She Used Me for a Dare… Now I Own Her Mother

Chapter 48: Calculated Chaos

Sophia stepped onto the Blackwood University courtyard, her heels clicking on the cobblestones like a countdown no one else could hear.

The midday sun caught the silk of her white blouse, clinging to her curves as if sculpted to perfection.

Heads turned... students, professors, even the campus security... but she barely noticed. She knew they were looking. She thrived on it.

She had not been called the most beautiful goddess on campus for nothing.

Her mind, however, was far from the gawking crowd. It was sharp, precise, buzzing with strategy.

How could she make them crumble? How could she orchestrate everything so they tore at each other, blinded by desire and jealousy, without her lifting a finger beyond the first move? Every glance, every word, every whisper would be her pawn on a chessboard no one else could see.

And then, the spark of an idea cut through the swirl of possibilities, sharp and undeniable.

She pulled out her phone with a slow, deliberate grace, dialed the number without hesitation, her green eyes scanning the courtyard as if measuring everyone and everything.

The line connected, and a familiar voice answered, careful and curious.

”Do you have it?” Sophia asked, voice soft but loaded, almost casual... yet beneath it ran a current sharp enough to slice through hesitation.

”Yes,” the voice replied, cautious.

”Good,” Sophia said, letting the word linger. ”Listen closely. Nothing too obvious. Just a few moves, and everything will fall into place. Remember... subtle. No one can know. Not yet. Not until it’s time.”

A pause. Sophia smiled faintly, almost to herself. ”Yes... exactly like that. Perfect. Just follow it, and wait. Let them play into it themselves. You’ll know when it’s done.”

Another pause. She chuckled softly, a sound that carried both amusement and a quiet thrill. ”Good. Then do it. And remember... the pieces move best when they think they’re moving themselves.”

She ended the call, slipping the phone into her bag, her smile widening as a thrill ran through her.

Nobody knew what she had planned. Nobody knew who she had spoken to, or what steps she had set in motion. And that was exactly how she wanted it.

Her mind raced ahead, painting the aftermath in vivid, tantalizing detail. She imagined subtle tensions flaring, whispers growing into accusations, and desire turning into jealousy, all without her raising a finger again.

’Oh, how beautifully predictable they are,’ she thought, a low laugh escaping her throat. ’They’ll think it’s all their choices, their mistakes. And I... I’ll just watch.’

’Let’s see how you handle this, my dear Alex,’ she thought again, a soft shiver of thrill running through her. The game had begun. And Sophia was already winning.

Today, she was radiant, her smile bright as she waved to passing classmates, her cheerful facade a polished weapon.

”Hey, good to see you!” she called to a group by the coffee cart, her voice warm, disarming, masking the storm within.

The courtyard buzzed with students, their laughter mingling with the rustle of leaves and the distant clink of cafeteria trays.

Sophia’s group lounged at a picnic table under an oak, their chatter pausing as she approached.

The group sat clustered under the courtyard’s warm sun, chatting quietly. Tyler leaned back, smirking. ”Honestly, he’s walking around like the king of the campus now. You’d think he forgot what happened in the ballroom.”

Robert chuckled, shaking his head. ”Yeah, just a little over a month ago, and he’s acting like he owns everything. Funny how quick he forgets he got beaten and thrown away like a dead dog.”

Jennifer nodded, rolling her eyes, though a hint of unease crossed her features. ”He really thinks he’s untouchable now. The whole campus is buzzing about him.”

Before anyone could add more, Sophia appeared at the edge of their circle, her smile radiant and effortless.

”Hey, everyone!” she chimed, her voice warm, naturally bright. ”Wow, you all look so... happy! It’s so good to see you guys.”

”Marcus, you’re looking so hot today,” she said softly, her eyes catching his for a heartbeat longer than casual.

He blinked, taken by the effortless charm, his guard melting under the softness of her tone.

The group’s chatter paused for a moment, eyes lingering on Sophia’s easy grace. Her laugh, light and musical, drew attention without seeming deliberate.

She linked arms with Marcus, her touch soft, girlfriend-like, her voice a velvet purr: ”You okay after last night, babe? I missed you.”

”Wait... what happened, Sophia? You look almost like a different person today,” he said, his voice full of awe and curiosity. She laughed lightly, brushing his cheek, her fingers lingering.

She turned to the group, her cheer unwavering, her eyes sharp as she scanned their reactions. ”Robert, how’d that econ exam go?” she asked, her voice dripping with care, leaning close. Robert, the loyal supporter with his earnest smile, lit up.

”Aced it, I think. You’ve really changed, Sophia, for the better. This is the real you.” Tyler, sipping a latte, his intellectual air evident in his wire-rimmed glasses, nodded.

”Your mom’s a visionary... one week of banning you, and look at the end product.”

The group murmured agreement, charmed by her warmth, but Jennifer’s smile was tight, her eyes burning as Sophia stole the spotlight.

Jennifer tried to interject, boasting about a party invite: ”Got VIP for Saturday’s bash at Club Luxe.”

Sophia redirected, her tone sweet but sidelining: ”Oh, Jen, you’ll kill it there!” Her words disarmed, but Jennifer’s fists clenched under the table, her coffee growing cold, her nails digging into her palms.

Jennifer’s envy was visceral, a bitter pulse in her chest. She’s playing everyone, and they’re eating it up. I’m invisible next to her.

When a classmate complimented Sophia’s blouse...”That’s stunning, Soph!”...Jennifer snapped, ”It’s just a blouse,” but her voice drowned in Sophia’s radiant laughter, the group’s eyes fixed on their queen.

Jennifer’s jaw tightened, her forced smile twitching as Marcus pulled Sophia closer, ignoring her attempt to join the conversation.

