The Shadow of Great Britain

He waved his hand impatiently and said, “Forget it, let’s just finish this job first.

We’ll consider what comes next later.”

Agares, who had been lying on the windowsill watching the play, heard this and only covered his mouth to snicker, “Oh, our Miss Fiona really is a capable woman.

If Arthur, that little rascal, knew that not only had Fiona secretly acted on her own but also withheld information, then it probably wouldn’t be Eld tied up in bed today.”

Eld, listening to the Frenchmen’s conversation, didn’t know if it was because his feet were off the ground, but after the passion receded, his intelligence seemed to take the higher ground again.

“Wait, you’re going to make a move on Alexander?

Are you the new French killers sent here?”

Upon hearing this, Victor merely smiled amiably and said, “Sir, let’s not put it so harshly.

We are simply entrusted by others to request Mr.

Dumas’s return to Paris.”

Eld spoke brashly, “Return to Paris?

Well, you are indeed doing him a favor.

I thought you were going to take him back to the plantation.

But you’re out of luck today; Alexander isn’t at the theater.”

“Is that so?” Victor glanced at the two chairs by the window, then slowly bent down to look under the bed, “That’s not necessarily the case.”

His eyes met Great Dumas’s face.

For a moment, the air fell into a dead silence, and after exchanging looks, Great Dumas just turned around expressionlessly, a hand propped against his head, showing only his broad back to Victor.

But such an attempt to hide was clearly in vain.

Before long, he and Tom, along with Eld, were bound tightly and thrown onto the ground.

“Eld, look at the mess you’ve made!

Chasing a guy instead of a girl is bad enough, but to drag me into this as well!”

“And what about you?

Who was it that attracted these flies today?

Oh, God!

Look at the mess I’ve made!

I actually groped a French man’s bottom and it’s even a man’s!

Tom, if you’re going to, just shoot me now, I’ve been humiliated enough today.

If I were to die at the hands of a French man, my life would be utterly disgraceful.

Please don’t let me tarnish the honor of the Royal Navy.”

“Mr.

Carter, haven’t you noticed that I’m also tied up here?”

“Yes!

Why are you tied up here too?

Where’s your gun?”

“Mr.

Victor just bet that my gun had no bullets.”

“And?”

“He was right.”

“Then why didn’t you bring any bullets, Scotland Yard’s issued guns are used as fire sticks or what?”

Tom felt somewhat wronged: “Mr.

Carter, you don’t understand.

Scotland Yard isn’t like the Royal Navy; our firearms regulations are extremely strict.

Arthur has now been moved from his post with real power, and ammunition is independently kept by each police district.

If he wanted to get some bullets, he had to go through a document from Chief Rowan, but as you know, there has been some displeasure between them lately, so the document approval might not go so smoothly.”

Victor sat on a chair with his legs crossed, holding a pipe, and while Vakul went to call for the carriage, he still managed to spare a moment to chat with them.

“Oh, so Mr.

Hastings’s life hasn’t been very pleasant lately, that explains it.

Generally speaking, he has no reason to bother with a French man without a protective order.

It seems like he, just like me, wants to use this as an opportunity for a comeback?”

Upon hearing this, Eld angrily said, “You French know nothing, Arthur is a man who’d stab both his sides for his friends, and we graduates of the University of London have connections at the top!”

“Connections at the top?

And yet here you are needing to play tunes on the side?”

Victor pinched his freshly shaved chin and looked down from the window at the stage.

Amid thunderous applause, Mendelssohn lifted his white-gloved hand with a smile to acknowledge the audience.

Behind the shadow of the curtain, dressed in a pitch-black evening suit and standing tall as a sword, Arthur slicked back his tousled hair.

The glossy black hair and stark white gloves contrasted sharply, with his eyes occasionally gleaming a soft red.

He was about to go on stage.

Victor watched as Arthur stepped onto the center of the stage, lightly flicked the tail of his tailcoat, and sat on the piano bench.

At this moment, the legend among France’s criminals and police gave a command: “Mr.

Hastings, my apologies.

Now, everyone prepare to pull out.”

Meanwhile, nearly at the same moment in another box not far from Victor’s, Lady Livin nestled in the arms of Austria’s Prime Minister Metternich, his fully gray-haired head easily making her laugh heartily.

Yet, in between bonding moments, they still managed to probe each other intermittently.

Metternich casually brought up, “Dorothea, when you go back to St.

Petersburg to visit relatives next time, do remember to send my regards to the Tsar.

I heard that unlike his brother, the current Tsar pays great attention to these details.

If you don’t stay in touch frequently, relations will fade quickly.”

Lady Livin playfully blinked, “Send regards?

Of course, I could do that.

However, I’m not planning to go back yet because I’ve heard that the Tsar is very upset about Belgium’s independence and even said he would teach them a harsh lesson.

Dear, as you know, when the Tsar is angry, it’s a grave matter in the Russian court.

At such times, it’s best not to provoke him.”
