The Shadow of Great Britain

Chapter 979: 49 Chapters The Riddle of Tarot_2

Arthur turned his head and winked at Miss Dresset, smiling and shaking his head slightly, “Don’t you think being the moon is happier than being the sun?”

Miss Dresset furrowed her brows slightly, “Why would the moon be happier than the sun?”

Arthur put on his white gloves again, fastened his manners, and bowed slightly, “Because there are always stars accompanying the moon. If one becomes the sun, the sky seems lonely during the day. However, everyone desires to be the sun, but this is not their fault. As Voltaire said: To comfort our suffering in this world, Nature made us petty and frivolous.”

Miss Dresset’s heart was pounding, and although she hadn’t drunk tonight, she felt her cheeks flush and her body warm.

Such elegant words, almost like those of a philosopher, or perhaps he is a philosopher.

Even if they were casual words, they sounded like love whispers.

Like high heels stepping on marshmallow clouds, the sharp heel punctured everything, yet warmth enveloped all sensations.

Miss Dresset gazed at Arthur, feeling dizzy.

She suddenly thought of her two sisters’ husbands.

One was a banker obsessed with calculations and ledgers, the other a factory owner lacking life’s pleasures, with the smell of oil all over.

As for those so-called outstanding young men she saw at balls, compared to the one before her, they paled in comparison.

Innate nobility needs no special display; perhaps a casual movement can reveal the true nature of a person. This young man is undoubtedly a genuine nobleman, even if he isn’t now, he will be in the future.

What was Miss Dresset thinking at this moment?

No one knows a woman’s thoughts.

So, what does the Devil think of this matter?

The Red Devil lying on the carriage’s roof, shaking his legs and chugging wine, also nodded smugly.

“Yes, that’s right, Arthur. First lesson on a diplomat’s basic skills: unleash your innate charm freely upon ladies and misses. You’ve read so many books, and I’ve made significant efforts to send you to university for further studies; if you don’t use what you’ve learned for wooing, what else are you planning to do? Do you intend to help Royalists assassinate Louis Philippe? Even Eld understands this better than you. Energetic young people usually only have two choices: to create life or to take life, and comparatively, the former is clearly safer and easier for you.”

Miss Dresset stared at Arthur, only to notice the wet bloodstains on the shoulder of his tuxedo under the warm moonlight.

“Ah… you… are injured?”

Perhaps emotions stirred by the night boldened her, and she raised her hand to take a handkerchief to wipe it, not merely out of concern, but for some reason, she wanted to let it absorb some of Arthur’s aroma, such as a bit of blood.

Regardless of the century, London or Paris, these young girls always have some superstitions, and the gypsies despised throughout Europe often receive respect from them, their magical crystal balls frequently convincing girls they can bring good luck.

Arthur also didn’t expect the difference between Parisian and London ladies to be so vast.

Although he had heard about the passion of Parisian girls from Victor, Dumas, and others, having long lived in conservative Britain, he remained skeptical of such claims.

But today, he finally saw it firsthand.

Perhaps to cover her faux pas or to avoid letting Arthur think she’s a frivolous girl.

A gentle blush appeared on her pale cheeks, her face gradually becoming rosy, Miss Dresset took out a neatly stacked deck of playing cards from a small box on the carriage rack behind her.

Famous detectives of Scotland Yard could see through the hidden secrets in a criminal’s heart, surely could also see through a clumsy, awkward girl who hasn’t even fallen in love.

Perhaps Miss Dresset focused all her thoughts on choosing a promising match, she knew nothing about how to attract the other party, only proceeding according to the scenario she imagined.

She received a good family education, painting, piano, and eloquence were all at a nice level, and she had also read many books, even including the “Hastings Case Files.” But unfortunately, due to her consistently arrogant behavior and cutting words, her girlfriends dared not show off their mediocre partners in front of her.

Thus, Miss Dresset’s understanding of love almost entirely stemmed from those chivalric romance novels published by unknown publishers. Obviously, to increase circulation, these authors were unlikely to write genuine but chaotic love stories.

But considering the fact that Miss Dresset invited him for a ride, Arthur wasn’t planning to shred her unrealistic fantasies for the moment, he saw no need to anger a lady and understood their desire for perfect love.

However, Arthur wouldn’t fulfill this dream for them, as such sins weren’t his doing, so he shouldn’t bear the responsibility for the ladies.

Arthur Sigma in “British” had never written any Mary Sue style love novels, if he had made any literary mistakes, it would only be over-artistic expression in “St. George’s flag still rises,” where dolphins turned into sharks, altering the hierarchical relationship between Eld and dolphins.

If one must nitpick, well, Arthur admits, he committed an unforgivable sin against Britain’s religious realm by portraying Eld Carter as a sailor saint.

But concerning this offense, Arthur successfully performed a miracle of resurrection once, making Britain’s religious community reluctant to associate with him.

So, everyone should consider this settled.

Arthur watched as Miss Dresset meticulously laid the deck of cards flat on the small foldable table inside the carriage, reminding him of the time in university playing cards and gambling with Eld.

“How big are you planning to play?”

“How big?” Miss Dresset was taken aback, then smiled back, “I’m not planning to play poker with you. Didn’t you just mention stars, the moon, and the sun? So I thought you might understand Tarot cards.”

“Tarot cards?”

Arthur knew these little items seemed popular among ladies, previously Eld had studied them specifically for wooing women, and that guy nearly got arrested for getting too close with the gypsies; Arthur had a hard time getting him out.

However, evidently, France didn’t have such regulations, after the Great Revolution, France eliminated all forms of racial discrimination, at least officially, allowing these misses to openly show their interest in gypsy fortune-telling.

Seeing Arthur doesn’t understand Tarot cards, Miss Dresset seemed concerned he’d associate her interests with the gypsies, and spoke up in defense of her hobby, “Don’t underestimate this art, it’s Nature’s mystery library, likely the oldest form of divination in the world. Although people say not to be superstitious, using it to pass time and entertain should always be fine. Look here, there are 78 cards in total, you just need to draw three, it’s the perfect time for divination now.”
