The Shadow of Great Britain

This is all within the duties of a responsible politician and a faithful believer.”

Ledley pressed further, “Then, may I take the liberty of asking how much you have donated to this lady so far?”

The beauty, upon hearing this, simply leaned her head gently on Harrison’s shoulder.

“Mr.

Harrison is quite generous.

Although we’ve only met a few times, but as of now, I’ve already received almost five pounds,” she said.

Harrison quickly interjected, “Oh, my dear Defina, you should know that it takes time to raise a large sum of money.

As for those five pounds, it was a token of my gratitude for your Polish lessons.

Have you forgotten?

We agreed to do business in Poland in the future.”

As Harrison spoke, a group of young journalists who had been scribbling and drawing suddenly smiled and turned their notebooks towards Harrison; it was a cartoon illustration he had drawn for this news story.

The drawing was very simplistic, with straightforward bold lines, but with just a few strokes, it had already outlined the large bed in the room and the embarrassed Harrison lying on the bed, with the Polish madam nestled in his arms.

The young journalist asked with a smile, “So Mr.

Harrison, what do you think would be a good title for this cartoon?

‘Harrison Perfume Company’s hefty investment in Poland: total investment reaching five pounds,’ or perhaps ‘Harrison’s one-on-one Polish tutoring’?”

“Stop…

don’t…” Harrison’s lips trembled as he slowly lifted his finger towards the young journalist, “Doing this, you’ll ruin me!”

Barnes took a drag of his cigarette, then stood up and extended his hand to Harrison, “Well, it was a pleasure to hear about your business experience today.

I’ll also be verifying with the Earl of Eldon, those staunch supporters of Harrison Perfume, later on.

If what you’ve been boasting about is true, I’ll consider setting up a special column for you in the ‘Thames Times’ financial section.

By the way, would you be interested in going halves with me on a sausage processing plant?”

Upon hearing this, Harrison merely clutched his chest and looked up at the sky, feeling dizzy and even breathing seemed to be an unbearable burden.

At that moment, just as he was about to faint, the corner of his eye suddenly caught a faint red glimmer outside the window, nearly imperceptible.

Harrison turned his head to look; sitting in the restaurant across the street on the second floor was a Scotland Yard policeman, methodically slicing a piece of steak with his fork and bringing it to his mouth.

Unlike Officer Ledley, this policeman’s shoulder strap was not empty, but appropriately adorned with a shiny St.

Edward’s Crown Badge.

Arthur also seemed to have noticed Harrison’s gaze.

He picked up the white napkin hanging around his neck and gently wiped the sauce from the corner of his mouth, his lips gleaming like reflective cherries after the rain.

Arthur gently turned his head and raised his glass towards Harrison, toasting from afar, “Don’t be too upset, Mr.

Harrison.

Our Polish language service is much more gentle than Mr.

Victor’s French language service.”

Harrison’s pupils shrank with shock.

He wanted to point at Arthur, but at that moment, he didn’t even have the strength to lift his hand.

Only the beauty in his arms could faintly hear his whisper.

“He…

the bastard, Ar…

Arthur Hastings, you damn dare to backstab me!”

The beauty, upon hearing this, simply tilted her head and mournfully said, “Ah…

Mr.

Harrison, with me here, you shouldn’t be thinking about men.”
