The Shadow of Great Britain

Though many musicians take pride in composing coronation anthems, it is clear that Sir Arthur Hastings, an emerging talent among the younger generation on the British music scene, does not share this view. And from the perspective of the Coronation Committee, the esteemed members did not consider him a suitable choice either.

Of course, this is not because they doubt Arthur’s capabilities; after all, this gentleman is the author of ”Paganini Etudes: The Clock,” ”Turandot,” and the ”Wellington March.” These three works alone constitute a résumé that no music critic could dismiss lightly.

While ”The Clock” may not be considered a profound work, with its simple melody and lack of deep emotion, its design for performance technique borders on brutal. After Paganini elevated violin technique to near-mythical heights, Arthur Hastings answered the question of whether the piano could continue to create miracles with ”The Clock.”

The emergence of ”The Clock” declared to the music world that not only could the piano continue to create miracles, but it could also do so in a more exaggerated, more visual, and more dramatic way.

Thus, although ”The Clock” is not a groundbreaking work, it rightfully became the touchstone for all novice pianists.

Nowadays, if a young pianist wishes to successfully debut on the London stage, proficiently playing ”The Clock” is one of the important standards.

And as for ”Turandot”?

No words can adequately describe the success of this romantic opera across major European opera houses. Since ”Turandot” premiered in Leipzig five years ago, it quickly became a staple repertoire in major opera houses in the Germanic region.

And in the past two years, the ”Turandot” whirlwind crossed the Rhine River and swept through the major opera stages of France.

In Paris, the reaction it provoked could almost be described as ”divisive.” Despite the Paris music critics traditionally nitpicking, accusing ”Turandot” of overt emotion and lavish orchestrations, the Parisian audiences paid little heed to these opinions. On the night of the premiere, queues lined up outside the theatre managed by the Great Dumas, and applause and cheers continued long after the curtain call, forcing the actors to return multiple times to thank the audience.

Paris theater managers quickly realized that this was a work that could consistently sell out. And for Parisian singers, ”Turandot” offered a role capable of defining their careers.

And in the birthplace of European opera, the Apennine Peninsula, where opera holds an almost sacred status, a romantic opera composed by a British composer is sure to be scrutinized. However, when ”Turandot” was subsequently staged in Milan, Venice, and Naples, its immense box-office success forced even the most critical Italian music critics to admit that while the work may not be typical, it was undeniably effective.

It did not inherit all the traditions of Italian opera, yet it precisely captured the core of what makes the stage compelling—how to move audiences willingly with emotion over three hours.

As for the ”Wellington March,” its significance needs no further elaboration.

When this piece debuted at a Buckingham Palace concert, it caused an unprecedented sensation. Almost overnight, this new piece was elevated to a status comparable to those classic pieces that had long been entrenched in public life.

Less than a month after the debut of the ”Wellington March,” the 33rd Infantry Regiment, nicknamed the ”Wellington Guard,” decided to adopt this piece as their regimental marching tune.

According to Colonel Sir Charles Vail of the 33rd Regiment, this was primarily to honor the Duke of Wellington and also because of Sir Arthur Hastings’s connection with the 33rd Regiment.

Those familiar with the regiment’s history know that its founder and first Commander was Colonel George Hastings, 8th Earl of Huntingdon.

And in accordance with custom at the time, the regiment’s initial designation was the ”Huntington Regiment.”

This designation lasted until 1751, when the British Army adopted a numerical designation system, and the Huntington Regiment officially became the 33rd Infantry Regiment. In 1782, the designation was changed according to the recruiting area to the 33rd Infantry Regiment (First Infantry Regiment of West Yorkshire), thereby establishing the 33rd Regiment’s long-standing ties with the West York area.

It’s well known that Sir Arthur Hastings not only hails from the Hastings family but is also a bona fide Yorkshireman. It is therefore most fitting to use his composition as the 33rd Regiment’s marching tune.

Besides the 33rd Regiment, the ”Wellington March” has, over the past half year, made frequent appearances at various major London concerts, featuring as the finale at New Year’s concerts in several renowned theaters, such as St. James Theatre, Apsley Theatre, and Drury Lane Theatre.

According to Mr. Heinrich Heine: ”If Liszt had composed the ’Wellington March,’ his ego would have soared to the sky. But, ladies and gentlemen, the composer of this piece is the humble Arthur Hastings. He is not amid champagne glasses, nor is he at the heart of applause and flowers. He hasn’t been carried into any salon’s alcove, nor has he placed himself on any gilded chair. While you’re busy applauding this march, Arthur Hastings is quietly sitting on a rain-soaked bench somewhere in the streets of London, listening to a newly appointed young officer complain about long patrol routes, blisters from boots, and why uniforms always seem too small.”
