The Queen's Mage

Time in the cell passed like rot.

Not day or night, but a slow deepening of cold and ache.

The first hour, Serali fought the manacles. She strained her wrists until the old scars reopened, tested the chain against the stone ring, mapped the perimeter of her world by fingertip and then again by memory, in case her senses lied. She catalogued every brick, every scrape where her boots scuffed the floor, every pattern of condensation as it threaded down the wall and pooled along the edges of her straw pallet.

The cell was not built for comfort, but it was built for endurance. The air was never so damp as to breed disease, never so dry as to split the skin. She recognized the logic.

In Lyehira, the best dungeons were the ones that kept their contents alive.

The iron at her wrists was not ornamental. It bit and burned, a heatless fire that numbed her arms from elbow to fingertip, and after the second hour, Serali felt the magic inside her retreat: a cowering animal driven deep behind the bone. She tried to summon even a flicker of shadow, the old reflex, but the manacles drank it and left her empty.

She paced instead, counting steps.

Three lengths from door to rear wall.

Three lengths back.

On every turn, a deliberate twist of her heel to keep from favoring the pain in her knee.

The movement was pointless.

She did it anyway.

Somewhere beyond the door, a guard coughed. Later, boots passed. Later still, a tray slid through a hatch near the floor: water, bread, a bowl of something thin and pale that might have been porridge if porridge had given up all claim to dignity.

Serali drank the water.

She left the bread until hunger became more irritating than pride.

No one asked questions.

That, more than anything, unsettled her.

The Queen had said no one would speak to her, and no one did. Not the guards. Not the jailor. Not the young servant who returned hours later to collect the empty bowl with eyes fixed firmly on the floor. Orders moved through Avalusia’s palace with a clean obedience Serali did not trust.

In Lyehira, cruelty often improvised.

Here, it appeared to follow procedure.

At some time after the torches in the corridor guttered low, the sound of boots came again.

Not the shuffle of a jailor.

Soft leather. Unhurried. A pace that expected doors to open before it and people to fall silent behind it.

Serali stopped pacing.

She braced her feet, squared her shoulders, and made herself stand in the center of the cell rather than against the wall. She had learned the hard way that to look weak was to be made weaker.

The lock turned.

The Queen of Avalusia entered the corridor beyond the bars.

She brought no retinue, no ceremonial guards, only the man from the night before at her back. Daravan, Serali had heard one of the guards whisper after the first visit. Captain Daravan, Captain of the Palace Guard. The title suited him. He stood like a locked gate given flesh: young enough that the severity should have looked borrowed, but it did not. Broad-shouldered, quiet, watchful, with a sword at his hip and eyes that measured exits before faces.

The sort of man who did not need to threaten because his competence did it for him.

The Queen, unfortunately, was worse.

Allandra Luina carried no visible weapon, but Serali did not make the mistake of thinking her unarmed. The cool gold of her presence seemed to rise from her skin and dress, a brightness so clean it made the torchlight sickly by comparison. She was not soft-gowned tonight. Or if the dress was soft, the woman inside it was not. Her hair was pinned back with martial severity. Her shoulders were bare beneath a fall of emerald silk and gold thread, and the faint light around her throat was not jewelry, not entirely.

Mantle-light.

Serali had heard stories.

Everyone in Lyehira had heard stories about Allandra Luina.

The Warrior Queen, they called her when they wanted to make her sound savage. The Mantle’s chosen when they wanted to make her sound impossible. First woman in Avalusian memory to bear the Mantle. Widow queen. Sun-blade. Monster of the western front.

In Lyehira, soldiers said she had fought like something out of an old blood-song during the last war, gold light burning around her hands, bodies dropping wherever she turned. Some said she had cut down ten men after taking an arrow through the shoulder. Some said twenty. Some said the Mantle itself had armored her in sunlight when the line broke.

Serali had never known how much to believe.

Looking at her now, in the cold beneath Myrae, she believed enough.

