The Duke's Pampered Darling is So Scheming

Chapter 249: Chapter 249: Purse

Ye Chutang casually handed over a piece of paper.

”Go fill this prescription for two doses of medicine and take them to Su Pei’er. She just had a miscarriage and suffered a fright. Her body is at its weakest right now, so she needs proper recuperation.”

Ye Yunfeng was stunned for a moment. He hadn’t expected his older sister to still be thinking about this.

”Alright!” Since he had nothing to do at home anyway, Ye Yunfeng was happy to be an errand boy.

Ye Chutang then took out a purse. ”Also, take this silver to her. The entire Han Family estate has been burned to the ground. She’s penniless with nowhere to go, so she must have some silver on her.”

Ye Yunfeng weighed it in his hand, a little surprised. ”Sister, you haven’t even recovered yourself, yet you’re worrying about so much! Ever since Han Yao and his father were captured, the Princely Heir arranged a place for her to live. Someone is taking care of all her food, clothing, and daily needs. Why are you still bothering with this?”

Su Pei’er was Han Yao’s concubine and had a very close relationship with him. Now, with the Han Family’s affairs still under investigation, she was naturally a person of interest.

She even knew about that secret passage. Who knew what else she had up her sleeve, or how many secrets she was hiding?

Shen Yanchuan’s arrangement seemed like surveillance, but it was really more for her protection.

”Hurry back.” Ye Chutang kneaded her slightly sore neck. ”Oh, right. On your way back, remember to stop by Fuyue Building and pick up some Red Date Chestnut Cake for Xiao Wu.”

Ye Yunfeng: ”...Oh.”

He took the items and turned to leave. After a single step, he stopped and looked back, his eyes falling on the Little Milk Group in the courtyard. She was lying beside Ye Jingyan as he read.

”Sister,” Ye Yunfeng said, a rare hesitation in his expression. ”When do you think Xiao Wu will get better?”

Ye Chutang froze.

Ye Yunfeng said dejectedly, ”She could call for Mother when she was only eleven months old. But ever since that incident three years ago, she just...”

It was impossible not to care.

Their youngest sister had been doted on, utterly adored, and was exceptionally bright. But now, whenever she wanted something or had something to say, she could only try her best to gesture with her little hands.

”Just now, I was thinking how great it would be if she could speak and just call out ’Fourth Brother’ to me through the window.”

Ye Yunfeng was usually a carefree and easygoing person, but when he saw Xiao Wu pattering over just now to gesture eagerly at him, he felt a weight pressing down on his heart.

They had tried many methods over the past three years, but none had succeeded.

Xiao Wu remained unable to speak.

Once, Ye Yunfeng tried to coax her into speaking in private. He taught her for a full hour, a rare show of patience from him, but it was no use.

In the end, Xiao Wu herself seemed to get anxious. She bit her lip, her eyes turning red as tears streamed down her face.

Ye Yunfeng’s heart ached for her so much that he slapped himself right then and there. He never brought up the subject again after that.

’But now we’re back in the Capital City, and Xiao Wu is gradually getting older. Is she going to be like this forever?’

Ye Chutang lifted her gaze, following his line of sight.

As if sensing their gazes, Xiao Wu tilted her little head to look over. She waved her small hand excitedly in their direction, her eyes curving into a brilliant smile.

”Let her be.”

Ye Chutang was quiet for a moment. Then, for some unknown reason, the corners of her lips curved up slightly, a gentle, warm light glinting in her eyes.

”When she wants to talk, she will. If she doesn’t want to for her whole life, that’s fine too. I can support her forever, anyway.”

...

”COUGH, COUGH COUGH...”

Su Pei’er broke into a violent coughing fit. A young maidservant quickly poured some hot water and helped her drink it, gently patting her back to soothe her breathing.

”Miss, why are you coughing so badly? Should I go ask them to fetch a doctor?”

Su Pei’er’s coughing finally subsided, and she shook her head.

”There’s no need to trouble them. I probably just caught a chill these past couple of days. I’ll be fine soon.”

The young maidservant said worriedly, ”But... but Miss, right now you’re—”

’The child was gone, yet her mistress didn’t even have time to grieve. This postpartum confinement was spent in constant fear and torment.’

She didn’t want to upset her mistress by saying it aloud, but she couldn’t suppress the indignation in her heart. ”Speaking of which, it’s all Mr. Han’s fault! If it weren’t for him, you wouldn’t have fallen into such a state!”

They had gone to great trouble to rescue him from the fire, but he turned around and knocked them both unconscious, then threatened Doctor Ye with a knife—

”Enough.” Su Pei’er handed the bowl to her and leaned back against the bed to rest.

”How can we just let it be?” The young maidservant was furious just thinking about it. ”Who knows what crime he’ll be convicted of this time? If he implicates you, Miss—”

KNOCK, KNOCK.

The voice of a guard came from outside the door. ”Miss Su, Fourth Young Master Ye is here.”

The young maidservant’s eyes flew wide with shock.

Su Pei’er was also stunned for a good while before she finally came to her senses and immediately tried to throw off her quilt and get up.

”An honored guest has arrived. Allow this humble one to wash up and change—”

”Miss Su, there’s no need to trouble yourself.”

A young man’s clear, bright voice came from outside the door. ”I’m just here to deliver some medicine on behalf of my older sister. She said that the weather has been cold lately, and since you’re weak, Miss Su, you should rest well in bed.”

It seemed Ye Yunfeng was speaking to the guard.

”Please give this medicine to Miss Su. Her personal maid has gotten medicine from my sister before, so she knows how to brew it.”

The guard’s attitude was polite and eager.

”Rest assured, Fourth Young Master Ye! Since it is a request from Miss Ye, we will naturally do our best!”

Ye Yunfeng did not linger and left soon after.

Only then did the guard push the door open and place the two packets of medicine on the table.

”Miss Su.”

His attitude, compared to the previous two days, had clearly changed dramatically.

—Ye Yunfeng delivering the medicine in person meant he represented Ye Chutang herself.

The young maidservant waited until the door was closed before walking over, both shocked and overjoyed.

”Miss! Doctor Ye really does still care about you! This—huh?”

An exquisite purse fell out.

Su Pei’er’s gaze fell upon it, and her heart suddenly stirred.
