Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 287: Chapter 287 Self-Promotion, Shocking and Unconventional

”Grandfather, your words are inappropriate,” Meng Xinian sat upright, his eyes deep and intense, making people feel tense just by looking at him. His tone was very serious, ”My grandfather was a Supervisor Guard, and so am I. A Supervisor Guard should always keep his promises, especially regarding a matter of a lifetime commitment, it cannot be taken lightly. Since my grandfather had already arranged a marriage for Little and me in the past, then Little is my fiancée, and I will take up this responsibility and honor this promise.”

Meng Xinian glanced at Chiang Xiao, his gaze burning but his voice extremely calm, ”Besides, I am twenty now, and when Little turns eighteen we can apply for marriage, by which time I will only be twenty-five. For a man, thirty years old is still prime time, and twenty-five is just the beginning of maturity, which is perfect. Furthermore, Little is precocious and intelligent. If she were matched with a teenage boy, he might not be able to keep up with her thoughts, being too immature. Little, don’t you agree?”

Pfft!

Chiang Xiao’s face turned red with the effort to hold back.

Agree? Agree with what? Even if what you said makes sense, can I admit it? Can I nod along?

Hey, big brother, I am only thirteen now. Is it appropriate for you to say these things to a thirteen-year-old girl?

And why are you so thick-skinned?

Only entering the ranks of mature men at twenty-five?

She felt he already seemed quite ”mature” at twenty!

Chiang Songhai was not good at expressing himself; he exchanged glances with Ge Liutao and was momentarily at a loss for words.

Meng Xinian was not wrong, after all, looking at it now, he was seven years older than Little, but in a few years, when he was twenty-five and Little was eighteen, it didn’t seem to be a problem.

Chiang Xiao felt a headache coming on, glaring at Meng Xinian, ”Captain Meng, what exactly do you mean?”

This man’s actions were nothing like what she had expected.

Shouldn’t he be opposing marriages arranged by elders, opposing child betrothals? Besides, he’s already at the age to send Q messages; why isn’t he pursuing beautiful members of the cultural troupe or chasing the rich young ladies of Capital City, instead of being entangled with her, a little girl?

”My meaning has always been very clear; that is to fulfill the marriage agreement,” Meng Xinian answered earnestly.

”You’re being way too presumptuous, Captain Meng!” Chiang Xiao said through gritted teeth, ”Let’s put it this way; do you think that as soon as I turn eighteen, I’ll immediately go register for marriage? How is that possible? Without having spent time together, without having been in love and understanding each other, just getting married like that, there will be many problems later on. Therefore, my own plan is to date at the age of eighteen, at least for three or four years. By that time, I’ll be twenty-one or twenty-two, and you will be twenty-eight or twenty-nine. If we don’t get along well and decide to split up, it’s no problem for me; I will still be young at twenty-one or twenty-two, but it’s different for you, you’ll be nearly thirty. If you then have to find someone else, there’s a chance they might find you too old.”

After Chiang Xiao’s lengthy outburst, everyone in the room was staring at her with wide eyes as if they had seen a ghost.

Ge Liutao was so shocked she wanted to come over and cover her mouth.

”What on earth are you saying, child!” She scolded Chiang Xiao with a glare.

Aunt Juan had also listened to Chiang Xiao’s words. For their older generation, where was the concept of dating for years? Even what Ge Liutao did was considered an exception; she had chosen her own partner, defying her parents’ wishes to marry the man she wanted, and she had lived her whole life somewhat unable to raise her head proudly because of it.

But now Chiang Xiao was talking about dating for three or four years, and even said there was a possibility of parting ways if things didn’t work out well. To them, such notions were utterly shocking and outrageous.
