Chapter 35: Chapter 35: What Did You Put in the Mountains?

Hearing themselves being divvied up like pigs for slaughter—you take this many, I’ll take that many, he gets the rest—was too much.

The refugees’ anger had already overwhelmed their fear. Rage had them coiled and ready to strike, desperate to charge forward and fight these Blood Slaughter Sect disciples to the death.

But, to their surprise...

The Blood Slaughter Sect disciples started fighting among themselves first.

When Qin Hee’s Direct Disciple made his move, the hundred or so disciples who followed him naturally couldn’t just stand by and watch.

At least forty of them joined him, charging toward Zhao Rui’s Direct Disciples.

Every slash bit into flesh, aimed for vital points.

Those who knew the truth understood they were here to harvest ”great medicine.” Those who didn’t would have thought they’d arranged a gang brawl on the summit of Broken Blade Mountain.

Standing among the refugees and preparing to make his move, Wu Chen was also stunned. ’This wasn’t in my plan at all.’

’I could join the fray, fish in troubled waters, and wipe them all out. No problem.’

’Or I could wait until they’re done, after they’ve exhausted each other, and then go in for the kill. That would also work nicely.’

In the end, Wu Chen chose not to act.

He decided to wait a little longer. He didn’t want to make too big of a scene and scare the disciples into fleeing down the mountain. That would be a hassle.

After all, even if it were five hundred pigs, it would take him half a day to chase them all down.

Let alone five hundred people.

A moment later, a Direct Disciple of Liu Lanxiang stepped forward to broker a truce. With over thirty corpses of Blood Slaughter Sect disciples lying on the ground, the mutual slaughter finally came to a temporary halt.

However, Qin Hee’s group had lost a Direct Disciple and had clearly suffered the most in the skirmish.

”Fellow disciples, let’s focus on harvesting the great medicine first.”

Liu Lanxiang’s Direct Disciple stepped forward and said, ”It’s getting late. Surely you don’t want to spend the night on the mountain, do you?”

Persuaded by him, the Blood Slaughter Sect disciples once again turned their attention to the refugees, as if their recent bloody brawl was nothing more than a warm-up.

”Kill!”

This time, there was no more pointless talk. With a single command, the Blood Slaughter Sect disciples swarmed toward the refugees.

The two groups were separated by just over ten zhang. It only took a few leaps to close the distance.

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

The Blood Slaughter Sect disciples needed to get the ”great medicine’s” Qi and Blood flowing. Their first four or five slashes were just probing attacks.

Blades met with resounding clangs, sending sparks flying.

The refugees were forced back again and again, but for the moment, there were no casualties.

”Stay close to me. I’m going to start killing.”

Watching the demons charge, Wu Chen turned and spoke to the few people behind him, then his figure erupted into motion.

In an instant, the heads of five Blood Slaughter Sect disciples around him flew high into the air.

Liu Linshan, who was following behind him, had long been waiting. Before the bodies even hit the ground, he deftly pulled out the Martial Arts Manuals.

Then he followed Wu Chen, shrinking back into the group, not lingering in the fight.

A gap appeared in the Blood Slaughter Sect’s encirclement, but another disciple immediately filled it, plugging the hole to prevent the ”great medicine” from escaping.

But as they looked at the corpses of their fellow disciples in the gap, especially the clean cuts on their necks, their eyebrows shot up. They looked at the trembling refugee in front of them, who was still holding his blade.

”You have such good blade skills?”

”...”

Seeing the man was speechless, the disciple couldn’t be bothered to ask any more questions.

As for his dead companions, he could only blame them for being too weak. ’Perfect,’ he thought. ’When the fighting is over, I’ll take their heart’s cores too and claim a reward when I get back to the sect.’

He felt no grief for the deaths of his fellow disciples, only a craving for the sect’s rewards.

Having retreated back into the crowd, Wu Chen looked at the manuals in Liu Linshan’s hands and nodded with satisfaction.

”Not bad. Now I’m going to start killing those Flesh Refining Realm disciples.”

The first wave was just a test of their coordination.

’Have to admit, having an auto-loot function is really convenient,’ he thought.

With that said, Wu Chen leaped toward the nearest Blood Slaughter Sect disciple in the Flesh Refining Realm.

A few refugees were struggling to hold on there, including one who was also in the Flesh Refining Realm.

Wu Chen arrived within three breaths, weaving his way to the front and thrusting his steel blade straight forward.

This was one of Qin Hee’s Direct Disciples. He had already wasted a great deal of Qi Power fighting Zhao Rui’s Direct Disciples earlier.

He could handle fighting refugees, but how could he possibly block a strike from Wu Chen?

He was run through on the spot.

Liu Linshan and the others were a half-step too slow this time and couldn’t keep up with Wu Chen’s speed.

Seeing the corpse about to fall, they simply grabbed its legs and dragged it back into the refugee crowd.

One grabbed the legs while another searched the body. In the blink of an eye, a Flesh Refining Realm Martial Arts Manual was in their hands.

Another gap appeared in the Blood Slaughter Sect’s offensive line. This time, a Direct Disciple had been killed, and his body was instantly dragged into the midst of the refugees.

The disciple who moved up to fill the gap felt something was wrong and was about to call for a Direct Disciple from another team to help.

But a thought appeared in the minds of these disciples:

’Wait! Now that both of Master Qin’s Direct Disciples are dead, he’ll definitely need to take on new ones to inherit his mantle.’

