Empire Rising: Spain

Hearing their captain say this, the two assassins forced to cover the retreat nodded with pale faces, but did not argue.

If they volunteered to stay behind, their families might receive compensation. But if they refused and affected others’ retreat, their families not only wouldn’t get compensation, but might also face Queen Isabella’s accountability.

Queen Isabel herself is an autocratic dictator, with a particularly brutal rule. If they were disliked by the Queen, their families’ future would be bleak.

With their sacrifice, the other assassins indeed managed to escape.

But their ending was also tragic, being shot to death by angry guards, with bullet holes exceeding double digits on each, and blood flowing like a river.

After confirming safety, the guards anxiously searched for Prime Minister Prim.

The good news is that Prime Minister Prim is not dead. With the dual protection of the carriage and the guards inside, he is just severely injured and in a coma, with no immediate danger to life.

The bad news is that Prime Minister Prim’s injuries are severe, and he shows no signs of waking. This means that in the short term, the Spanish government will be leaderless. Without Prime Minister Prim to suppress and mediate, the workers’ rebellion will become more intense.

The assassins escaped, spreading the news of the successful assassination of Prime Minister Prim.

This news immediately caused jubilation among the rebel nobles and the Queen’s Guard Officer. Amidst their joy, they decided to proceed with the next step of their plan, which was full-scale rebellion. They wanted to take advantage of the Spanish government’s leaderless period to control the government, and then suppress this worker’s march under the name of the Spanish government, restoring stability to Spain.

It is worth mentioning that simultaneously with the assassination of Prime Minister Prim, there was also an attempt on the life of Minister of Defense Duke Serrano.

However, before coming to the South Morocco Colony, Carlo had personally instructed Duke Serrano to temporarily relocate the Ministry of Defense’s office to within the barracks and not to step out of the barracks, always awaiting Carlo’s next order.

Though surprised by Carlo’s order, Duke Serrano nodded immediately after Carlo explained the seriousness of the situation.

It was not that Carlo was overly cautious; rather, history has provided enough lessons. A comprehensive response must be prepared. At the very least, having the military under his control would reassure Carlo.

If the rebel nobles were to acquire some military power, it wouldn’t just be a small rebellion but yet another civil war in Spain.

Originally, Spain had painstakingly ended its domestic chaos through reform, ushering in a golden era of development.

Should these rebellious nobles and Bourbon remnants drag Spain back into the quagmire of civil war, it would be a disaster.

Even if the civil war were won in the future, it would severely damage Spain’s infrastructure and industrial economic development. In the lightest cases, it would set Spain’s development back by years; in the worst cases, it would completely dash the hope of becoming one of the superpowers.

Although the previous assassination attempt on Prime Minister Prim had failed, historically, Prime Minister Prim’s fate was to die by assassination.

To be safe, it was crucial to ensure that either Prime Minister Prim or Duke Serrano, the two main pillars, remained safe.

Duke Serrano’s safety was the easiest to guarantee. As long as he stayed in the barracks, no one could threaten him.

Prime Minister Prim, however, was different. Under the influence of rebel nobles and the Bourbon family, Spain was bound to fall into temporary chaos.

As the Prime Minister of the Spanish government, Prime Minister Prim would be extremely busy during this time and would have to make public appearances.

This would make it easier for enemies to assassinate Prime Minister Prim, and was why Carlo chose to ensure Duke Serrano’s safety, making him the final pillar of support.

So far, the strategy was effective. Especially when Duke Serrano learned that Prime Minister Prim had been severely injured and fallen into a coma, he was even more thankful that he had heeded Carlo’s command and not left the barracks.

In the countryside manor, the rebellious nobles and the Queen’s envoy also received the news of the failed attempt to assassinate Duke Serrano.

In fact, it wasn’t so much a failure, but rather the assassination never took place. Duke Serrano stayed in the barracks all the time, making infiltration impossible for the assassins.

There’s no way they could storm the barracks and attempt an assassination, for the soldiers there were armed with real guns and a large number of cannons.

Unless their numbers could overwhelm them, storming the barracks would be suicidal. Let alone assassination, they might be suppressed before even seeing Duke Serrano.

“Everyone, will the fact that Duke Serrano is still alive affect our plan?” Duke Osuna asked with a somewhat grim face, surprised by the unexpected turn in the Serrano assassination.

“I don’t think it has a significant impact,” the Queen’s envoy stepped forward to express his opinion: ”

Prim is dead, and the Spanish government is already leaderless. We just need to control the situation within the Spanish government to control the whole of Spain.

When we issue orders in the name of the Spanish government, will Serrano dare to refuse? Haha, once we control the Spanish government, we will have more troops.

Then, whether it’s Serrano or Carlo, their destinies will be in our hands. Ladies and gentlemen, the most important thing now is to quickly control the government situation and prevent parliamentary interference.

If a proxy Prime Minister is elected by the parliament, it will be hard for us to control the Spanish government.

Gentlemen, it’s time for your performance. As long as you can control the Spanish government, Her Majesty the Queen and His Majesty the King can return to Spain,” the Queen’s envoy said with a smile.
