[BL] Oops! I Seduced My Sister's Fiance (And Now I'm Pregnant)

The executive’s voice carries easily across the auditorium, smooth and practiced, the kind of voice that has addressed rooms like this one many times before.

He talks about the project first. The community center, the site, the development goals, and the vision Dingshan had when they first acquired the land. He uses words like *sustainable* and *inclusive* and *future-facing*, words that are true enough and also designed to land well with the investors in the central rows who are here to decide whether this vision is worth their capital.

Then he talks about the competition.

He explains why Dingshan chose to hold an open process rather than simply commissioning an established firm. Access to new thinking, he says. Merit above reputation. The belief that the best idea should win regardless of whose name is attached to it.

I am listening to him and also, strangely, not listening to him. The words reach me but they arrive slightly delayed, like sound traveling across water. My hands are folded over my notebook in my lap and I am focusing on keeping them still.

Somewhere in the room a camera shutter clicks.

The executive continues. He describes the competition entries, the quality of submissions, the difficulty of the selection process. He talks about the decision to bring the top two designs together rather than simply choosing one, about what that collaboration produced and why the board believes in it.

And then he says our names.

*Elliot Jun and Li Runze.*

The sound of my own name in that room, at that volume, with that weight behind it, does something strange to my perception of time.

For a brief second I am not entirely sure where I am. Then Elliot’s elbow makes brief, deliberate contact with my arm and I come back to the auditorium, to the lights, to the hundreds of eyes that have turned toward the row where we are sitting.

”That’s us,” Elliot says quietly, already rising.

Right.

I stand.

***

The stage is brighter than the rest of the room.

I register this immediately when we walk out — the specific quality of light under the presentation panels, warmer and more direct than the general auditorium lighting, the kind that means cameras will get clean footage and there is nowhere to look vague.

Elliot takes the podium first.

This was always the plan. He handles the technical framework, the site analysis, the structural decisions and their reasoning. He is good at this, precise and confident, moving through the material with the same directness he brings to every session. The room listens. Investors make notes. Board members watch his hands when he gestures toward the projected drawings.

I stand slightly to his right and slightly back, watching the audience watch him, and I use the time to breathe.

In through the nose.

Out slowly.

The east elevation drawing is currently on the main screen behind us, the corrected version, the one that accounts for the load path change from the entrance revision.

I know every line of it. I know why each decision was made and what it cost and what it solved. That knowledge sits in my body in a way that is different from memorization — it is the residue of months of actual work, of arguing and revising and being wrong and correcting it.

Whatever happens in the next thirty minutes, I know this project.

Elliot concludes the technical section and turns slightly toward me.

”The design philosophy behind the project,” he says, to the room and also to me, ”originated largely from my collaborator’s approach. I’ll hand over to Li Runze to speak to the vision.”

He steps back.

The podium is mine.

I move to it.

For one full second, standing in front of that microphone with the room spread out before me, I understand completely why people describe stage fright as a physical sensation.

My heart is beating frantically, the lights are very bright, the front row is close enough that I can see individual faces — board members, senior executives, and there, slightly to the left, the person I recognize as Jin Hao, watching with calm, attentive eyes.

I look down at my notebook.

Then I close it.

Because I don’t need it. I know what I want to say. I’ve known it for months, built into every decision I made about this project, and reading from notes now would be the wrong way to say it.

I look at the room.

”The first question I asked about this site,” I begin, and my voice comes out steadier than I expect, ”was who is going to use this building.”

The room is quiet.

”Not what it should look like. Not how many square meters we had to work with. Those questions matter and we spent a lot of time on them. But the first question was the people.” I pause, not for effect but because I want to say it accurately. ”A community center only works if the community actually chooses to be there. That means the building can’t feel like it was designed for someone else.”

I talk about the entrance. Why it faces the road rather than the originally planned south orientation, which would have given better morning light but meant that every person arriving from the main access point would approach the building’s side rather than its face. A small thing on paper. A significant thing when you are the person walking up to it every day.

I talk about the green corridors. How they were designed as connective tissue rather than decoration, paths people would actually use to move between different parts of the development rather than green space that looks good in renderings and gets avoided in practice. The circulation numbers support this. I explain why.