And because she believed enough, she knew this with absolute clarity: Allandra Luina could not learn whose daughter she was.

Not yet.

Perhaps not ever.

The Queen whose father, mother and husband had been assassinated by Vulmar’s people. The Queen who had become the first woman to hold Avalusia’s Mantle after blood had carved her path to the throne.

If Allandra learned Serali was Vulmar’s bastard, there would be no ship, no questions, no careful weighing of truth. There would only be a knife given a face.

For a long moment, neither woman spoke.

Serali forced herself to meet the Queen’s gaze.

She recognized the strategy: Allandra’s posture was not vanity, but calculation, a way of imposing the weight of her presence on anyone within arm’s reach. Her eyes moved, methodical, from Serali’s bruised cheek to the black hair plastered to her brow, to the chain between her wrists, to the old scars at her throat and hands.

Allandra’s mouth did not smile.

“Turn around,” said the Queen.

Serali did.

The iron at her wrists made it graceless, but she kept her spine straight.

Daravan approached with the keys. He did not leer. Did not enjoy himself. Did not speak. Somehow that made him harder to read. He unfastened the chain from the wall ring, not from her wrists, and left her just enough slack to cross the cell before guiding her toward the bars.

Not roughly.

Not gently either.

He stopped her an arm’s length from Allandra.

The Sun Fae queen did not flinch at the proximity. If anything, she studied Serali more closely.

“Serali of Lyehira,” she said, the Solvari accent flattening the name into an unfamiliar shape. “Or is that still all you will give me?”

Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

Serali let silence answer, though she was careful not to let it become too obviously insolent.

Allandra’s eyes narrowed a fraction.

“I could list the reasons you are here,” the Queen continued, “but you know them as well as I do. The face. The voice. The bone structure and eyes of Xuiven nobility, wasted on a woman claiming to be no one. You draw too much attention, and you made the error of doing it in Myrae.”

Serali’s lips curled.

“I did not make the error. Your city did, by existing.”

For a moment, the Queen’s eyes darkened.

Serali wondered if she would be struck.

But Allandra’s control was absolute. She let the threat hang, then banished it with a breath.

“I have already heard your story,” Allandra said. “Today I am interested in what changes when you tell it again.”

“Nothing.”

“Everyone says that before they contradict themselves.”

“Then this will be a disappointment.”

Daravan’s gaze flicked briefly to Serali’s face.

Not amusement.

Not quite.

Allandra did not look away from her.

“You used a glamour.”

“Yes.”

“Where did you get it?”

Serali lifted one shoulder. ”It was a gift.”

“From whom?”

“A friend.”

“Conveniently untraceable.”

“Conveniently ugly.”

Allandra’s expression did not move.

“You expect me to believe a street-bought glamour concealed Xuiven eyes from my entire city until one spell burned it away.”

“I expected it to get me to a ship,” Serali said. “Your city was not my intended audience.”

“Which ship?”

“The one leaving in the morning.”

“You do not know the name.”

“No.”

“Who sold you passage?”

“A man at the third pier with a red scarf and a missing tooth.”

“Better.”

Serali blinked.

Allandra’s gaze sharpened. “Was that detail true yesterday and you withheld it, or did you invent it between then and now?”

Serali cursed herself.

Quietly.

In several languages.

Allandra saw that too.

“I forgot,” Serali said.

“People rarely forget the person holding their escape in one hand.”

“People remember strangely when they are bleeding in chains.”

That landed.

Not visibly. Not enough to satisfy.

But Allandra paused half a breath longer than expected.

Then she moved on.

“My agents found signs of pursuit near the northern roads.”

Serali’s blood went cold.

She kept her face still.

Allandra watched her too closely.

“They found bodies near an abandoned watchtower on the border,” the Queen continued. “Lyehiran agents. Dead. Some by blade. Some by magic.”

Khalen.

The name struck through her before she could stop it.

She buried it.

Allandra’s voice softened. “You did not cross the border alone.”

