Taming the Wild Beast of Alamina

The shift happened too quickly for anyone to pretend it was still theoretical.

Otto moved first, instinct taking over before strategy could catch up. He stepped toward Arion with one hand already half-raised, as though he meant to reach for his son and drag him bodily back behind the marked barrier. Dax caught his forearm before he could take the second step.

”Not yet.”

Otto looked at him sharply.

Dax did not release him immediately. His attention remained fixed on the beasts gathered around Arion, on the way, the nearest one still pressed its massive head against Arion’s knee, while another had settled at his side with unnatural calm, both of them large enough that one wrong movement could turn the clearing into blood and torn flesh.

”They’re watching us,” Dax said.

That was true.

The stillness had changed. What had looked almost domestic a moment earlier now carried a different tension beneath it, not yet violence but readiness. The beasts were no longer merely awake. They were aware, every heavy head angled toward the men around Arion, every dark eye tracking distance, intention, and movement with the patient concentration of predators deciding whether something belonged too close to what they considered theirs.

Arion stood at the center of that attention and could not seem to make his body obey him.

At first, he thought it was shock.

Then he realized shock should have felt sharper than this.

His mind was not blank. It was slow.

Everything around him seemed to drag as though the air had thickened into some invisible substance through which thought and movement both had to force their way inch by inch. He could still hear the others. He understood every word. He recognized Dax’s controlled tone, Otto’s rising tension, Hendrik’s clipped instructions, and Nero’s silence turning dangerous.

But understanding had become separate from action.

His head felt too heavy on his neck.

His tongue did not seem connected to the rest of him.

Even the simple act of drawing breath had begun to feel strangely deliberate, as though his body wanted permission for each one.

Nero took one step closer and stopped the moment the nearest beast’s ears flattened.

”Arion.”

Arion looked at him.

That took effort.

Nero’s expression changed the instant their eyes met. Whatever he saw there clearly did not reassure him.

”Leave them,” Nero said, his voice lower now, steady in the way he used when trying to keep someone from doing something stupid. ”Walk back to us.”

Arion wanted to.

He tried.

Nothing happened.

Only the lines continued crawling outward beneath his collar and down the backs of his hands, black channels threading through the map of his glands with a heat that did not yet hurt but promised it might if given time.

Otto took another step despite Dax’s grip.

”Arion, look at me.”

He was already looking.

That was the problem.

He could hear them. He could see them. He could not seem to make any of that translate into the things they wanted from him.

Victor’s voice crackled through the earpiece again, tinny with distance and somehow sharper for it.

”I need immediate readings from all sensors. No one enters physical range until we know whether the beasts are responding to his output or whether his pheromonal structure is destabilizing. Arion, if you can hear me, describe any change in motor control, temperature, field perception, or gland pressure—”

The sound scraped across Arion’s nerves like metal.

He shut his eyes briefly.

That did not help.

Victor kept talking, the words too fast now, too clinical, too constant, stacking one over another until Arion wanted nothing more than silence. He wanted the pressure to stop, the questions to stop, the voices to stop climbing over each other in his head while his own thoughts dragged uselessly behind them.

He tried to say it.

Victor, can you stop talking for a minute?

The sentence formed.

It even felt calm.

What came out was neither calm nor remotely measured.

”STOP IT!”

The shout tore out of him hard enough to scrape his throat raw.

Everything changed at once.

The pheromones burst from him in a violent wave that seemed to hit the clearing from all directions at once, not the deep, familiar vetiver that had marked Arion for years, but something else entirely. It smelled darker, wilder, and threaded with the bitter metallic edge of corrupted air and something feral beneath it.

Otto went still.

Dax’s hand dropped from his arm.

Nero’s eyes narrowed with immediate focus.

The beasts surged to their feet.

The one at Arion’s knee rose with its shoulders bunching beneath corrupted hide, lips peeling back just enough to expose rows of unnatural teeth. The second moved half a step in front of him, angling its body between Arion and the others as though it had understood the shout as an instruction rather than an outburst. Farther back in the trees, other shapes began to move, slow at first and then with increasing certainty as dormant beasts lifted themselves from the undergrowth and turned toward the clearing.

Hendrik swore under his breath.

The monitors on his tablet emitted a shrill warning tone.

Victor’s voice vanished completely from the channel.

Arion barely noticed.

The surge had left his skin burning.

His heart was suddenly too loud in his chest, each beat driving more of that unknown scent through the air around him, and his eyes hurt now, not with pain exactly but with strain, as if the brightness behind them had become too strong for his skull.

He heard Otto say his name again.

He heard Dax answer something low and fast.

He heard Hendrik ordering the outer team to hold positions and not fire unless commanded, because a shot here would either start a massacre or teach the beasts that men with guns were the greater threat.

Through it all, Nero remained silent for several seconds.

When he finally spoke, the tone in his voice had changed completely. No amusement remained in it at all.

”Do not move toward him.”

Otto looked at him.

”He’s barely standing.”

”And the beasts are listening to whatever just came out of him.”

Nero’s gaze stayed fixed on Arion, on the yellow in his eyes and the black lines cutting like curses beneath his skin.

”If you pressure them now, they won’t see rescuers. They’ll see a challenge.”

That was the correct assessment. Arion knew it. Somewhere inside the molasses dragging through his skull, he knew it perfectly.

He still could not answer.

The first beast took another step forward, placing itself more fully between Arion and the others, head lowered, muscles coiling beneath corrupted flesh. Two more emerged behind it from the trees and spread outward along the clearing’s edge. Their bodies formed a loose crescent around Arion, defensive rather than chaotic, like a living wall assembled without being told twice.

Arion swallowed against the thickness in his throat.

He wanted to tell them he had not meant that shout as an order.

He was no longer entirely certain that was true.

His mind felt slow, but something beneath that slowness had sharpened the moment the beasts moved. Some instinct buried under years of control now recognized their postures, their attention, the weight of their focus settling around him like a perimeter closing into place.

Otto took one small step and stopped when the nearest beast bared its teeth.

Dax did not try again.

Nero’s hand had disappeared inside his coat, not drawing a weapon yet but ready if the clearing tipped from warning into attack.

Arion stood in the middle of corrupted pheromones that no longer smelled remotely like his own and realized with a cold clarity that frightened him far more than the beasts did that the animals were not merely reacting to him.

They were waiting for him.
