When She Stops Being Dramatic

Chapter 59: Chapter 41: The 1950s’ Wife of Chaff and Bran (41)

A full Manchu-Han feast—made entirely of tofu—was spread before him. He could only look, only imagine. For a foodie, this was excruciating. His mind had no room for anything else!

A faint blush colored the skin around Zhu Yun’s foxy eyes. Her fingers traced his cheek, feeling the man’s tense muscles and his pitiful gaze.

She pressed her lips to his. As he closed his eyes to savor the moment, she slowly ground against them and let out a soft chuckle. ”Nope.”

”Why?” A perpetually starving man had just caught the scent of meat, only for the meat itself to shake its head and refuse him. He couldn’t help but ask, his tone a bit fierce.

”Comrade Zhu Yun, please correct your attitude. Before we got married, I confirmed with you again and again that we were to be partners, not roommates!”

He immediately realized his tone was off and added pitifully, ”Or... do you want to build up our feelings after getting married before we can take the next step?”

’Love grows over time.’ It sounded nice, but for him, it was pure torture. ’Can you leave a fried pastry in a dog kennel and expect it to be safe?’

’Bah, he wasn’t a dog, but his wife truly was a mouth-watering fried pastry.’

He never thought he’d see the day he was this impatient. It wasn’t just surprising to others; he found it rather novel himself.

Zhu Yun just laughed, wrapping her arms around his neck. Her body shook like a flowering branch in the wind, a tempting blush spreading across her face. Her eyes were moist and bright, and strands of her hair, carrying the faint scent of plants and flowers, tickled his nose.

Chu Shenyu’s eyes reddened. He scooped her up and started for the bedroom again.

Zhu Yun hurriedly said, ”It’s true! My ’relative’ is visiting. There’s a fifty-fifty chance of this on your wedding night!”

Chu Shenyu didn’t stop. He tossed her onto the bed, pressed down on her, and gave her a hard kiss. He buried his head, starting to wrestle with the buttons on her clothes, while asking in confusion, ”What relative? Didn’t you say you cut ties with your family back home? Did the neighbors call them over?”

She hadn’t even thought of that, but hearing him say it, Zhu Yun’s face fell. ”That does sound like something the Wang Family would do!”

”But the ’relative’ I’m talking about is a woman’s monthly visitor!” she whispered into his ear.

Discussing this with a man she had only just married and barely knew, Zhu Yun felt a baseless sense of shame.

Chu Shenyu froze. His face went ashen as he stared at her. Torn between laughter and tears, he gritted his teeth. ”Why didn’t you say so sooner? You just kept teasing me! Don’t you know men can’t handle being teased?”

”If my future ’happiness’ ends up ruined because of this, you’ll be the one crying!”

With that, he shot up, his usual cool and aloof demeanor returning. ”Starting today, we will maintain a distance of at least half a meter. We’ll wait until your ’relative’ leaves.”

Zhu Yun didn’t get up from the bed. She just nodded. ”So, you’re going to make your new bride spend her wedding night alone?”

His brow twitched as he glanced at the bed.

They were both adults; each of them would take up a fair bit of space. And with half a meter between them...

The mere thought of them sharing a bed, even without any deep exploration—just the hot weather, their thin clothes, and the potential for any random touch—was enough to fill Chu Shenyu with both bliss and agony.

He’d already gotten a good sense of his wife’s fantastic figure over the course of the day. His nose began to feel a little itchy.

He touched it with his finger. The two of them froze, staring dumbly at the bright red blood on his fingertip.

Zhu Yun, showing no restraint, grabbed a pillow and burst out laughing.

’Oh my god, so that stuff from novels and TV shows is actually real...’

Chu Shenyu walked out stiffly, his arms and legs on each side moving in unison.

For the sake of his own health, he resolutely rejected the temptation. ”I’m sleeping in the study tonight!” he declared resentfully.

After he left for the bathroom to wash his face, Zhu Yun laughed for a while longer, then propped her head on her hand and began to think about the original owner’s life story.

In a novel, to cater to the readers’ tastes and create a dramatic plot, there’s always a supporting female character who gets dragged through the mud just to make the female lead shine.

If the female lead was born with a silver spoon, doted on by every man, woman, and child in her family, then the original owner of this body was a wildflower blooming defiantly on a cliff’s edge.

The original owner had parents and a handful of siblings, every last one of them a real piece of work. Her father’s approach to farm work was to ”fish for three days and dry the nets for two”; if he had a single cent, he’d spend it on alcohol. Once drunk, he’d start beating his wife and children. There wasn’t an ounce of family affection to be found.

And her mother? She might seem timid in front of her husband and quiet around others, but she was ruthless on the inside. She doted on her eldest and youngest sons and didn’t much care for the middle one. As for her other two daughters, they were just girls, and she’d slap them around for the slightest displeasure.

With parents like that, what kind of children could you expect them to raise?

If her father hadn’t gotten the idea to sell his daughter early on, the original owner probably wouldn’t have developed so perfectly.

Old Mrs. Wang knew she was beautiful and had also heard about the Zhu family’s situation. While agreeing to a high bride price of two hundred yuan, she also made Mr. Zhu sign a document formally severing their family ties.