Serali said nothing.

“Who helped you?”

“No one worth remembering.”

The Queen’s nostrils flared.

She did not like being toyed with.

Good.

Anger could be useful if aimed carefully.

“Was he the one who taught you the shield?” Allandra asked.

Serali looked at her.

The wrong question.

Allandra saw that too.

Of course she did.

“No,” Serali said.

“Then who?”

“No one worth remembering,” Serali repeated.

Allandra stepped closer to the bars. “That answer has lost what little charm it had.”

“It was not designed for charm.”

“You were taught by someone with access to Xuiven military forms. Your shield in the market matched their structure.”

Serali’s mouth went dry.

Cillian had said nothing about that.

Of course he had not known what Avalusians knew. Of course he had not imagined she would use it under lanterns in the middle of a festival square. Of course he had taught her enough to survive and not enough to lie well afterward.

She hated him for that.

Briefly.

Lovingly.

“No one taught me military forms,” she said.

“Liar.”

The word cracked across the cell.

Serali went still.

Allandra did not raise her voice further.

“You are either trained enough to be dangerous or ignorant enough to be dangerous. I have not decided which I prefer.”

“I am flattered there are options.”

Allandra ignored that.

“You were running from Lyehira. Not toward us, but away. What did you do?”

Serali laughed, a brittle sound.

“I failed to be useful. That is the only crime that counts back home.”

The Queen considered her.

“What does that mean?”

“It means exactly what it sounds like.”

“No, it does not. You answer in edges and expect me to mistake them for substance.”

“And you ask the same questions hoping I will grow more interesting.”

Daravan moved.

Only a slight shift of weight.

Enough.

Serali’s pulse jumped before she could stop it.

Allandra noticed.

“Careful,” the Queen said.

Serali looked at her.

“Is that advice?”

“It is a courtesy.”

“I did not realize queens gave those.”

Allandra’s face cooled.

For a second, Serali saw the Warrior Queen of Lyehiran stories: not shouting, not blazing, but quiet with the discipline of a drawn bow. A woman who could burn a battlefield because she had decided it was necessary and sleep badly afterward, if at all.

“If you wish to live past tomorrow,” Allandra said, “you will tell me why they are chasing you.”

Serali flexed her fingers.

The iron answered with its deep, nauseating wrongness.

“What does it matter?” she asked. “I am here now. Your men broke my magic. Your cell keeps me in. Your captain could cut my throat before I took one step.”

Daravan did not react.

Allandra’s voice dropped. “That is not the only way to break you.”

The old terror stirred in Serali’s belly.

The room changed.

Not visibly. Not for anyone else, perhaps. But for Serali, the cell became a dozen other rooms at once: a root cellar with no light, Rania’s chamber, Vandra’s hand forcing her face to stone, the small dark spaces where people spoke softly before causing pain because soft voices made it worse.

She let the terror pass.

Slowly.

Carefully.

She did not lower her eyes.

“I know,” Serali said.

The Queen held her gaze.

Something in Allandra shifted.

Not mercy. Serali would not insult either of them by calling it mercy.

Recognition, perhaps.

The sort that cut both ways.

Allandra’s eyes moved to Serali’s wrists, where the reopened scars had darkened around the manacles.

“You fought the irons.”

“I was bored.”

“You were afraid.”

“Yes,” Serali said.

The answer left the Queen briefly silent.

Serali had not meant to give it. Or perhaps she had. It was hard to tell anymore which truths were strategy and which simply slipped through because she was too tired to hold every gate.

Allandra looked at her for a long moment.

Then said, “From whom did you flee?”

Serali’s throat closed.

The answer had shape.

Vulmar.

Rania.

The palace.

Her father’s rooms before sunrise.

Cillian’s hands shaking as he shoved boots into her lap.

Khalen saying, If they catch you, they do not take you back to the kitchens.

Serali swallowed.

“Lyehira,” she said.

