”I… lost?”

Rex fell to his knees, hands on the ground, stunned, like a culprit caught in a mystery anime.

He couldn’t believe it.

After years of training and preparation, determined to make a legendary comeback…

Yet he lost at the first hurdle?

He couldn’t accept it!

A few seconds later, applause shattered his fantasy and pulled him back to reality. At first, it was scattered, as people recovered from the shock of the duel. Then, someone started a wave of cheers, shouting the victor’s name—not his, but the rookie who’d bested him.

The legendary Rex Raptor defeated on his return, had become a stepping stone for a rising star.

”Congratulations to Fujiki Kira, who has defeated Rex Raptor to win the Moonlight Cup!”

Kogashi shouted with excitement.

”What an unbelievable duel! A rookie, in his first tournament, defeating the returning Rex Raptor, and dominating from start to finish! Not only that—his LP remained at a full 4000 the entire duel! A literal perfect game!”

Rex: Please, stop.

”Yes. And based on my years of experience, I’d say this might not even be his limit.” Sasaki added, ”Card Trooper has another effect—when destroyed, its controller draws a card.

After receiving Limiter Removal, all Machines self-destruct at the end of the turn. So Kira can draw three more cards as the Troopers blow up.

Meanwhile, Rex’s field and hand are empty, and thanks to his Reckless Greed, he has to skip his next two Draw Phases. So…”

She didn’t finish, but the implication was clear.

Even if Rex had one more trick, it would be nearly impossible to win.

Not to mention, Kira still had two Machina Fortresses in the graveyard—just a bit of Machine support and they’d be back.

The gap between the two was now too great.

Rex: ”…”

”The youth are truly formidable,” Kogashi said. ”But in any case, let’s congratulate Kira on winning the championship!”

He had a feeling.

This wouldn’t be the last time he’d see Fujiki Kira on the tournament stage.

Or maybe, for Kira, this was just the beginning.

”He won…”

Koji Sato, already in the audience, blinked in disbelief. He pinched himself hard.

Ouch—he wasn’t dreaming.

His kouhai had defeated a legendary duelist.

Suddenly, all the frustration from losing to Kira was replaced by pride.

To think, I was beaten by such an amazing kouhai!

He straightened his back a little.

With Kira crowned champion, celebrations broke out at the dojo. Tomorrow’s Duelist Times would surely headline the victory, and all the trainees felt proud to be associated with the winning dojo.

But no one was more excited than the headmaster.

When the champion was announced, Takeuchi-sensei nearly fainted from excitement, but upon being helped up, he quickly reassured everyone he was fine—just a bit too emotional.

Later, when no one was watching, Takeuchi slipped away, pressing his hand against an inconspicuous wall in the dojo.

A hidden door opened, which only he knew about.

He walked down a secret passage, the only light shining on a single point.

In a transparent case, a card was stored.

Takeuchi murmured:

”Has the one worthy of inheriting this… finally appeared?”

....

”Champion for real! You even took down Rex Raptor, the big boss! Kouhai, you’re amazing!”

As they left the venue, Koji Sato was a changed man, rushing over to help carry Kira’s bags.

”Hey, why are you still carrying your stuff? Let me help—”

Kira tried to refuse, but Sato was too enthusiastic.

”By the way, I heard that there’s no order in learning, so from now on, you’re the senpai, and I’ll be your kouhai…”

Kira: ”…”

”Also, you’re so calm—even after winning, you don’t seem fazed. If it were me, I’d be floating by now.”

Kira was happy, but he’d already predicted this outcome, so he wasn’t too surprised.

He was more concerned about when the prize money would arrive.

The more he learned about this world, the more he realized that money wasn’t everything—but without money, you had nothing.

Like Kaiba and Chazz, who have money to burn, or Yugi, whose family runs a card shop, or Jaden, who seems to come from wealth.

Yusei may be from the slums, but he’s a heavyweight who built a top-tier deck from scratch, even printing cards himself.

Main characters always get new cards as the story progresses.

So dueling is a money pit—unless you have card-printing powers, most people just have to pay up.

That’s why Duel Academy, with Kaiba’s sponsorship, is such a great place.

”…”

The two walked out of the venue.

In the shadows, a figure in a black cloak watched Kira’s back as he left.

Under the hood, a dangerous smile curled.

A green light flashed in the darkness as if ghostly flames flickered in his eyes.
