The Shadow of Great Britain

Arthur, sometimes I really feel fortunate to be a Briton.

Had I been born in a country like Argentina, I truly don’t know how I would cope.

Rosas may fool the Argentinians, but he can’t fool me, nor should he fool the good people of Britain.

I know he is preparing to issue a new Argentine public debt through the London Stock Exchange, but should we allow him to get his way?

Of course not, that’s the fundamental reason I’m writing this letter.

We have no reason to provide him with bullets to shoot at Indians, nor do we have an obligation to help his dictatorial rule.

His acting is just too poor, it’s truly not worth buying a ticket to watch.

Whether it’s a military government or a dictator, these are not indicators of a progressive civilization.

Arthur, for the love of God, please do everything you can to stop him.

Just like when we chased Fred’s slave ship on the high seas, Rosas will never understand that the righteous officers of Scotland Yard can never be bought with dirty silver coins and honors stained with the blood of others.

Naturalist fighting for truth, your friend, Charles Darwin.

February 11, 1832.

In the smoky office of Scotland Yard, the air was thick with the scent of rich West Indian tobacco.

Arthur, pipe in mouth, leaned back in his chair, his eyes glued to Darwin’s letter, unable to look away.

The Red Devil stood behind him, delicate, sharp black fingernails gently pressing on Arthur’s shoulder, the tone of his voice seemingly laced with a hint of mockery.

“Arthur, I told you not to read it.

You’re well aware of what could soon happen in London, and if you choose the right side, your future will be set for the next thirty years.

But…

but at this critical moment, you choose to look at this trivial bauble that might unsettle your mind.”

Seeing that Arthur was silent, the Red Devil sighed again, a hand to his forehead, lamenting, “Don’t say I didn’t warn you, you’d better think very carefully before you act.

This time it’s not about dealing with bottom-feeders like Fred from the East End, do you realize what you’d face if you took a wrong step?

You’d be confronting the wrath of bigwigs from the Tory Party like the Duke of Wellington, Sir Peel, the Duke of Newcastle and the Earl of Eldon!

Directly facing the roars of heavyweights from the Whig Party like the Earl Grey, the Duke of Bedford, Viscount Palmeston and Viscount Melbourne!

It’s utter destruction!!

It’s beyond redemption!!!”

Hearing this, Arthur just turned his head to look at the Red Devil.

Before him, the Red Devil had once again donned his classic clown attire, a clown suit, clown’s hat, and the colorful, puffy wig.

Agares stuck out his sinister red tongue, sweeping across his lips like a broom.

He took off his red nose and placed it on Arthur’s face: “April Fool’s Day is here again, are you the clown this time?”

Thud thud thud!

The office door was suddenly knocked.

“Inspector Hastings!

Urgent report from Section Five!”

Arthur turned his head and cracked his neck side to side; he pushed the red nose more firmly onto his own nose, securing it tightly in place.

Agares’ smile stalled for a moment, then his lips rose higher and higher, to the point where it seemed they might tear his cheeks: “Arthur…

you!

Son!!

Of!!!

A!!!!”

Arthur clapped his hands lightly and called out: “Come in!”
