High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 2766: Chapter 987: The Astute Li Meng

East Wing of the Teaching Building, Room 301.

Magic Potion Class Classroom.

Li Meng stood at the window with a melancholic expression, her arms on the windowsill, fingers tapping the glass absentmindedly, looking at the bright sunshine and lively world outside, feeling utterly miserable.

The earworm she had painstakingly charmed was easily snatched away by Old Li, so she couldn’t use that method to skip class for the time being.

Whenever she thought of the tragic future that brave little bug might face, she couldn’t help but heave a deep sigh—

”Alas!”

”Alas!”

Almost at the same time, another sigh echoed in the empty classroom.

Li Meng glanced sideways towards the source of the sigh—Su Ya, the little fox maid from Greenhill Mansion, was sitting in the front row, resting her chin on her hands, staring at the blackboard with a wistful look. Because she wasn’t in the mansion, she seemed very relaxed. Her fluffy ears had broken free from the restraints of her hair, and her bushy tail hung cozily below the black and white hem of her skirt, swaying back and forth absentmindedly.

”Why are you sighing?”

Li Meng felt a pang of empathy, realizing that the little fox girl was indeed a kindred spirit and a true friend.

Earlier, feeling lonely in the classroom after her cousin and other classmates left, Li Meng had sent a paper crane to Su Ya, asking her to come and ’experience the learning atmosphere of First University.’ Without much hesitation, the fox maid, who had longed to visit the First University, promptly scurried to the classroom.

”I disgraced my lady.”

Su Ya felt uneasy recalling the incident where she cornered the black gemstone cat outside the mansion yesterday afternoon. Indeed, the mansion’s master didn’t show any displeasure and even praised her for acting with principles. But as a fox maid with grand aspirations to become the best member of the mansion, the words ’lacking discernment’ echoed in her mind like a haunting melody.

She even suspected she’d caught an earworm herself.

”How did you disgrace her?”

Li Meng suddenly became interested—there are many ways to shake off negative emotions; comparison is one of the best methods. Just like the song that says, ’The world complains of inequity, he rides a steed while I ride a donkey, but looking back at the cart-pusher, I fare better than below.’ As long as someone else is worse off than you, it’s an effective psychological comfort.

In economic terms, she had a comparative advantage in this emotional transaction.

Su Ya wasn’t aware of her friend’s dark thoughts.

Sighing, she recounted the incident of cornering Zheng Qing outside the mansion yesterday afternoon, ending with a deep sigh: ”—although my lady comforted me saying it’s okay, how could it possibly be okay? As a housemaid, the most important skill is the ability to greet and handle guests... now, I scored zero on this assessment!”

Li Meng looked at the little fox girl with admiration, never knowing she had such ambitions.

Housemaid?

These four words coming from Su Ya’s mouth lacked any persuasiveness!

Li Meng suspected that Su Shijun kept Su Ya in the mansion to prevent her from breaking the laboratory bottles and jars, rather than assessing her or intending to make her a ’housemaid’—in the entire Greenhill Mansion, perhaps only the formidable head maid could shoulder that responsibility.

However, as a good friend, she certainly couldn’t dampen Su Ya’s enthusiasm. So she blinked and immediately found a target for Su Ya to vent her frustration on.

”It’s all Zheng Zha’s fault!”

Li Meng knocked heavily on the glass window, her eyebrows raised in anger.

The glass window buzzed in agreement.

”What?” The little fox girl looked puzzled.

”—If it weren’t for Zheng Zha visiting the mansion, how could you have run into such trouble?” Li Meng deftly shifted concepts, aiming at an absolutely reliable target.

”Exactly! It’s all Zheng Zha’s fault!”

Su Ya’s eyes lit up, her soft ears flattened in her hair suddenly perked up like two small pink and white swords, ready to pierce dozens of transparent holes in that scum.

”Enough of these bothersome matters,” Li Meng, seizing the moment, shifted the topic: ”You mentioned your lady wanted you as a housemaid, so how come you’re free to come today?”

”Because Sister Man is at home today...”

”And what about Dong Dong? Don’t you need to watch over?”

Su Ya’s ears, just raised, drooped into her hair again as she sighed deeply for the nth time: ”Dong Dong now has three Great Elves playing with her, she doesn’t need me anymore.”

She sniffled, paused, and added: ”—she even has a dog named Furry Bean! She spends more time playing with the dog than with me now!”

”I know that dog!” Li Meng immediately frowned: ”My cousin told me, that Furry Bean is also raised by Zheng Zha...and those sprites and Great Elves too, raised by Zheng Zha...”

”It’s all Zheng Zha’s fault!” This time, without guidance, Su Ya easily identified the true enemy.

”It’s all Zheng Zha’s fault!”

Li Meng repeated these words, suddenly inspired, murmuring as she made a list: ”If Zheng Zha hadn’t lied to me about his poor studies, my cousin wouldn’t be watching over my studies so closely every day!”

”And my lady would not carry the stigma of unwed pregnancy at such a young age...”

”Because of Zheng Zha, my cousin fought my idol over a man, putting someone in an unethical position, entrapping someone between loyalty and betrayal!”

”Because of Zheng Zha, my lady has three additional dependents! Have you ever seen a Moon Council member with four kids without being married?”

”He’s not even two-timing! I’m in this class, I know it well! He was flirting with that Gypsy witch throughout his freshman year!”

”Why didn’t you really burn him during last Halloween’s parade?”

At this point, the two little witches fell silent, feeling a growing sense of camaraderie.

”We mustn’t let him off!” Su Ya clenched her fist.

”Definitely not!” Li Meng nodded in shared anger, but suddenly fell into melancholy: ”—But what can we do? In two months, that scumbag will graduate.”

”We must let the adults see his true nature!”

”I suspect Zheng Zha drugged both of them with some mind-altering potion, but I have no proof...”

”Without proof, they won’t hit that scum.”

”Not necessarily.” At that moment, Li Meng grew wiser, crossing one arm over her chest while pinching her chin with the other, thoughtful: ”Even without proof, I think both of them surely want to secretly beat up that scumbag!”

”So...” The little fox girl’s head popped up question marks.

”Our chance has come!”

Li Meng clenched her small fist, a gleam of sagacity flashing in her narrowed eyes: ”—What they can’t do, we’ll do it for them! The ones they’re embarrassed to hit, we’ll hit for them! In short, we’re still minors, even if we cause trouble, it doesn’t matter... The ultimate respect for our idols is to break the legs of any dog daring to covet their beauty!”