She was nothing last week, crying like a little girl. Now she’s acting like a queen again? Jennifer stewed, her thoughts dark, plotting to undermine Sophia’s reign.

Turning back to the group, she tilted her head with mock curiosity. ”By the way... what were you all talking about before I came?”

Tyler hesitated, then shrugged. ”Uh... just Alex, I guess. He’s walking around like he owns the campus now. Totally acting like the ballroom thing never happened.”

Sophia’s smile deepened, sweet and amused. ”Big shot, huh?” she said, brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear. Her tone was airy, playful... but every word weighed, carrying a subtle spark.

”Funny how some people start acting... mighty, as if nothing or no one can stop them.”

Robert nodded, eyes narrowing. ”Yeah... like he’s the new boss or something.”

Sophia’s laugh was light, teasing, almost casual. ”The new boss... hmm, that’s an interesting way to put it. Do people really think he can just... step into that role? That the old rules don’t matter anymore?” She let the pause stretch, scanning the group as if pondering aloud.

Jennifer’s smile tightened. ”Well... maybe someone should remind him, right? Make sure he never forgets his place.”

Sophia tilted her head, eyes sparkling with mischief. ”Oh? And how do you suppose one would... do that?”

A murmur ran through the group. Tyler muttered under his breath, smirking darkly. ”Teach him a lesson he won’t forget... Harsher than the last one. ”

The tension thickened, like dry kindling awaiting a spark. Robert’s jaw clenched, and Jennifer’s hands curled into fists beneath the table.

Even Marcus, still leaning toward Sophia, felt the stirrings of adrenaline. ”Let’s teach this bastard a lesson, he’ll never forget. ”

Sophia’s smile stayed bright, her laugh soft and musical. She leaned just slightly closer to Marcus, eyes sparkling. ”Well, it seems some people are... eager to play,” she murmured, her voice low, honeyed, and teasing. ”I can’t wait to see how much manliness you boys can really show.”

Inside, she was already savoring the chaos she had ignited. The fire had been lit, and the group was already ready to fan the flames.

______

The cafeteria hummed with the midday rush... clattering trays, laughter, and the hum of conversation, but a ripple of tension cut through the noise as Marcus Steele and his entourage entered.

Heads turned. Phones peeked from pockets. The air shifted.

Marcus’s athletic frame led the group, eyes scanning until they landed on Alex. A smirk tugged at his lips. ”Aren’t you being a little too comfortable, charity case?” His tone carried the old arrogance, the assumed superiority.

Alex leaned back against the table, calm and deliberate. He let the words settle before replying, a slow, confident grin forming. ”Comfortable? No. I’d say I’m observing the usual entitled routine. Very predictable, Marcus.”

Tyler snickered behind him, Robert stiffened, and Jennifer arched an eyebrow. Marcus’s face hardened. ”Predictable? You think that little change in your looks makes you king of the campus? You’ve forgotten your last lesson, haven’t you?”

Alex tilted his head, his gaze sharp, eyes flicking over Marcus with the precision of someone who had studied human behavior for months. ”King? No. But I do find it... amusing how you insist on playing the same hand, expecting a different result. Bold, if nothing else.”

Marcus stepped closer, his voice rising. ”Amusing? You’re just a charity boy. A scholarship kid trying to act like he belongs here. I think it’s time someone reminded you of your place.”

Alex didn’t flinch. He leaned forward slightly, voice calm but slicing. ”Remind me? Or remind everyone else that the real measure of a man isn’t inherited wealth, Marcus, but how he carries himself. And judging by your theatrics... you’re failing spectacularly.”

Tyler muttered under his breath, smirking. ”He’s bold. I’ll give him that.”

”Spectacularly?” Marcus growled. ”You’ve got some nerve, thinking you can stand there and mock me.”

Alex let his grin widen, eyes glinting. ”Nerve? Perhaps. Or maybe clarity. I see your desperation. The rest of the cafeteria sees it too. It’s... fascinating, really, how fear masquerades as dominance.”

Robert clenched his jaw. ”Watch it, Alex.”

Alex leaned back, crossing his arms, every movement exuding control. ”Watch what, Robert? You? Marcus? Tyler? Or just the show you’re performing for everyone else?”

The room felt electric. A dozen students hovered nearby, sensing the tension, some whispering, some filming. Marcus’s hand twitched, but Alex’s calm dominance held the spotlight.

Marcus’s tone dropped, dangerous. ”You talk too much. Let’s see if your confidence holds up when words aren’t enough.”

Alex’s grin sharpened, smooth, lethal. ”Oh, Marcus... I think you already know it doesn’t. But go ahead. Let’s see how the performance ends.”

Marcus surged forward, ready to throw the first punch. Tyler and Robert mirrored his movement, surrounding Alex.

A sharp, commanding voice cut through the rising chaos. ”Enough!”

All heads snapped toward the entrance. Dr. Tisha Wells strode in, auburn hair catching the light, her presence radiating authority. Every step precise, every eye on her. The cafeteria fell silent, save for the low murmur of tension.

Marcus froze mid-swing, chest heaving. Alex relaxed slightly, though his eyes never left Marcus.

Tisha’s voice carried, firm and unyielding: ”Break it up. Now. Marcus, my office. Immediately.”

Marcus’s smirk faltered, replaced by a flicker of uncertainty. Tyler and Robert backed off. The tension deflated, but the verbal fire between Alex and Marcus still lingered, sharp as ever.

Alex’s grin remained smooth, controlled... but Marcus’s voice cut through as he retreated, low and dangerous. ”Don’t think someone will always come to save you next time.”

Tisha’s gaze met Alex’s, a faint flicker of acknowledgment passing between them. The duel was over... for now. But the message was clear. Alex had not only survived the provocation... he had owned it.
