The Shadow of Great Britain

Chapter 1152: Chapter 118: Germany Has Only 1 University, Just Like Britain_2

I know someone sees this and is certainly snickering to themselves.

But don’t blame me for not warning you, mocking the University of London at the University of Gottingen is a more serious crime than inciting a riot.

Even though this crime isn’t written into the campus management guidelines, it still belongs to those unspoken rules.

If you don’t heed the warning, don’t blame the Gestapo for finding your doorstep the next day.

Of course, Ohm, who had just arrived at Gottingen, didn’t yet know about the dirtiest, most sordid parts of the University of Gottingen.

He carried with him a humble mindset of reverence and study upon arriving at this academic Holy Land.

Everything here felt close to him, not only did he see relaxed smiles on the University of Gottingen campus, but everywhere in the nooks and crannies of the campus, he could see students busily setting up displays, promoting their campaign for student union president’s ideologies.

On a simply erected outdoor stage, the two presidential candidates were arguing intensely over their different campaign platforms.

As for the students watching below the stage, some were shouting slogans of freedom and democracy, while others were adamantly defending nationality and tradition.

“Bismarck, you’re a bastard!”

“I agree!”

“Why would the Hastings School Director agree to let this guy run for club president? He can’t even graduate properly, this is sheer nonsense!”

“Can someone with mediocre academic performance really lead the student council?”

“Hmph! Why can’t Bismarck run? In my view, you guys are just hypocritical, talking about fighting for freedom, but in the end, you exclude Bismarck. Ultimately, you guys are no different from Metternich.”

“How can you say that? I am not against Bismarck running, I just think he doesn’t have the ability to do the job.”

“Oh, so if you’re saying that good academic performance means you can be president? If so, then you shouldn’t have opposed Metternich. Back when he was studying at Gottingen, he was top of the class.”

“I…”

“What? Did I hit a sore spot? Or are you planning, like Heine said, to run off to Vienna tonight to lick Metternich’s hemorrhoids?”

“Enough already, you guys are just being unreasonable!”

“You’re the one being unreasonable! If you want to support Metternich, go ahead, I’m not going to join you in that!”

“That’s right, those against Bismarck’s election are Metternich’s lackeys! Good academic performance doesn’t mean good character, nor does it mean one is qualified to lead the University of Gottingen’s student society.”

Ohm saw the students arguing and couldn’t help but show a surprised expression.

Although he hadn’t been teaching for the past few years, he had heard of the “Carlsbad Decrees” amendment passed by the Confederal Parliament. Logically, all German student societies should have been banned, but the heated election activities at the University of Gottingen overturned his understanding.

If this were happening in Berlin, or Munich, student society activities of such scale would have already attracted the police.

However, not only did Gottingen’s police not take action against these students, the two officers patrolling at the campus entrance were listening intently, seemingly with no intent to return to the police station to file a report.

Seeing this, Ohm couldn’t help but also display a relaxed smile similar to the students: “Gottingen really lives up to being the best university in all of Germany, the atmosphere of freedom here is simply unlike any Deutsch University.”

Ohm believed everything happening in front of him to be true, not because he was a foolish man, but because he had not studied Scotland Yard’s “Advanced Policing Course.”

Drafted by Sir Arthur Hastings, the course explicitly states: the most high-end police often appear as opponents.

And at the University of Gottingen, the most high-end police are the students.

The two candidates on stage, Bismarck, already predetermined as a Gestapo leader, goes without saying, but even the one standing opposing him has also been recruited and won over.

The new Academic Director of the University of Gottingen, Sir Arthur Hastings, is adept at betting on both sides. Although he doesn’t doubt Bismarck’s ability, this doesn’t mean he would put all his chips on Bismarck.

While supporting Bismarck, Arthur also anticipated another possibility in advance.

He doesn’t care what the campaign process looks like, as long as the final result is highly consistent.

And the fiercely contested presidential position between Bismarck and his opponent, it doesn’t really matter who gets it, because in the end, they’ll all be working for the Duke.

It’s just that the one who loses between the two will owe Arthur more, as Arthur plans to appoint the loser as the vice president of the Gestapo, and provide him with a school recommendation letter as usual.

Therefore, if the main president doesn’t obey, Arthur can always promote the vice, and judged by human nature, the vice will mostly be more loyal and work harder than the main president.

But no matter what, these matters are carried out behind the scenes.

From the perspective of an outsider like Ohm, Gottingen seemed prosperous, everywhere there was a vibrant atmosphere of freedom.

And this scene made Ohm’s anxious heart relax a little.

“Sir Arthur Hastings really is an outstanding figure with both virtue and talent.”

He muttered to himself, strolling down the path in the square.
