The Duke's Pampered Darling is So Scheming

Chapter 136: Chapter 136: Misfortune and Fortune

Ye Chutang said, ”When the incident happened back then, it was all so sudden. I fled with Yan, A Feng, and Xiao Wu, and we never had the chance to handle the funeral arrangements for Mother, Father, and our older brother. Now that I have returned, it is my duty as a daughter of the Ye Family to do so.”

She curtsied to Ye Heng. Her expression was gentle, but her tone was firm and resolute.

”Second Uncle, Chutang is endlessly grateful for your kindness. I have come today to formally discuss this matter with you, and I hope you will grant my request.”

Ye Heng was caught completely off guard.

He had considered countless possibilities, but he had never imagined Ye Chutang would come for *this*!

”You... you—” Ye Heng’s throat went dry. He couldn’t think of a response for a moment, and his brows furrowed. ”This is a serious matter. It must be handled with caution. How can you just do it on a whim?”

After the incident back then, as Ye Zheng’s own younger brother, he had stepped up to handle all the funeral arrangements.

To this day, the memorial tablets were still established in his name.

Who would have thought that after all this time back in the capital, Ye Chutang would still be fixated on this matter!

Ye Chutang shook her head. ”Second Uncle, you misunderstand. This is not an impulsive idea. Before, when we were away, it was one thing for you not to know. But now that we have returned home, how can we continue to trouble you? If others were to learn that we siblings are still alive yet do not personally tend to our own parents’ memorial tablets, it would be far too improper. Don’t you agree?”

Ye Heng choked on his words.

Logically, there was no fault to be found in Ye Chutang’s words. But if this were to happen, it would be a formal declaration to the world that she and her siblings had returned.

Moving the graves and re-erecting the tombstones would erase everything he had done before.

Then everyone would know that the Ye Family... was still under the control of Ye Chutang and her siblings!

Of course, Ye Heng was completely against it.

”You have a point, but this is no small matter. How can it be decided so rashly? Besides, it’s been so long. To stir things up again like this would probably be...”

He made one excuse after another, his words clearly indicating his refusal.

Ye Chutang had long anticipated this reaction and wasn’t surprised. She just smiled faintly and interrupted him. ”I understand all of your concerns, Second Uncle. But this is the duty of a child; there is no hardship involved. Also, you can rest assured that we will handle everything ourselves. We won’t trouble you. After all, you’re at your wit’s end right now. How could you possibly have the time or energy for other matters?”

It was like a sharp slap to the face. Rage instantly surged in Ye Heng’s heart.

”You—”

Ye Chutang was clearly mocking them!

It was as if she was afraid the fire wasn’t burning big enough!

Ye Shixian’s expression changed as well, and she laughed in anger. ”How interesting. If it weren’t for my father, your parents and brother would have been left to rot in the wilderness! And now you think you can do whatever you want? I think you’re just deliberately stirring up trouble!”

Ye Chutang’s expression hardened slightly. She merely glanced at her, and Ye Shixian’s heart skipped a beat, her words suddenly catching in her throat.

That single glance was dark and calm, without a ripple, yet it seemed to carry a bone-deep chill that was utterly startling.

A cold shiver ran down Ye Shixian’s spine. The rest of her words were stuck, unable to come out.

But it was only for an instant. Ye Chutang withdrew her gaze, as if that fleeting iciness had been an illusion.

She said faintly, ”Since Second Uncle is so busy, I won’t disturb you any longer. I will find someone to choose an auspicious date to properly resettle my parents and brother. There’s no need for you to worry, Second Uncle. I will handle it.”

With that, Ye Chutang gave a slight nod and turned to leave without waiting for Ye Heng’s reply.

Ye Heng opened his mouth, wanting to call her back, but the memory of her detached, calm tone as she left made his chest tighten inexplicably.

Ye Chutang had made it clear today that she was only here to inform him! Whether he agreed or not, she would do it regardless!

And now she had a powerful backer, so Ye Heng didn’t dare to offend her lightly.

If he were to offend the Eldest Princess as well, then he—

”Father! You just let her leave like that!?” Ye Shixian was fuming.

Ye Heng was just as frustrated. ”What else could I do? Why do you think she dares to be so arrogant?”

Ye Shixian gritted her teeth, utterly unconvinced.

”She’s only acting like this because she saved the Eldest Princess’s life. She really thinks she’s somebody now!”

Every time she thought about bringing Ye Chutang to the Long Princess Mansion for the Chao Hua Banquet, she was filled with regret.

Ye Heng glanced at the mess in the courtyard and forcibly suppressed his anger.

”Forget it! This isn’t something that can be done in a day or two. Let’s ignore her for now. Let her be arrogant for a few more days. Once the storm with the Han Family blows over and Han Tong secures the position of Minister of the Ministry of Rites, we’ll see what she can do then!”

Ye Heng snorted coldly. ”Zhao Hanguang made such a huge mistake; he won’t escape a death sentence! The most suitable person for this position... is Han Tong! Ye Chutang has offended the Han Family. She won’t have an easy time of it in the future!”

That Han Yao is a good-for-nothing, but his father is the type to seek revenge for the smallest grievance.

When the time comes, he’ll have plenty of ways to deal with Ye Chutang!

...

Ye Chutang led Xiao Wu out the door.

Xiao Wu looked up at her.

’Their words just now were so harsh. They must have made Big Sis upset again.’

Sensing her gaze, Ye Chutang lowered her head slightly, but the corners of her lips curved into a smile.

”It’s still early. Want to go for a walk?”

Xiao Wu froze for a second, then nodded vigorously.

’Looks like Big Sis really is in a bad mood. A walk to clear her head is a good idea!’

Half an hour later, on the second floor of a teahouse, Xiao Wu stared blankly as a young lady lifted the curtain and entered.

She looked to be in her teens and seemed to be a servant girl from some household.

’Who... is this? I’ve never seen her before!’

”Doctor Ye.”

The young woman bowed respectfully to Ye Chutang, her expression apologetic. ”My mistress wasn’t feeling well before I left, so I was a bit late. I apologize for making you wait.”

Ye Chutang shook her head, not minding at all. ”She recently had a pregnancy scare. She must get plenty of bed rest right now. It’s fine.”

As she spoke, she handed over a wrapped package of medicine from the table.

”By the way, this is her medicine for the next three days. Take it back and have her brew and drink it.”

The young servant girl’s face filled with gratitude. ”Thank you, Doctor Ye!”

Ever since she had personally witnessed Ye Chutang save Su Pei’er, she was convinced that Doctor Ye was the best physician in the world!

Ye Chutang poured a cup of tea and smiled faintly. ”You’re welcome. Head back early today and take good care of your mistress.”

The young woman left after expressing her profuse thanks.

Xiao Wu propped her chin on her hands, her face full of confusion. But seeing that her Big Sis had no intention of explaining, she didn’t ask any questions.

’Anyway, Big Sis always has her reasons for doing things!’

Xiao Wu ate a piece of pastry.

Just then, a sudden commotion erupted from the street below.

Xiao Wu looked outside curiously and saw a troop of soldiers on horseback galloping past.

Ye Chutang gave it a casual glance and took a light sip of her tea.

...

BANG—!

The main gates of the Han Family estate were kicked open forcefully! The man in the lead bellowed:

”Where is Han Tong!?”
