fields for their food.

There was another reason Wu Chen gave up on the idea.

If he killed her, he would have to kill everyone present.

Otherwise, his crime would be exposed after the survivors were interrogated.

And his plan to keep the barbarian spies alive to earn more merit would naturally fall through.

So he could only pretend he knew nothing and send everyone to the Demon Suppression Bureau as barbarian spies.

When the Demon Suppression Bureau figured out the situation and understood the urgency, they naturally wouldn’t hold it against him too much.

...

The sudden shift from tension to relief left Sun Yuting a little... damp.

Having walked the edge of death, her entire back was soaked with sweat. She felt utterly drained, her cheek resting limply against the ground.

In any case, she had survived.

”You’re worried I’ll hold a grudge over what just happened, aren’t you?”

As the tense atmosphere vanished, the limp Sun Yuting managed a weak smile as she looked at Wu Chen.

”What you did earlier was understandable. In the heat of battle, it’s hard to tell friend from foe. There’s no room for hesitation.”

”Setting aside the fact that we’re colleagues, you were also acting for the sake of the people of Great Yun. I’m not so petty as to hold a grudge over that.”

”Not necessarily.”

Faced with her reasonable words, Wu Chen replied coolly, dismissing the Golden Eagle Captain’s claim.

’You say that now because you’re tied up. Once you’re free, who knows what kind of backup you’ll call?’

’People turning on you in an instant is all too common.’

But Wu Chen wasn’t afraid. He was already in the Leakless Realm. Wu Chen estimated that in the entire Great Yun nation, there were probably only about a hundred people at this level—two hundred at the absolute most.

The available resources could only support so many; any more would be difficult.

A hundred or so people might seem like a lot, but a portion of them were envoys of the Blood Palace where the Blood Slaughter Sect resided, another portion were generals and their attendants in the Great Yun army, and still another portion were the Sect Leaders of various factions.

That didn’t leave many for the Demon Suppression Bureau.

So there was really nothing to be afraid of.

’If they really push me into a fight, worst-case scenario, I’ll just wreck the entire Demon Suppression Bureau!’

Sun Yuting didn’t dare argue further. After all, her life was still in his hands. If she said too much, she might really end up dead here.

She simply decided to wait quietly to be sent back to the Demon Suppression Bureau. She’d be able to get out of this safely then, anyway.

It was just a matter of losing a bit of face in front of her colleagues.

But compared to life and death, such things seemed trivial.

With that brief thought, the matter was settled in her mind.

But Sun Yuting’s mind couldn’t help but recall the feeling of being slapped and kneaded on her chest. The tingling numbness seemed to linger there, and she unconsciously shifted her thighs.

Although she was grinding her teeth in hatred, she didn’t dare show it, much less let any hint of unusual displeasure appear on her face.

She could only bite the tip of her tongue to stop her mind from wandering, then calmly watch Wu Chen to see if he would make another move.

Like his killing intent resurfacing.

Fortunately, Wu Chen’s gaze was calm, as if he had entered his ’sage time.’

But while he appeared expressionless, inwardly he was calling himself an idiot.

’After killing so many people, I still can’t hide my emotions.’

’My killing intent was so obvious just now that she noticed it.’

’But I guess that’s normal. The memories of my past life and this one combined don’t even add up to forty years, and most of them are from my youth.’

’Of course I can’t be like those old martial artists who have lived for a century and are accustomed to life-and-death battles.’

’They can greet the person they want to kill with a smile and fawning courtesy.’

’Today’s incident... this probably won’t be easy to smooth over...’

Wu Chen felt a sense of helplessness.

If he had offended a man today, they could have just had a good, clean fight about it afterward and then gone for drinks and meat.

But it just had to be a woman... and he’d even called her muscle-bound...!

Wu Chen could only curse his bad luck.

’Maybe I should let her touch my own rock-hard muscles to call it even?’

However, as he was lost in thought, a sharp SNAP from behind him caught his attention.

The sound was abrupt in the silent forest, like the twang of a bowstring, sending a jolt through him.

Wu Chen didn’t know exactly what had happened, but he could guess.

But Sun Yuting, who was facing him, saw everything clearly. She watched the figure break free from its bonds, and the writhing, living patterns that twisted across its body.

She jerked her head up to stare at Wu Chen, her eyes filled with terror.

”Quick! Turn around!”

”The barbarian broke free! He’s activated his barbarian tattoos!”

”Hurry and turn around—”

Her last words were a piercing shriek, her voice strained to the breaking point with tension.

But in the next moment, something was stuffed into her mouth, reducing her to muffled whimpers. Her eyes rolled back in their sockets, and it took several breaths before she could breathe properly again.

It was a piece of rotten wood that Wu Chen had casually picked up.

”Shut up. You’re too loud!”

Wu Chen dusted the woodchips from his hands, rose unhurriedly, and twisted around to face the barbarian spy who had broken free.

”I was just wondering how to intimidate this group so they wouldn’t bother me in the future.”

”Since you managed to break free and get yourself all marked up like that...”

”You’ve given me the perfect opportunity.”
