Doctor Reborn as a Peasant Girl? Time to Get Rich

Chapter 81: Chapter 81: Who Said Bai Zhi Can’t Have Children?

”Damn it. You’ve got some nerve, trying to cheat me, Yang Sigeng? Trying to fool me with a hen that can’t lay eggs? Just you watch how I’ll deal with you.” He’d been wondering these past two days. ’How could a young maiden of twelve or thirteen possibly agree to marry a forty-something widower like him?’

’So that was the trick. Good thing he hadn’t gone to pick her up yet; he’d almost fallen for the Bai Family’s trap.’

Yang Sigeng rounded up a few men from his village. Every one of them was tall and brawny, intimidating enough to scare someone just by rolling up their sleeves, without even saying a word.

The group of seven or eight men went straight to Huangtuo Village. Once there, they asked for directions to the Bai Family’s home and headed right over.

When the villagers saw the menacing way these men carried themselves, they knew the Bai Family must have caused some trouble and hurriedly followed them in a group toward the Bai residence.

The Bai Family’s home had been a real hub of activity lately, with a new drama playing out every day, never the same one twice.

It was the perfect way to enrich the villagers’ utterly deprived social lives.

When Yang Sigeng and his men arrived outside the Bai Family’s courtyard, he immediately spotted Liu—the woman who had come to Baiyang Village to arrange the marriage. He promptly kicked the wicker gate open.

Liu jumped in fright. ’These seven or eight strange men, how could they just barge in like that?’

She took a closer look and saw that the man in the lead was none other than Yang Sigeng, the man she’d met in Baiyang Village. She had even accepted his betrothal gift of ten taels of silver.

Seeing her dazed expression, Yang Sigeng sneered, ”What? It’s only been two days. Don’t tell me you don’t recognize me, woman?”

Liu frowned. ’Why is this Yang Sigeng so crude and rude? This is the Bai residence, and my husband, son, and mother-in-law are all here. His words could easily cause a misunderstanding, making people think we’re far more familiar than we actually are.’

”Brother Yang, what brings you here now? Didn’t we agree on three days? Tomorrow is the third day!” Seeing how many men he’d brought, Liu felt uneasy, but she didn’t dare offend him.

Yang Sigeng snorted. ”Three days? So on the third day, you could send me a little hen that can’t lay eggs? Do you take me, Yang Sigeng, for a sucker?”

Yang Sigeng’s voice was extremely loud. Every word carried so clearly that everyone heard him—not just the people in the courtyard and the house, but also every single one of the gawking villagers outside.

Liu asked, bewildered, ”What do you mean? What’s all this about a little hen that can’t lay eggs? Surely there must be some misunderstanding?”

”A misunderstanding? Do you take me, Yang Sigeng, for a fool or a deaf man? Your Bai Zhi was beaten by your family and now she can’t bear children. The whole of Huangtuo Village knows about it, and you’re telling me it’s a misunderstanding?” Yang Sigeng grew more agitated, his voice booming even louder.

Hearing this, how could the gawking villagers outside not understand what was going on? It was clear: this Bai family member had secretly promised Bai Zhi to the man before them, Yang Sigeng.

Bai Zhi wasn’t even thirteen, but Yang Sigeng was an old widower who had already beaten three wives to death. Sending Bai Zhi to marry him—wasn’t that the same as sending her to her death?

The crowd shook their heads, silently cursing this Bai family member as utterly unscrupulous. To think they could pull off something so devoid of conscience.

Hearing the commotion, Old Mrs. Bai, Bai Erzhu, and the others inside the house all came out.

Old Mrs. Bai frowned and swept her gaze over the men in the courtyard. ”What’s going on?” she asked, displeased. ”Who are all these people?”

Liu whispered a few sentences in Old Mrs. Bai’s ear, explaining the situation.

Old Mrs. Bai’s expression changed slightly. She immediately declared, ”That’s impossible! Who said our Bai Zhi can’t have children? Who said it? Have them step forward and confront us!”
