Earth's Greatest Magus

Chapter 2992: Heart Demon

A month had passed, and throughout that entire time, Emery had remained in seclusion.

He sat cross-legged on the cold stone floor of the inner cultivation chamber beneath the Neo Terra Palace. The air around him was perfectly still, untouched by wind or sound, disturbed only by the slow rise and fall of his breathing. Spiritual energy flowed through the chamber in steady currents, gathering around him like mist, yet none of it brought peace.

Deep within, his mind was in turmoil.

The death of Gwen was the obvious wound.

In the first days, he had told himself that the weight of it would pass. Grief had its hours, its days, its weeks. Eventually, it thinned into something a cultivator could carry.

He had buried losses before.

Friends.

Comrades.

This one was different.

This one was not thinning.

A restlessness had taken root behind his ribs that no meditation could touch. Focus slipped through his fingers like wet sand. A heaviness sat on his chest as though invisible stones had been stacked there one by one in the dark.

He had analyzed himself repeatedly and eventually concluded that the cause was twofold.

The shock of Gwen’s death had struck him in the immediate aftermath of his soul-battle within Parasite X’s sea of consciousness, when his mental defenses had been at their weakest. His soul had not yet fully recovered. Cracks still lingered within his spirit.

The grief had not landed upon a clean foundation.

It had landed upon cracks.

What had taken hold inside him was no ordinary mourning.

It had lodged itself within his Dao Heart like a splinter of black iron.

By the second month, the splinter had begun to rot.

A terrifying mind disease of a cultivator.

The Heart Demon.

It wore his face.

He would see it sitting across from him during meditation.

Standing at the edge of his spiritual sea.

”Why weren’t you there?”

The same three words. Always the same three words.

”You are a failure.”

Its voice carried his own tone perfectly.

His own cadence.

His own certainty.

”Why did you have to go be a hero? If you had stayed with her, this wouldn’t have happened.”

”See what you’ve done?”

The chamber seemed colder.

The spiritual energy around him trembled.

”You cannot escape fate.”

Emery’s pagoda flared in defiance.

Brilliant layers of spiritual light erupted through the darkness, and the shade wearing his face dissolved into smoke once more.

For now.

But the splinter lodged within his Dao Heart had grown teeth.

It no longer merely whispered.

It hunted.

By the third month, a new face appeared.

One far more terrifying than his own.

A familiar voice came first, drifting through the darkness like a forgotten melody.

Painfully familiar.

Then she stepped out of the shadows.

Long silver hair cascaded over her shoulders, gleaming beneath the pagoda’s distant light. Pale silk flowed around her figure, untouched by dust or time.

His breath caught.

Silva.

She wore the wedding dress.

The same dress she had worn on their last day together.

Silva looked at him with sad eyes.

Eyes that carried neither anger nor hatred.

Only disappointment.

”You failed to protect her, too,” Silva whispered. ”Just like you failed to save me.”

Emery could not move.

His chest felt as though someone had driven a blade straight through it.

”Why couldn’t you save us...?”

”You are a failure.”

He wanted to speak.

Wanted to deny it.

The words would not come.

The heart demon lurking at the edge of the abyss swelled larger and larger, feeding on every moment of hesitation.

”You weren’t there”

”Either time”

”You failed”

The words echoed endlessly.

By the fourth month, the abyss had begun to claim him.

The words crashed down on him in waves now, repeating, accumulating, drowning out the steady chime of his pagoda. His two avatars dimmed at the edges, fading like figures stepping back into mist.

He remained cross-legged within the darkness, trying to hold against a tide that had no shore and no end.

###

Outside the sealed door, Morgana finally cracked.

She had not raised her voice in six months. Now she stood before the great sealed door, one palm pressed against the ancient stone, her voice rising for the first time.

”He’s going to die in there. Move.”

Klea stood between her and the door.

Through the blood-bond, Morgana had felt everything Emery felt—the shape of the battle, the depth of the wound, the crushing grief, and the thin, stubborn thread of him still fighting against the darkness.

The bond was the reason she was breaking now.

It was also the reason Klea would not let her through.

”We need to give him time,” Klea said quietly.

Morgana stared at her.

