From Broken Family to Life Winner: A Reborn Mother's Journey

Chapter 624: Chapter 623: The Union of Two Swords (8)

Su Li had witnessed the entire process with her own eyes—from Wu Sheng’s initial strike to the takedown of Song Shengfu, and the teamwork that neutralized the threat and rescued all the hostages.

But… when she tried to recall it later, her mind was a complete blank.

It had all happened so fast, and the movements were more spectacular than any movie’s special effects.

Su Li knew Wu Sheng was skilled, but she’d never imagined just *how* skilled. Besides, she had been busy playing her own part in the operation, so once the chaos subsided, everything felt like a blur.

By the time she finally came to her senses, she was standing at the door, holding the rescued Alice in a daze.

Alice, who had cooperated perfectly with Su Li and Wu Sheng, wore the exact same dazed expression.

“That bastard is as cunning as he is vicious. If it weren’t for the boss, we’d all have been goners.”

Wa Wa Lian pressed Song Shengfu—who had been subdued by Wu Sheng—firmly to the ground, clucking his tongue.

Song Shengfu had been so fearless because he truly believed he had every right to be.

What he’d said earlier wasn’t a lie—he had just told only half the story.

The lighter was just his most obvious gambit. In reality, he had a three-part plan, with each part designed to set the place ablaze and have everyone die together.

Song Shengfu had placed a lit brazier in the pigsty at the backyard farm. The slightest trigger—a gunshot from outside or a few loud shouts from him—would spook the pigs, causing them to knock over the brazier and start a fire. The result: everyone dies together.

In the front yard, he had set up an incredibly clever torch contraption right above the main hall. It was part of his threat to keep Xiao Hong and the others from moving or leaving. A rope was tied to his waist; if anything went wrong, one hard pull would send the torch falling. The result: everyone dies together.

For any normal person, this series of death traps would have been utterly inescapable. But unfortunately for Song Shengfu, he ran into Wu Sheng and Su Li.

As soon as Wu Sheng’s team arrived, they infiltrated the backyard and identified the hidden threat there.

Then, they spotted the abnormality in the front yard as well.

Meanwhile, Su Li hadn’t been idle. She had used her singing to communicate with a crying Alice, and together they had formulated a plan.

It was simple. Wu Sheng would set everything up and toss the medicine, deliberately leaving it by the door to lure Song Shengfu into picking it up. The moment he took the medicine was the signal for Alice to scream and bite him.

As soon as Alice screamed, as planned, all lights and flashlights would switch on simultaneously.

Song Shengfu had claimed to have a knife to Alice’s throat, but that was a lie. Alice had conveyed through her crying that he didn’t have a knife, only… methamidophos.

That’s why Alice dared to bite him. As her bite drew Song Shengfu’s attention, Wu Sheng, who was waiting at the door, sprang into action. A throwing knife flew through the air with practiced ease.

And it truly was a throwing knife. It shot out with a SWOOSH, its accuracy beyond question.

Wu Sheng moved in right behind the knife, catching the lighter and attacking Song Shengfu.

Simultaneously, the team in the backyard removed the brazier, averting that crisis, while the team in the front yard appeared to rescue Alice and neutralize the torch trap.

Wu Sheng’s coordination with his team was flawless. Their silent understanding had been forged through countless life-or-death situations. Each member performed their role, working together in perfect harmony.

To an outsider, the scene was dizzying, even bewildering.

It was all over in under a minute.

As Song Shengfu was captured, he screamed, still unable to believe what had just happened. The look on his face was as if he’d seen a ghost.

“Ah! I don’t believe it! I don’t believe it! How is this possible? How?! You’re demons! Demons!”

Song Shengfu’s screams snapped Su Li back to reality.

“Wu Sheng, are you okay?”

Su Li immediately went to check on Wu Sheng.

“I’m fine, just got splashed with a little methamidophos,” Wu Sheng replied instantly. “What about you? Are you all right?”

“I’m fine.” Su Li nodded emphatically. “Where did it get you? You need to wash it off quickly.”

“Okay, I’m going now. Don’t worry,” Wu Sheng said, having already walked over to Su Li.

As Su Li looked into his bright eyes and saw his smile, her racing heart finally began to slow.

“Alice, are you okay?” Su Li asked hastily, feeling the girl stir in her arms.

“I’m fine. You can speak our language! You’re amazing.” The fact that this little girl, Alice, could cooperate in the operation clearly showed she was very brave.

After praising Su Li, she immediately looked at Wu Sheng. “You’re even more amazing!”

She even gave him a thumbs-up.

Su Li didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. She untied the ropes from the girl’s body and translated for Wu Sheng, “She says you’re even more amazing.”

Wu Sheng patted Alice on the head. “You were very brave, too.”

With Song Shengfu subdued, the teacher, Xiao Hong, and all the children were rescued as quickly as possible and moved away from the house, which still carried the faint smell of methamidophos.

“Alice!”

“Dad!”

Tears streamed down Cook’s face as he hugged Alice. He had woken up after being knocked unconscious by Wu Sheng, but at that moment—just as Su Li was tossing the medicine to Song Shengfu—his mouth had been covered, and he hadn’t been able to move.

Everything that followed made Mr. Cook feel as if he were in a dream.

Holding his daughter, whom he had thought was lost forever, was the only thing that felt real.

After moving the victims to safety, Wu Sheng and Captain Zhang quickly swept the house for any remaining safety hazards.

At that point, Su Li finally returned to her professional role, grabbing a microphone to start her report as a journalist.

Everything that had just happened had been recorded. Now, Su Li needed to deliver a live, on-scene report.

In addition to the rescue, the bus in the manure pit was also pulled out.

There really was a bus in the manure pit, just as they’d been told. What no one expected, however, was to find the bus driver’s body inside.

The teacher, Xiao Hong, who had been asking about the driver’s whereabouts ever since she was rescued, fainted on the spot when she saw his body.

Song Shengfu had been using the driver to threaten Xiao Hong, but in reality, the driver had been dead all along.

As for why the driver had driven into the manure pit, it must have been under duress. The driver was said to have been an exceptionally kind man.

The kidnapping case ended with one person dead and one female student poisoned.

The student who had been thrown out was poisoned after being splashed with methamidophos. Fortunately, she hadn’t ingested any, so her life was not in danger.

After seeing the bus driver’s body, Su Li took a deep breath and went back to work, conducting on-scene interviews.

The interviews, of course, included Alice and Cook. The two of them gave their statements before heading to the hospital. Besides them, Su Li also briefly interviewed personnel from the embassy.

Li Anna had tried to swoop in and take over the job, but the chief editor immediately shot her down.

Li Anna couldn’t even muster a single word of protest. Her few colleagues, who had always been on her side, were rendered completely speechless.

Before, they could still make snide remarks. But as time went on and the case unfolded, by the time it was all over, they had nothing left to say.

No matter how much they might want to, they couldn’t find a single fault with Su Li’s performance.

Su Li had done what no one else on site could have. Her outstanding abilities were undeniable.

Her seamless coordination with Wu Sheng, the two of them working in perfect sync to save forty-one lives, was an indisputable fact.
