The Duke's Pampered Darling is So Scheming

Chapter 437: Chapter 437: Guarding the Border

Xu Fengchi was completely bewildered. ”I... What did I say?”

Sun was so angry she couldn’t help but poke him. ”You said it! You said that no matter what she chooses in the future, this place will always be half a home to her! How could you say that!”

Xu Fengchi frowned. ”I was speaking from the heart. What, you’re not happy about it?”

”It’s not that I’m unhappy about *that*!” Sun nearly rolled her eyes at him. Remembering they had company outside, she quickly lowered her voice and said through gritted teeth, ”Chutang is a wonderful girl, of course I like her too. But after you said that, how can she possibly become our daughter-in-law in the future?”

She was worried sick. ”Didn’t you see? Rong Qing has been distracted all day. You don’t care about our son one bit!”

’So that’s what this is about.’

Xu Fengchi let out a sigh of relief and waved his hand dismissively. ”If this is what you’re worried about, then I advise you not to waste your energy. It’s impossible for those two.”

Sun’s delicate brows shot up in anger. ”What do you mean, impossible!?”

’Her own son finally finds a girl he likes, and his own father has to go and ruin it!’

”It’s not just me. Go ask Rong Qing and see if he thinks the same way.” Xu Fengchi huffed and leaned back in his chair. ”No one knows a son better than his father. Even if he was interested in Chutang before, he’s probably long since given up on the idea.”

”How could that be?”

Sun was taken aback and was about to retort, but seeing Xu Fengchi’s certain expression, she felt a little unsure.

In truth, she had also faintly sensed that something was off, but she just couldn’t put her finger on it.

Xu Fengchi glanced at her. ”Did you see him take the initiative to say more than a few words to Chutang today?”

Politeness aside, Xu Rongqing really had been intentionally or unintentionally keeping his distance from Ye Chutang all day.

Sun thought back and became uncertain herself.

She knew her own son’s temperament, after all.

No matter how reserved or gentle he was, he wouldn’t be so indifferent in front of a girl he liked.

”Then... then why the sudden change...”

’Just a short while ago, his tone was quite enthusiastic when he mentioned Ye Chutang, wasn’t it?’

Xu Fengchi, in fact, already understood why.

He shook his head and sighed.

”That child Chutang has no interest in him. There’s no need to say so much.”

”But—”

Sun bit her lip. ”But it’s rare for him to find someone he likes. Isn’t it a pity to give up just like that? Feelings can be nurtured. This would be strengthening our family ties. If she were willing to marry into our family, we certainly wouldn’t treat her poorly. Why give up like this...”

Seeing that Sun was still obsessing over this point, Xu Fengchi finally said:

”That’s not the key point. The key is—she already has someone she loves. How could she possibly nurture feelings for someone else? Not even for Rong Qing!”

”What? She— But she didn’t mention it just now, did she?”

Sun felt a little sour inside.

”Which family’s young master could possibly be more outstanding than our Rong Qing, to have caught her eye?”

Xu Fengchi looked at her.

”Have you forgotten who has been running around for her all this time?”

”Of course it’s—”

Sun suddenly froze, her eyes slowly widening.

”You mean... the one from the Dingbei Marquis Mansion!?”

Xu Fengchi was quiet for a moment, then shook his head with a wry smile.

”I’m afraid even she herself hasn’t realized it yet...”

To her, Shen Yanchuan was different from anyone else.

Although he also felt it was a shame for his son, those two were clearly in love with each other. Why get hung up on it?

’It’s always best to help others fulfill their wishes.’

...

Naturally, Ye Chutang knew nothing of the conversation taking place at the Xu Residence.

She sat in the carriage, lost in thought.

Suddenly, Ye Yunfeng spoke up. ”Big Sis, I just remembered I have something I need to see Lord Master about. Why don’t you guys go back first? I’ll get off the carriage here and head over.”

Ye Chutang snapped out of her thoughts and sized him up. ”Didn’t you take the day off today? What’s so important that you need to make another trip?”

Ye Yunfeng scratched his head, looking a little embarrassed.

”It’s about the last time I angered Lord Master. I never got around to apologizing.”

’Oh, that’s right.’

With this kid’s temperament, he was always getting into trouble. Who knows how many times he had infuriated Feng Zhang.

If Feng Zhang didn’t truly appreciate him and couldn’t bear to punish him seriously, given Feng Zhang’s usual methods, Ye Yunfeng would have been black and blue long ago.

Now that many matters had come to a close, Ye Chutang didn’t restrict them and simply nodded.

”Go on, then. Remember to thank Lord Master on my behalf.”

Feng Zhang coming forward with Xu Fengchi to impeach Xu Jie had been a great help to her.

Although he had never mentioned it, she was indebted to him for it.

Ye Yunfeng understood immediately. ”You got it!”

He lifted the curtain, and with a single leap, jumped down from the carriage.

Xiao Wu blinked their eyes and let out a full burp.

’I really ate a bit too much today.’

Without even looking up, Ye Chutang called out to Ye Yunfeng, ”No need to bring back any snacks for Xiao Wu today.”

Xiao Wu: !!!

But Ye Yunfeng had already replied, ”Got it!”

The sound of his voice was still ringing in the air as his figure vanished from sight.

Only then did Ye Chutang raise an eyebrow.

’This kid... It’s only been a short while, but his skills have improved again...’

...

Ye Yunfeng first went to the Imperial College, only to find out unexpectedly that Feng Zhang hadn’t come in today either.

Ever since Feng Zhang impeached Xu Jie at the imperial court meeting, he hadn’t returned to the Imperial College for nearly half a month.

This was highly unusual.

Feng Zhang spent most of his time here, sometimes not even returning home for days on end.

This was the first time he had been gone for so long.

But this didn’t deter Ye Yunfeng. He then went to Feng Zhang’s residence.

Feng Zhang didn’t live at the General Zhen Country Mansion but in a small, private courtyard of his own for the sake of peace and quiet.

Fortunately, however, Ye Yunfeng knew where this place was.

So, when the servant announced Ye Yunfeng’s arrival, Feng Zhang was taken aback.

Ye Yunfeng waited outside the door for a good while before finally being let in.

As soon as Feng Zhang saw him, he got straight to the point. ”What urgent business do you have with me?”

’At this time, shouldn’t Ye Yunfeng be with his big sister and third brother?’

Ye Yunfeng was just about to speak when, out of the corner of his eye, he saw a longsword resting on the table and froze.

He recognized it as Feng Zhang’s personal sword.

It had been passed down to him by Feng Cheng, and Feng Zhang rarely took it out.

’Now, this...’

Ye Yunfeng asked in astonishment, ”Lord Master, where are you going?”

Feng Zhang gave him a somewhat surprised look.

’This kid’s got a good eye, and a quick mind.’

’He’s only been here a moment, yet he could guess I was preparing to leave.’

Feng Zhang didn’t hide it from him, saying directly, ”Xia City.”

Ye Yunfeng was even more stunned.

Xia City was located at the Northwest border, a strategic fortress.

’What is Lord Master suddenly going there for?’

”The end of the year is approaching. Xia City is a thousand li away. If you go now, when will you be back?”

Feng Zhang’s gaze fell upon the sword, and he shook his head.

”I’m not coming back.”

Ye Yunfeng was dumbfounded.

A guess surfaced in his mind.

He asked tentatively, in disbelief:

”You’re going... to guard the border!?”
