When She Stops Being Dramatic

Chapter 53: Chapter 39: The 50s’ Scorned Wife (39)

Far from finding her unabashed focus on money vulgar or off-putting, Chu Shenyu thought it showed she was frank and sincere.

No one can escape their worldly desires. Some are drawn to beauty, others crave fine food, some lose themselves completely in books, while others love gold and silver—the most straightforward things that make the world go round.

Just as others had said, she was first drawn to his looks. But he was confident he could keep her convinced—that even when he grew old, he would without a doubt be a dapper, cultured old man.

He was captivated by his wife’s cooking, devoted to her beauty, and now admired her directness. And since he lacked neither money nor ability, being valued by his wife was a core part of his pride as a man!

Zhu Yun’s eyes curved into crescents. She couldn’t help but play along and praise him, ”My man is so amazing!”

’A truly powerful, gleaming golden arm indeed.’

A blush appeared on Chu Shenyu’s face. He mumbled, ”There’s more amazing where that came from,” and with that, he swept her up into his arms, bridal style, and headed for the bedroom.

”The-the sun hasn’t even set yet,” Zhu Yun said, her arms wrapped around his neck. She’d been infected by his shyness and found herself blushing at the slightest thing.

’Back when I was at the Space-Time Administration Bureau, people called me Sister Yun. No hardened veteran dared to act tough in front of me. I never imagined I’d see a day like this.’

Chu Shenyu avoided her gaze, kicking the bedroom door shut with his foot. With a perfectly straight face, he said, ”My mom was right. A night of passion is too short. I have to extend the battle line.”

The two newlyweds were just about to get things started, their clothes barely off, when a loud BANG BANG came from the front door.

Chu Shenyu’s taut muscles were screaming, his blood was boiling, and then suddenly, he was forced to a halt. The feeling was like dousing hot steel with cold water—a sudden SIZZLE, and he was chilled from head to toe!

Zhu Yun chuckled and got up, slowly getting dressed. She poked him with her pale, perfectly shaped toes.

”I told you, it’s broad daylight. And we’re newlyweds, so we’ll have a constant stream of guests...”

Chu Shenyu glanced at her pretty, adorable feet, ran a hand through his hair in frustration, and glared at her. ”You didn’t mention that last part.”

’When he was home alone, she was the one who always knocked on his door to bring him food. He rarely had visitors other than family.’

’Who could be so tactless? Instead of taking an afternoon nap, they had to come and interrupt a couple’s private time.’

Still, he scowled as he put his clothes back on. Seeing his wife was decent, he went and opened the door with a cold expression.

It was Old Mrs. Wang from across the hall. She took one look at Mr. Chu’s rumpled clothes and knew exactly what had been going on.

She ignored Mr. Chu’s cold expression and said with a wide smile:

”My daughter-in-law is pregnant and having cravings, so I fried up some crispy pork, radish balls, and sweet cakes.”

”I figured that even though you had a wedding banquet, you probably didn’t get to eat your fill, so I brought some over. There’s egg drop soup and meat zongzi, too—all things Xiao Zhu loved to eat back home.”

Chu Shenyu’s brow furrowed slightly.

’The old woman’s hands were rough, with dirt permanently ground into the skin. Her thick, yellow fingernail was half-submerged in the soup.’

His stomach churned. And in that moment of hesitation,

the old woman raised her voice. ”Little Chu, I know you’re a university graduate, a capable man. I know you look down on an old woman from the countryside like me. But aren’t I just worried that you two youngsters don’t know how to run a household?”

”Whatever disagreements our two families had in the past, we’re living across from each other now. Shouldn’t we look out for and be considerate of one another?”

”When neighbors make something good, they share a bowl with each other. That’s the most harmonious way to live! What kind of grudge could we possibly have that would make us never speak again? And on your happy day, shouldn’t we just let bygones be bygones?”

”If you feel bad about taking it, just give me a handful of candies in return...”

Zhu Yun walked out unhurriedly, peering over Chu Shenyu’s shoulder with her fluffy head and smiling at the woman. ”Well now, Aunt Wang, do you think this is the village? Or did you think the Chu family is like yours, so harsh on their daughter-in-law that they don’t let her eat her fill at her own wedding, forcing an outsider like you to worry about her?”

”TSK TSK, I don’t want to have a complete falling out with you, so you should stop coming over with ulterior motives, like a weasel visiting a chicken for New Year’s. I have hands and feet. If I’m hungry, I can just make myself something that’s easy on my stomach.”

”Who knows if you’ve secretly put laxatives in it? Sigh, I still remember that incident with Mr. Wang’s third uncle soiling his pants. Should I remind you of the details?”

The old woman’s lips twisted into a sneer. ”Fine, don’t eat it! So harsh for a new wife. We’ll see how many good days you get to enjoy!”

”You don’t need to trouble yourself with that,” Zhu Yun scoffed, pulling her husband back and slamming the door with a BANG.

”Comrade Chu Shenyu, from now on, when it comes to the people across the hall, you are only to have work-related dealings with Wang Xianbing. You are not to get involved in any of their other affairs. Understood?” she emphasized sternly.