”How much time?”

”As long as he needs.”

###

One year has passed.

Emery sat at the bottom of the abyss.

The heart demon had now spawned many faces. The shade of himself. Silva in her wedding dress. Senior Izta, Senior Fuxi, his master Xion, and his father.

All of them. Every loss. Every regret.

They circled him in the darkness and recited his failures back to him, one syllable at a time, until even the sound of his own heartbeat felt like an accusation.

”You failed.”

”You couldn’t save us.”

The words never stopped.

They became the rhythm of the abyss itself.

Emery was drowning.

His pagoda had dimmed to a faint glow.

He was almost ready to dissolve.

And then, very softly, a light arrived.

It was not bright. It came from nowhere in particular and settled across the abyss like the first hint of dawn against a long winter sky, and it carried with it a presence he knew the moment he felt it.

Gwen.

She came to him as she had been at fifteen.

Before Britannia’s court had hardened her. Before the weight of a crown and duty had settled upon her shoulders. Before everything—when she had still been a girl standing in a sun-warmed garden, her hair untied and dancing in the breeze.

And with sudden bewilderment, Emery realized he too had changed.

He was standing as he had been on that day.

A young boy clutching a small wrapped box in trembling hands, ashamed of how plain the gift was, certain she would take one look at it and laugh.

He had been so afraid that day.

And somehow, he was just as afraid now.

She walked toward him through the darkness.

Emery braced himself for what he had feared back then—for the box to be slapped from his hands, for disappointment to follow, for the dream to break apart before it had even begun.

Instead, fifteen-year-old Gwen looked at him with warmth.

And said, very simply:

”Emery. It’s not your fault.”

The words struck him like sunlight through a window he had not realized had been boarded shut.

”You are not a failure.”

He could not breathe.

The darkness around him seemed to stop.

”I am fortunate,” she said softly. ”All because of you.”

She reached out her hand.

Toward him.

”Get up,” she said gently.

Then again,

”Get up.”

The splinter in his Dao Heart did not shatter.

It dissolved.

In the slow, gentle way of frost going out of the grass under the first warm sun.

Not removed. Finished.

For months, it had sat buried deep within him, poisoning every thought, turning every memory into a blade. It had fed on regret, on grief, on every moment he wished he could reclaim.

Now, its grip loosened.

The black iron lodged within his heart softened.

Melted.

Faded.

The wound did not vanish; it became part of him, the way old scars become part of a body. The heart demon lost its teeth in the same breath. The circling faces fell silent.

Emery slowly lifted his head.

Gwen stood before him.

Somewhere during their conversation, she had aged.

The fifteen-year-old girl was gone.

Before him stood the last Gwen he remembered.

Pale silver robes drifted around her.

Her long hair swayed in a wind that did not exist.

She smiled.

”I am glad,” she said softly.

The air around her felt strange.

His voice came thin.

”Is this a dream... or an illusion?”

She did not answer.

She only said:

”One life has passed. Another opens. I hope we will meet again.”

Her hand pressed once more against his chest, warm.

And then she was gone.

Inside the chamber, Emery’s eyes opened.

The lines of his Dao Heart had reordered themselves. Where the splinter had been was now a small, clean place — a quiet center he had not had before.

###

At the same time,

On the other side of Dawnstar, the half-ruined temple where Gwen had made her final stand had been rebuilt.

A new statue stood at its center—white marble veined with silver, depicting the Star Maiden in flowing robes, her hands extended in eternal benediction.

Her face was Gwen’s.

The opening of the new temple had been timed to coincide with the anniversary of her death.

Hundreds of thousands of citizens knelt throughout the plaza and along every street radiating outward from the building, candles and white flowers held carefully in their hands.

The atmosphere was solemn.

Reverent.

Peaceful.

Then, suddenly—

A single column of pale silver light erupted from the heart of the temple.

It soared straight into the morning sky, rising past rooftops, past towers, past drifting clouds, until it pierced the high blue heavens before dispersing into a quiet shower of silver motes.

The crowd looked up as one.

Gasps echoed through the streets.

Across every street of Dawnstar, the chanting began of its own accord.

”...blessed be our lady, the Star Maiden...”
