The Shadow of Great Britain

Chapter 1194: Chapter 133: Gottingen Has No Secret Police (6K6)_2

“Student organizations?” Heine paused for a long time, then suddenly exclaimed, “Did you really order a relaxation on the control of student associations at the University of Gottingen?”

“Of course.” Arthur poured himself a glass of water and continued, “Heinrich, Alexander, you know, I am a vanguard of liberalism. To hell with the Carlsbad Decrees, let Metternich continue to suffer from his pains, it’s my call at the University of Gottingen.”

Heine couldn’t help but feel a bit ashamed upon hearing this. It was only now that he suddenly realized he had misunderstood his friend.

Before this, he had only regarded Arthur’s friendship as an economic relationship, but now he discovered that their thoughts were remarkably close.

Thinking of this, Heine suddenly started rummaging in the inner pocket of his coat.

Seeing this, Arthur couldn’t help but ask, “What are you doing?”

“Nothing much,” Heine said while searching, “I just want to return to you the payment for the article ‘Liberalism in Germany’ I wrote earlier.”

Upon hearing this, Arthur simply waved it off, “Let it be, Heinrich, it’s only right to receive payment for writing articles. Although we’re good friends, you don’t have to be so polite with me.”

“See! See! This is what sets you apart from Franz Liszt!”

Heine exclaimed, “Liszt doesn’t have a shred of talent, yet he accepted my praising article with satisfaction, as if it was his due. But you, my dear Arthur, your every word and deed reveal the nobility of a liberal, yet you still refuse to accept free flowers and applause.”

Arthur took a sip of water, savoring it carefully before speaking, “Heinrich…”

“What’s up?”

“Do I need to pay for that last sentence?”

“No, you don’t, it hasn’t been published yet. Like you, I handle matters quite fairly.”

The long-exhausted Garibaldi, who hadn’t seen a smile in a while, was also amused by their conversation. The Italian sailor regained his usual cheerful smile, “How interesting. I didn’t know that the literary circle was actually like this. I thought you cultural folks would speak as if you were reciting lines from a play: Good morning! Beautiful world, beautiful people!”

Great Dumas closed the door and walked over to Garibaldi, saying, “If you can accept being taken for a fool, Giuseppe, feel free to speak like that.”

Holding a scorching cup of tea, Garibaldi stared at the yellowish tea, smiled, and murmured softly, “Actually, I know someone like that fool, but I’m not sure if he’s still alive now. I didn’t stay with him; I went to Genoa first, while he was supposed to advance with Mazzini’s group from Switzerland to Piedmont.”

Nourri, who had been standing with his arms crossed by the window watching the scenery, suddenly turned his head upon hearing this and asked, “You’re referring to Joseph, aren’t you?”

Garibaldi nodded slightly and sighed, “Yes, that little fool, I don’t know if he managed to escape from Italy.”

Nourri merely shook his head slightly upon hearing this, “Giuseppe, Joseph is not foolish; he’s much smarter than you think. Whether he escaped from Italy, I don’t know, but I do know that he slipped away quietly on the march to Piedmont.”

With those words from Nourri, the lively atmosphere suddenly froze again.

Garibaldi widened his eyes in disbelief, staring at Nourri, “I’m sorry, did I hear you wrong?”

Nourri retrieved a letter from his coat and tossed it onto the table, “Before we reached Gottingen, I didn’t share this news because I was afraid it would affect everyone’s morale. But now that everyone is temporarily safe, there’s nothing to hide. Giuseppe, do you know why I arrived in time to rescue you? It’s all because Mazzini sent me a letter. You weren’t doing well in Genoa, and Mazzini’s situation was even worse!”

According to the original plan, Mazzini and Ramorino’s two contingents were to first cross into Italy armed, and then you, who were lying in wait in Genoa, Naples, Marche Cape, and Abruzzi, would respond with an uprising. But in reality, even up to the date of the advance, Mazzini and Ramorino were still wrangling.

Ramorino believed the contingents were not yet fully armed and demanded to postpone the date of the advance, while Mazzini insisted on sticking to the original plan. Ramorino accused Mazzini of being too reckless, and Mazzini claimed Ramorino must have been bribed by the French Government, thus repeatedly delaying the date and trying to bankrupt the uprising.

Enraged by Mazzini, Ramorino bluntly stated that if Mazzini wasn’t satisfied with him, he could immediately replace him as commander. Mazzini also considered dismissing him, but our rebel allies in Savoy declared that they would not cooperate unless Ramorino was present. Furthermore, Bonarroti and others who had doubted the plan from the start suddenly jumped out to attack Mazzini, and they tried every means within the organization to discredit him.

However, in the end, Mazzini and Ramorino managed to reach a reluctant compromise. Ramorino would advance according to the original plan, and Mazzini would desist from meddling in Ramorino’s military arrangements. But unexpectedly, just as the two had reconciled, the Swiss Government sent people to disperse our volunteers.