I talk about the community center’s interior, how the layout prioritizes sightlines that allow people to see what is happening in the space before they commit to entering it, because research consistently shows that people are more likely to engage with a space when they can preview it from the threshold.

At some point during this, I notice that the room has changed.

It is a subtle shift, the quality of attention. Investors who were glancing at documents are not glancing anymore. A journalist near the left wall has stopped adjusting their equipment and is writing steadily. Two board members in the front row are leaning very slightly forward.

I am not performing for them.

That is the thing I realize mid-sentence, in the middle of explaining the threshold sightline decision. I am not performing. I am explaining something I actually understand and believe in, and the room can tell the difference.

I finish.

The questions come after a brief transition period, Peng Hao moderating from a second podium to the side.

Several go to Elliot, technical questions about construction sequencing and material specifications that he fields with characteristic efficiency. I watch him answer and feel the specific satisfaction of having worked alongside someone long enough to trust them completely.

Then a question comes to me.

An investor, mid-fifties, reading glasses pushed up on his forehead, leans slightly toward the microphone.

”Your proposal clearly prioritizes community accessibility and public use. How do you reconcile that with budget realities? At what point does community value become too expensive?”

The question hangs in the air for a moment.

It isn’t hostile, it isn’t even unfair. If anything, it is exactly the kind of question someone investing real money should ask.

I think about it for a second, then lean slightly closer to my microphone.

”Because reducing cost isn’t the same thing as removing value,” I say.

Several people who had been writing stop and look up.

One of the investors exchanges a brief glance with the man seated beside him.

Further down the row, someone gives a small nod.

”There were areas where we could simplify materials without affecting how people use the building. Finishes can change. Certain decorative elements can change. Some specifications can be adjusted without altering the experience of the space.”

I pause briefly.

”But there were other decisions that directly affected how people would interact with the building every day. Those were the decisions we protected.”

The investor nods once, motioning for me to continue.

”A good example is the main circulation corridor connecting the community center to the outdoor activity zones. During one revision phase, we looked at reducing the corridor width to lower construction costs.”

A few board members exchange brief looks. They remember the discussion.

”On paper, the savings looked reasonable. But when we ran the circulation models, we found that narrowing the corridor created congestion during peak use periods. Parents, children, elderly visitors, and event traffic would all be forced through the same bottleneck.”

I glance toward the projection screen.

”The cost reduction was measurable. The reduction in usability was much larger.”

A quiet murmur moves through part of the audience.

”So we kept the wider corridor. Not because it was the more expensive option, but because it was the option that actually allowed the building to function the way it was intended to.”

The investor studies me for a moment.

”And you believe that justifies the additional cost?”

”Yes,” I answer immediately.

The certainty in my own voice surprises me slightly.

”Because if a community center becomes inconvenient to use, people stop using it. At that point, you’ve saved money constructing a building that failed its purpose.”

For a second, the room is completely quiet.

Then the investor smiles slightly and writes something in his notebook.

”Fair answer.”

A second question comes, then a third, and by the third one something has settled in my chest that was not there this morning. Not confidence exactly, more like the absence of doubt. The work is real. The decisions were made for real reasons. I can account for all of them.

The applause begins in the front row and moves back.

For a second, standing under the stage lights with the applause echoing through the auditorium, I find myself looking toward the back of the room.

Not because anyone I know is there.

Because some part of me still expects this moment to disappear if I look at it too directly.

Months ago, I had been sketching alone.

Now hundreds of people had seen my work. More importantly, they had listened.

Standing beside Elliot on the stage, I try to find the right word for what this moment is. It doesn’t feel the way I imagined it would, back in the estate study alone with sketches spread across the table. It is quieter than that. More ordinary in texture.

But it is real in a way nothing imagined ever is.

This room, these people, that name attached to this work — Li Runze, not Wuchen, just Runze — in an industry I almost left entirely before I ever really began.

The applause continues.

Elliot says something beside me, quiet enough that only I can hear it.

”You didn’t need me up here.”

”That’s not true,” I say.

”Mostly not true,” he allows.

The lights on the stage are warm.

I stand under them and let the moment be what it is.