’Doesn’t this mean I have a chance?’

With this thought, they instantly dismissed the idea of calling for help. They figured they might as well take the Direct Disciple’s heart’s core back for a reward later.

Can’t let it go to waste.

Wu Chen moved through the crowd. As the Direct Disciples were slain one by one, the pressure on the refugees visibly lessened.

Besides the Direct Disciples, the other Blood Slaughter Sect disciples were only around the Eighth or Ninth Layer of the Quenching Body realm. There were quite a few refugees at that level as well.

Moreover, the refugees were fighting for their lives in a state of ”succeed or die trying.”

For a time, the battle reached a stalemate.

Wu Chen continued toward the next Direct Disciple. As he passed the edge of two Blood Slaughter Sect disciple groups...

He was a bit dumbfounded by what he saw.

’These guys are truly vicious!’

’They’re even killing their own people!’

He clearly saw disciples stabbing their own comrades in the back, showing no mercy whatsoever.

Wu Chen glanced over but paid it no mind. He pushed to the front of the refugees and arrived before another Direct Disciple.

He was now at the Fourth Layer of the Flesh Refining Realm, a full three minor realms higher than these disciples.

In this kind of battle, with him being so many realms higher, none of them were his match for even a single exchange.

In a flash, another Direct Disciple fell, their body dragged back into the refugee crowd.

Then the third, the fourth...

Every one of the Blood Slaughter Sect disciples had their own ulterior motives. Watching the Direct Disciples get killed, it didn’t even occur to them that something was wrong.

They just felt that once this trial was over, it would be their chance to become a Direct Disciple.

They could get a reward for the ”great medicine” and have a chance to become a Direct Disciple.

It was truly a double blessing!

...

「At the Medicine-Planting Villa, in the small building.」

The banquet hall.

The atmosphere was heavy.

Especially for Qin Hee. The veins on his arm bulged, and the wine cup clutched in his five fingers was already covered in cracks from the pressure, ready to shatter at any moment.

His expression was grim as he stared down, silent.

He couldn’t accept the fact that his most prized Direct Disciple had been killed on the mountain.

Amidst the heavy atmosphere, Zhao Rui and Liu Lanxiang, for once, weren’t laughing and chatting. However, they didn’t miss a beat in picking up food and drinking their wine.

After all, it wasn’t their Direct Disciples who had died, so it wasn’t their place to be sad.

Qian Fugui had also wiped away his usual smile. He stared with a pained expression at the expensive wine cup, which was now riddled with cracks.

But he didn’t dare say anything, merely continuing to place food on Qin Hee’s plate.

”Old Qin, try to look on the bright side. There are plenty of talented young people in the world. If it comes to it, I can find you another one to inherit your mantle, wouldn’t that solve it?”

”Besides, this isn’t the first or second time you’ve had a disciple die. Just get used to it!...”

Qin Hee raised his head, his face dark as he stared at Qian Fugui, who was supposedly consoling him.

’Is that how you console someone?’

But he didn’t explode in anger, nor did he lash out.

For the sake of the five hundred taels of silver.

But just then, CRACK!

Another sharp cracking sound echoed from his waist. It was the Jade Pendant of his other Direct Disciple.

What this represented was self-evident.

BANG!

At this, the wine cup in Qin Hee’s hand finally gave out, exploding into countless tiny fragments.

In that same instant, Qian Fugui, after only a moment’s pause, displayed a speed belying his physique. He shot up from his seat and firmly pinned Qin Hee down in his chair.

”What?”

Before Qin Hee could speak, Qian Fugui preemptively lashed out:

”Did you all forget that you were the ones who told your Direct Disciples not to hold back and to fight freely?”

”Now that they’re dead, isn’t it your own damn fault?!”

”You were the ones who broke the rules!”

”So sit there and behave! Otherwise, I will report to the sect that you broke the trial’s rules and condoned infighting among disciples!”

Qin Hee trembled with rage but couldn’t utter a word, because just as Qian Fugui said, he had no ground to stand on.

He whipped his head around to face Zhao Rui and Liu Lanxiang, his voice hoarse as he bit out each word:

”So...”

”It was your Direct Disciples who ganged up to kill this old man’s disciples!?”

One-on-one, he was confident his disciples would lose to no one.

On that mountain, only the Direct Disciples of the other two families working together could have brought about his disciples’ deaths.

Zhao Rui and Liu Lanxiang frowned, about to explain. After all, such accusations couldn’t be thrown around lightly.

If the sect Elders found out, they would surely be punished, regardless of the truth of the matter.

But before the explanation could leave their lips.

CRACK! CRACK!

CRACK! CRACK!

Several crisp cracks echoed in quick succession from their waists, deafeningly loud.

The room fell silent, so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

The temperature in the room plummeted as if they’d been plunged into an ice cellar, chilling them to the bone.

They didn’t need to look to know what it was: the Jade Pendants of their Direct Disciples.

Six shattered Jade Pendants in total meant that all six Direct Disciples were dead!

Even Qin Hee, who had just been making accusations, froze upon hearing the successive cracks. The furious aura radiating from him vanished without a trace.

Six Direct Disciples went into the mountains, and all of them were dead!

”They’re all dead?”

”They’re all dead!”

The three of them turned in unison to look at Qian Fugui, their pupils trembling:

”What in the world did you unleash on that mountain?!”
