Chapter 1288: Chapter 1288: Crisis in the Dilapidated Temple

”Heh heh, Heavy Water Protector of the Water Temple, who would’ve thought you’d come to this? Hand over the Imperial Jade Seal, and this old woman might spare your life!”

Corpse Granny was as cautious and cunning as ever. Although she had entered the dilapidated temple, she didn’t approach Heavy Water Protector, instead positioning herself at a spot most convenient for escape as she questioned him.

”The Imperial Jade Seal is not here. What I do have is a life to spare. If you dare act against me today, you will be declaring yourself an enemy of the Water Temple. Even Blue Wave Island won’t be able to protect you!”

Heavy Water Protector said coldly.

”Idiot. Once I acquire the Imperial Jade Seal, this old woman will naturally flee far away. As long as you’re all dead, who will know the artifact is with me?”

Corpse Granny sneered.

She then turned to the Blue Wave Island disciples beside her and commanded, ”Go retrieve the storage rings from those two.”

The Blue Wave Island disciples were not fools; they were unwilling to march to their deaths.

But the problem was, Corpse Granny was ruthless.

Black mist emanated from her body, instantly infiltrating the disciples. They stumbled as though their very souls had been stripped away, shambling forward like mindless zombies toward Heavy Water Protector and Tianhai Zhen Zhu.

”Damn it, this sly old hag!”

Heavy Water Protector had initially been feigning severe injury, intending to ambush Corpse Granny. Upon witnessing the current situation, there was no point in maintaining the act.

His face hardened as several water streams, rope-like in appearance, suddenly shot forth from his body. In an instant, the throats of over a dozen Blue Wave Island disciples were pierced by these seemingly feeble streams, leaving them dead on the spot.

”You old demon! So your injuries aren’t grave after all?”

Corpse Granny frowned, considering retreat, but hesitation held her back.

Though the Blue Wave Island disciples were slain, they were only Heavenly Realm Martial Artists, whereas she was a top-tier fighter in the Cave Heaven Realm.

She might not need to fear Heavy Water Protector.

During her brief moment of hesitation, the bodies of the Blue Wave Island disciples dissolved into liquid and were absorbed into Heavy Water Protector.

”Hahaha, such a feast indeed!”

Heavy Water Protector burst into laughter. The Heavenly Origin Power of the Blue Wave Island disciples was predominantly water-attribute, yin in nature. Absorbing it felt immensely satisfying.

Corpse Granny finally sensed danger and attempted to flee, but she was struck against the temple wall by a palm strike from Heavy Water Protector, sustaining severe injuries on the spot.

”You old crone, didn’t you want the Imperial Jade Seal? Why leave in such a hurry?”

Heavy Water Protector straightened himself and began walking toward Corpse Granny.

Just at that moment, a furious voice bellowed from outside, ”Heavy Water Protector, hand over the Imperial Jade Seal, and I’ll spare your life!”

”Damned Sun Ran, the indomitable spirit truly lives up to its name!”

Heavy Water Protector’s expression changed upon hearing the voice. He grabbed Tianhai Zhen Zhu and bolted toward the outskirts of the crumbling temple.

There weren’t many people in Crime City who could intimidate him, but Medicine King Sun Ran was definitely one of them. That man was notoriously difficult to deal with.

”Hoo~~”

Hearing Sun Ran chasing after Heavy Water Protector, Corpse Granny exhaled deeply and quickly sat cross-legged to start tending to her injuries.

Meanwhile, footsteps sounded just outside the decrepit temple again.

Two figures entered—a man and a woman.

”Deputy Island Master!”

The two burst into gasps of surprise upon seeing Corpse Granny.

Corpse Granny, recognizing the pair, showed a rare hint of joy and said, ”Ah, so it’s you.”

The newcomers were Blue Wave Island disciples, one of whom happened to be the legendary Rose Sword, Stewart Scarlett.

The other person was less renowned but still ranked among the top five talents of Blue Wave Island.

”I was attacked by a scoundrel and am severely injured. Come here and help me heal.”

Corpse Granny addressed the duo.

Stewart Scarlett hesitated, but the other disciple rushed forward without a second thought, attempting to assist.

At that moment, however, a surge of black energy spewed from Corpse Granny’s mouth, enveloping the Blue Wave Island disciple.

Mere moments later, the disciple shriveled into a dry husk, looking no different than a corpse.

Stewart Scarlett’s face turned pale.

”Deputy Island Master, what are you doing?”

”What am I doing? Isn’t it obvious? If you don’t want to end up like him, then get out and bring me some living bodies—preferably Cave Heaven Realm Martial Artists. If not, even Half-step Cave Sky Realm ones will suffice.”

Corpse Granny sneered.

Heavily injured herself, she couldn’t act directly against Stewart Scarlett due to the distance between them, forcing her to resort to alternative methods.

Just as Stewart Scarlett was about to speak, the sound of movement emerged from outside the temple again.

”Heh heh, lucky you, girl. Two fat lambs are delivering themselves to us. Step aside and assist this old woman in ambushing them.”

Corpse Granny directed.

”I obey, Deputy Island Master.”

While Stewart Scarlett did despise Corpse Granny’s demeanor, she cared little about what the old crone did to other martial artists—as long as they weren’t from Blue Wave Island.

With these thoughts, she hid behind the door, simultaneously letting out a piercing scream, ”Help~~!”

Outside, Ling Xiao and Leng Mei had just turned up, drawn by the stench of blood. Upon hearing the scream for help, the two exchanged glances but didn’t move.

”Master, could be a trick.”

”Hmm. Still worth checking. I saw Corpse Granny enter this dilapidated temple earlier. That hag’s been plotting to kill me. If there’s an opening, we should take her out first.”

Ling Xiao nodded, his lips curving into a cold smile.

Others might think he was clueless about the situation inside the temple, but he saw everything clearly.

With that, he stepped into the temple.

The moment he stepped in, a cold flash of steel shot from behind the door, targeting his neck.

Oddly, the attacker didn’t seem to intend to kill him but rather aimed to hold him hostage. Ling Xiao chose not to retaliate, allowing the long sword to rest against his throat.

He wanted to observe further before taking action.

The one who ambushed him wasn’t particularly strong—they were also Half-step Cave Sky Realm, merely at the mature stage.

”Hee hee hee, what a twist of fate. I wondered who it might be—it’s you, brat, and that little girl beside you?”

Corpse Granny broke out into a triumphant grin.

She recognized Leng Mei as someone difficult to deal with, but with Ling Xiao held hostage by Stewart Scarlett, Leng Mei would undoubtedly tread cautiously. This made Corpse Granny all the more smug.

”Corpse Granny? What’s your plan? The Imperial Jade Seal is no longer in my possession.”

Ling Xiao frowned as he questioned her.

”Heh heh, scared now, aren’t you? Sure, the Imperial Jade Seal may no longer be yours, but the grudge between Blue Wave Island and you remains. After killing so many of us, did you really think you could walk away unscathed?”

Corpse Granny sneered.

”Looking for revenge, huh? Should’ve said so sooner. Problem is—can you actually kill me?”

Despite being held hostage, Ling Xiao remained composed, his calm demeanor unsettling both Corpse Granny and Stewart Scarlett.

”Here’s some advice: those who died from Blue Wave Island had it coming. If you insist on vengeance, I’ll ensure Blue Wave Island disappears entirely from the Divine Phoenix Continent!”

Ling Xiao’s voice was icy.

The current Ling Xiao had every right to make such claims.

After all, he wasn’t merely representing himself—he stood for the vast Heavenly Dynasty Empire.
