The Shadow of Great Britain

Chapter 930: Chapter 30: Hidden Voyeur_3

Arthur asked, ”Why would he approach Mr. Samson? Could it be that even executioners are part of the upper class?”

Victor pushed open the room door, pulled out a pipe, and lit it: ”No, people like Samson are certainly not part of the upper class, but he is Benjamin’s bridge to the elite society. He knows what kind of stories those gentlemen and ladies love, so Benjamin has always liked to collect tales of criminals and some legendary ruffians. He invited Samson over just to add some necessary spice to the party. What could be more fascinating than an executioner who beheaded the King and Queen?”

”That’s debatable.” Arthur borrowed a lite from Victor: ”I think a crime syndicate spying on Paris’s popular playwright Vini also has its own captivating magic power.”

”Indeed!” Victor chuckled and said, ”If the crime syndicate consisted of one person, and his name was Victor Hugo, then this play would be quite a blockbuster.”

Arthur, upon hearing this, inhaled smoke and coughed before saying, ”Victor Hugo? I remember he is known as the upright gentleman of the entire Parisian literary circle. Moreover, isn’t Vini his friend? Why would Mr. Hugo do such a thing?”

”I don’t know either. But...look at this?”

Victor raised his thumb, pointing at the small hole drilled in the room beforehand.

Arthur bent down and peered through the small hole into the adjacent room.

The decor in the next room was obviously much more luxurious than their small suite, with a wide double bed, landscape paintings on the walls, and enamel tea sets on the mahogany table. All this indicated it was an exclusive resting room for VIPs.

However, the focus of the issue was not on these furnishings, but on the tall man kneeling on one knee on the bed, bending forward to peer at the wall.

Victor leaned back in the armchair, smoking: ”Never thought we’d actually not be the first ones here to think about drilling a hole in the wall. I guess there’s likely a small hole on the wall of that room too, which is exactly the source of Vini and Mrs. Dovar’s feeling of being watched. As for the man lying at the head of the bed peering, saying his name might surprise you.”

”Who is he?”

”Victor Hugo, the moral model of the entire Parisian literary scene, a celebrated good husband, and a well-praised good father. Who would have thought that he secretly engaged in such activity?”

Although Arthur was mentally prepared long ago, when he heard the name Hugo, he couldn’t help but be stunned for a moment: ”Are you sure?”

Victor curled his lips: ”I didn’t believe it at first either. So while you were chatting, I went downstairs to the counter to confirm that the room next door is a long-term rental, and the gentleman who rented this room is indeed Mr. Victor Hugo.”

Arthur straightened up and exchanged a glance with Victor: ”If I recall correctly, guests who come to this hotel usually have an unusual purpose, right?”

Victor agreed with Arthur’s view: ”I also think this is the place where Hugo meets his lover, Miss Druex. However, why he would eavesdrop on Vini and Mrs. Dovar is another issue. For now, I suspect he might be jealous of their relationship, or perhaps he wants to snatch love away forcibly?”

Arthur frowned, pondering for a while: ”Perhaps we should ask Alexander, after all, he and Mrs. Dovar also had a relationship beyond friendship once. Maybe that fat man can uncover some clues about Mr. Hugo’s admiration for Mrs. Dovar from her daily interactions.”

As the two detectives from across the channel were busy deducing, unexpected light footsteps and cheerful chatter sounded from outside the door.

”Miss George, can we really use that room for free?”

”Of course, dear, it’s Mr. Hugo’s long-term rental room. He’s very generous, he told me that apart from needing quiet for writing in the mornings on weekdays, his friends can use it freely at other times.”

”But...if we make a mess there later, and Mr. Hugo sees it, wouldn’t that be...?”

”Heh...dear, if you’re so worried, why can’t you be a little gentler with me later?”

Victor and Arthur heard this conversation, and a detective’s intuition almost simultaneously surged in both their minds.

They quickly bent down to look through the small hole.

As expected, not only did the passerby’s dialogue outside the room reach them, but Hugo also heard it.

The tall leader of the French romance movement neither intended to go out and greet his friends nor actively dispel the wild pair of ready-to-raise chaos.

Under Victor and Arthur’s watchful eyes, Hugo leisurely rose from the window, pushed open the full-length wardrobe beside him, and revealed the hidden door behind the wardrobe.

Even with Victor’s decades of experience in law enforcement, he couldn’t help but exclaim, ”My God! There’s a hidden door, has he been planning this as a usual offender? Could he be planning to hide in that hidden door and then quietly watch...damn it, I’ve finally figured out Hugo’s peeping on Vini, he simply has this fetish!”

Arthur raised a hand to wipe the sweat and breathed a sigh of relief: ”These guys always manage to get us something new!”
