Chapter 44: Chapter 32: The Blind-Eyed but Clear-Hearted Marquis

Listening to Ji Liruo’s desperate and sorrowful cries behind her, Anning sighed lightly, then no longer hesitated, and walked with the Commandery Princess Yong’an towards Tianmiao. Together with Tianmiao, they went towards the main gate of Xuanling Temple.

”No—! Don’t go! You can’t break off the engagement, no! Mother, help me, I’ve always planned for you, now please help me, beg them, go ask them not to break off the engagement, please...” Ji Liruo suddenly lifted her head to look at the departing back of Anning, stood up, and shook Madam Ji’s shoulders frantically as she roared.

Madam Ji’s expression was complicated. She tightly hugged the nearly delirious Ji Liruo, then closed her eyes, tears slowly streaming down.

...

Back at the Prime Minister’s Mansion, Madam Ji anxiously awaited news from the Dingguo Mansion about the broken engagement, then turned to look at Ji Liruo, who sat dazed by the window with vacant eyes staring outside, her heart filled with pain and regret.

It was all because she, as a mother, was too selfish, too foolish, that her daughter became like this.

Also causing her daughter to lose her love forever...

However, the news of the broken engagement arrived without incurring her husband’s wrath. Madam Ji sent someone to inquire at the front courtyard, only to learn that Dingguo Mansion had indeed come to break off the engagement, but the reason given was that the host of Xuanling Temple had found their horoscopes incompatible, regrettably leading to the dissolution. And nothing about what happened at Xuanling Temple had leaked out as a rumor.

Dingguo Mansion had handled the matter perfectly.

It was impeccably done.

”Liruo, it’s over, Dingguo Mansion...” Madam Ji said with some relief. If the Prime Minister and Ji Liruo’s father had known the true reason for the broken engagement, how could a mother and daughter bear their anger?

Upon hearing the servant report the reason for Dingguo Mansion’s dissolution, the previously unresponsive Ji Liruo finally slowly turned her head, showing Madam Ji a desolate smile.

”Mother, see, even to this extent, the Young Marquis is still this gentle. Even after how I treated him, he still did this much for me.” Ji Liruo’s voice was very soft, but as she spoke, tears once again slowly flowed down. But this time, it seemed the view in front of her was somewhat different. Blurred, with some redness.

”But such a good person, I somehow lost him...” Ji Liruo laughed with tears.

Madam Ji turned her head to look at Ji Liruo, wanting to comfort her, only to be frightened out of her wits by the tears on her face.

Those were tears of blood!

”Liruo, don’t scare your mother.” Madam Ji rushed forward to hold Ji Liruo, crying, ”Things have come to this, don’t torture yourself anymore. It’s all your mother’s fault. If not for me, you wouldn’t have turned out this way, nor would you have missed the Young Marquis.”

Ji Liruo turned a deaf ear, no longer speaking, only shedding silent tears.

”Liruo, if you truly have a heart, if you truly feel remorse for the Young Marquis, why not think of a way to make amends?” Madam Ji, looking at her daughter who had resigned herself to death, uttered impossible words foolishly.

Unexpectedly, Ji Liruo suddenly straightened up. Then she wiped away her tears.

”Yes, Mother, I can’t keep making mistakes.” Ji Liruo no longer wept, which made Madam Ji even more afraid.

”Liruo, don’t do anything foolish.” Madam Ji said worriedly.

”I won’t. Never again.” Ji Liruo smiled, and there was a bit of vitality in her eyes, ”Mother, rest assured, I won’t do anything to the Young Marquis. I’ll only watch him from afar and bless him. Such a wonderful person deserves better.”

Seeing Ji Liruo regaining her spirits and hearing these words, Madam Ji was finally somewhat relieved.
