The Shadow of Great Britain

Ha ha ha, I sold the ivory in Bahia, and I knew I was a genius!

Arthur, when I complete the voyage and return to London, maybe Scotland Yard should consider making me the head of procurement.

…

Fuck!

Arthur, I got swindled by two hookers in Rio de Janeiro!

They didn’t leave me a dime of the ivory money!

Damn, I thought the honey trap was exclusive to London, why the hell does Brazil have this industry too?

Those little bastards better not let me catch them, or I’ll make sure they regret it.

Ah, Arthur, if only you were in Brazil, with your skills you could definitely help me get the money back.

…

Arthur, I’m fucked!

Today in the Amazon Jungle I saw a python twenty feet long, I used to think Greek mythology was all lies, but now it seems that Medusa’s offspring might actually be alive in the rainforest of the Amazon.

Do you think if I brought one of these things back to London, someone would pay a high price for it?

…

Arthur, I think I must give you a piece of advice, the offspring of Medusa seem to generally have a terrible temper.

Maybe I should have brought Alexander along when I set off.

My small frame would probably be swallowed in one bite, but Alexander’s size might put up a bit of a struggle.

Do you think there’s a chance Alexander would agree to be tied up in a tree as bait, and after we capture Medusa, we split the earnings 60/40?

What do you think?

…

Ha ha ha, those idiots actually said there are Cannibals in the Amazon Jungle, what an era we live in, and still, such lies are believed.

…

Arthur’s gaze swept over Eld’s letter, this Classical Studies graduate from the University of London clearly wasn’t as logical as Darwin, writing entirely according to his own interests, wherever his thoughts took him.

Although not inheriting the rigor of the classics, he retained the whimsical nature of the Romantics.

What worried Arthur most, however, was the point at which Eld had stopped writing his letter.

Following his usual logic and causal sequence in his writing, after Eld had mocked the Cannibals, something would certainly have happened next.

The only question now was whether the Cannibals preferred barbecue or sashimi, and whether this high-achieving graduate of the University of London would end up in Heaven or Hell.

Arthur shook his head, trying to clear his thoughts.

While he didn’t mind saying a prayer or two for Eld, if something had indeed happened, Eld was probably already digested by now.

He tucked the letter into his chest, put away his umbrella, and walked towards the house at the end of the street in the early morning mist.

The plainclothes detectives on standby saw him approaching and pressed their hands on the flintlock pistols inside their coats.

Just then came a few knocks on the door.

The front door of the house at the end of the street was pulled open, revealing a middle-aged man in slippers and pajamas with slightly puffy eyes.

Arthur sized up the man’s build and asked, “Mr.

Bernie Harrison?”

The man was startled at first, then slowly nodded his head.

Arthur took out a light yellow paper from his chest and displayed it in front of the man.

“Arthur Hastings, head of the Criminal Investigation Department at the Greater London Police Department.

Based on a search and arrest warrant issued by the local Magistrates’ Court in London, you are suspected of committing a serious offense of murder and attempting to bribe a coroner to alter post-mortem results.

To ensure the safety of the property and persons of the citizens of Greater London, and to promote justice, I declare you are now officially under arrest.

You have the right to remain silent until the results of the secondary toxicology tests on the body organized by the Royal Society are released, but every word you say will be used as evidence in court.”