“That is not a person.”

“It can be.”

“I asked you this yesterday.”

“And I answered yesterday.”

“And yet you are still in chains.”

Serali smiled without humor. “Then perhaps the answer was not the problem.”

Allandra’s mouth tightened.

Good.

Let her be angry. Let her think Serali difficult, insolent, trained, dangerous. Let her think anything except daughter.

Because daughters of no one important did not have Xuiven eyes.

Daughters of Vulmar did.

And Allandra Luina, Warrior Queen of Avalusia, would not hesitate over Vulmar’s blood if she thought it had been sent into her city.

The Queen’s voice cut into the thought.

“You claim you were not sent.”

“I was not.”

“You claim you came only to leave.”

“I did.”

“You claim you exposed yourself only because a local girl was being attacked.”

“Yes.”

“Do you understand how absurd that sounds?”

Serali leaned closer to the bars despite the pull of the chain. “Do you understand how absurd it is that I keep telling the truth and everyone keeps being disappointed?”

For one dangerous second, silence.

Then Allandra’s eyes flashed.

“You think truth absolves you?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“I think truth should at least be recognized when it is standing in front of you bleeding on the floor.”

Daravan looked away.

Just briefly.

Allandra did not.

“You are very certain of your innocence.”

“No,” Serali said. “I am certain of that night.”

The Queen went still.

Serali breathed once through the ache in her ribs.

“I did not spy. I did not come to hurt anyone. I bought passage. I kept my head down. I ate your ridiculous festival food. I watched your ridiculous dancers. I accepted a ridiculous glass cat from a child with more confidence than sense. Then I saw a man hurting a girl and told him to stop.”

Her voice roughened.

“He did not stop.”

Allandra’s face had gone unreadable.

Serali hated that more than anger.

“So I made him.”

“And revealed yourself.”

“I noticed.”

“And now you sit in my dungeon.”

“I noticed that too.”

The corner of Allandra’s mouth almost moved.

Not amusement.

No.

Something worse.

Interest.

Serali had spent too much of her life learning the dangers of becoming interesting.

Allandra straightened, cloak shifting behind her.

“Captain Daravan.”

Daravan looked to her.

“Keep her alive. No beatings. No questioning from the lower guard. If she asks for water, give her clean. If she speaks, listen and write it down.”

Serali blinked.

Daravan inclined his head. “Majesty.”

Allandra’s gaze remained on Serali. “Food twice a day.”

“How generous,” Serali said.

“Do not mistake basic care for generosity.”

“I would never accuse a queen of generosity without evidence.”

That time, Allandra’s mouth did move.

Barely.

Then it was gone.

Daravan guided Serali back toward the wall ring. He fastened the chain again, leaving slightly more slack than before. Not much. Enough for her to sit without twisting her shoulders. Enough to notice.

Serali hated that she noticed.

The cell door shut.

Allandra lingered on the other side of the bars, green eyes fixed on Serali’s face.

“If you have anything useful to say,” she said, “now is the time.”

Serali’s tongue felt thick.

The old answer rose.

No one worth remembering.

No one important.

Just leaving.

Just passing through.

All true enough to be worthless.

Instead, she said, “You should watch the shadows, Queen.”

Allandra’s gaze sharpened.

Serali leaned back against the wall, the iron heavy between her wrists.

“They learn.”

The Queen did not react.

Not much.

But Serali thought she saw the faintest flicker of respect, or maybe recognition, before Allandra turned away.

The corridor swallowed her gold.

For a long while, Serali listened to the retreating footsteps.

Daravan’s first.

Then the Queen’s.

Then only the cold.

The pain in Serali’s wrists was unchanging, but the world around her had shifted by some small, dangerous measure. She had measured her enemy, and her enemy had measured her. The next time, she knew, the knives would be sharper.

She slept, eventually, curled around her manacled hands, and dreamed of glass palaces and the sun breaking on a world that did not want her.

In the morning, she would begin again.
