Chapter 618: Chapter 296: The Orange People’s Uprising

The people of Orange in Bloemfontein are easy to talk to, but that doesn’t mean the rural Orange people are the same as those in the city.

Due to the economic similarities between the Orange Free State and the original Transvaal Republic, most people in the Orange Free State live in the countryside.

And the rural Orange people are mostly dependent on large landlords, so managing them is not easier than in the cities. Moreover, the sudden influx of Transvaal people last time further strengthened the power of the Transvaal countryside.

Meanwhile, the Transvaal provisional government had its sights set on the Orange countryside, sending its henchmen, the Transvaal Rebel Army, to start a ”go-to-the-countryside” movement.

In towns like Bloemfontein, the Transvaal Rebel Army found it relatively easy to succeed, but once out of the city, they hit a hard wall.

Bosland Village, west of Bloemfontein.

A squad of Transvaal Rebel Army cavalry attempted to enter Bosland Village for taxation activities.

”What! Taxation?” Village Chief Kareem of Bosland Village looked at this group of unwelcome guests with some amusement.

”Village Chief Kareem, this is an order from the Bloemfontein Governor’s Mansion, so we hope you understand the government’s difficulties.”

In front of Kareem, these Transvaal Rebel Army soldiers dared not be arrogant, because Kareem had two or three dozen armed men around him, eyeing them coldly.

”This is truly a joke. I’ve lived in Orange for so many years and have never paid taxes. You are the first ones to dare to ask me for money.”

Kareem wasn’t joking. In the two Boer nations, just like in the early United States, there was no tax collection department, so Kareem’s grandfather’s generation had never paid taxes.

”Times have changed, Village Chief Kareem. In the past, Orange was under Boer rule. Now, we are all under British rule, so laws and other aspects naturally follow the British! So, you can’t view the present with old-fashioned traditions.”

”Bah, I never agreed to merge with Cape Town in the first place. Our Orange Free State was completely sold out by a bunch of cowards. And now, indeed, the British have turned against us. I’m telling you, not a penny of so-called taxes.”

”Village Chief Kareem, I advise you to hand over the money honestly. The British are much stronger than we Boers!”

”Heh, the British are indeed strong, but that depends on their position. Originally, the Orange Free State could completely have more autonomy. If it weren’t for you Transvaal people acting as their accomplices, willingly becoming British dogs, there wouldn’t be so much trouble now!”

”Captain!”

Sure enough, under Kareem’s taunts, some Rebel Army soldiers were very annoyed. Since the majority of the Rebel Army were Transvaal people, they looked to their captain, hoping to teach this stubborn old Orange man a lesson.

However, the Rebel Army captain didn’t do that. The local Orange Free State had considerable civilian power, especially in the countryside, with its own spontaneously formed armed forces. He had only a dozen or so men and didn’t want to immediately turn against the old man Kareem.

If there were a confrontation now, his team might not make it through today. Not to mention the twenty or thirty militiamen beside Kareem, they could call more people from the village for backup. If surrounded, he surely would face dire consequences.

This is the advantage of the system where everyone is a soldier. The reason East Africa could easily take the Transvaal Republic was completely due to a numerical advantage.

The sheer number of East African troops was almost a quarter of the entire population of the Transvaal Republic. Moreover, they showed no mercy from the start, giving the Transvaal Republic no time to prepare, so the Republic naturally couldn’t cope.

The situation now facing Kareem with the Rebel Army is completely different. Even after three months of expansion, the Rebel Army has only barely reached a size of just over six thousand men.

There are many villages in the Orange Free State, and Bosland Village, where Kareem resides, is just one of them. These villages mostly consist of Orange people, and more Transvaal people are in towns and mines, so they can be trusted by the British to balance the Orange people.

In the cities, the British show favoritism, allowing Transvaal people to act recklessly, but the countryside tells a different story. The Orange people, dissatisfied with the British’s unequal treatment, are linking up among the villages, intending to expel the British and their henchmen from the Orange Free State.

So Kareem continued to clamor: ”Hmph, you Transvaal people still want to collect taxes. You’re really tired of living. How much more comfortable it would be to stay obediently in Bloemfontein, don’t think just because you have weapons you can do whatever you want. If you dare come to Bosland Village again, I’ll make sure you bleed.”

”Alright, very well, Village Chief Kareem, it seems you’ve made your choice. I hope you won’t regret your words today. We’re leaving!” The Transvaal Rebel Army’s captain had to order a retreat.

Then this squad of the Rebel Army, who had arrogantly entered the village, now had to retreat back to Bloemfontein with their tails between their legs. Naturally, they didn’t care, intending to report back to the government and return to trouble Bosland Village again later.

It wasn’t just Bosland Village. Around Bloemfontein today, many villages experienced this scene, though each village made different choices. Some, like Kareem, stood firm; others, fearing the large army from Bloemfontein, chose to swallow their anger, while some villages saw bloodshed, with the Transvaal Rebel Army mainly suffering losses.

And Kareem wouldn’t sit idle either after offending the Rebel Army in Bloemfontein city today. These Orange people began a national campaign of linking together.

Large landlords across the Orange territory began exchanging letters, and even the original Orange rulers in cities, who had already been marginalized by the Transvaal people, were eager to coordinate with the countryside’s actions to regain control over cities like Bloemfontein.

On February 28, 1881.

Unwilling to be stripped of power, Orange Bloemfontein city councilors and Orange citizens fired the first shots to overthrow the joint tyranny of the British and Transvaal people.

Angry Orange people stormed police stations, barracks, and the puppet parliamentary government, as well as the Transvaal provisional government.

Orange people looted the Transvaal people and British, but soon, their resistance was declared a failure under the suppression of the Transvaal Rebel Army. The Transvaal provisional government took over Bloemfontein and retaliated against the Orange people in the city, executing many participants of the rebellion.

In March, the rural areas of Orange announced the establishment of a new Orange Free State government, defining the British and Transvaal people as invaders, and the two sides formally reached a standoff.

The Cape Town government then supported the Transvaal Republic in suppressing the Orange people, promising that after quelling the rebellion, a portion of Orange people’s land would be given to the Transvaal Republic.

East Africa also received news of the Orange Free State erupting into civil war, not only from intelligence from the National Defense Security Bureau but also because representatives of the new Orange government sought help from East Africa by crossing the border.

Facing this sudden situation, the East African government had to immediately decide whether to support the Orange people and how to support them, and what benefits East Africa could gain.

From the border to the East African Central Government, there was telegraph communication, so by March 12, the East African government had received the news, at which point the Orange people had already engaged in several skirmishes with the British and Transvaal Allied forces.

Although the Orange people held geographic advantages, their resources and munitions were quickly being consumed, and without external support, it would be difficult for them to contend with the British and Transvaal Allies.
