I Was Mistaken for a Saint in a Dark Fantasy

The status of divine magic was similar to taking one characteristic each from British Medicine and the medical system of the United States in my previous life.

Mostly the bad ones.

The number of patients a low-rank healer could see in a day averaged five.

This was at a level comparable to the accessibility of British Medicine.

As for the cost, one had to be prepared to have their family’s pillars uprooted if they weren’t careful.

You could roughly guess its majesty seeing how Marquis Barlot (Count) almost squandered his entire fortune while keeping a personal physician to save his wife before meeting me.

And this was at a level comparable to the costs of the United States.

In other words, divine magic in another world was like a crazy collaboration between British Medicine and the United States’ medical system.

The reason why improvement hadn’t been made despite this was, ironically, because divine magic was the most certain method.’If the results were bad instead, alternative medicine would have seen development.’

A person whose limbs were severed regains them.

If only they had enough money.

A cerebral hemorrhage patient who would have lived with aftereffects for a lifetime in my previous life could confidently walk out of the infirmary on their own two feet.

If only they had enough money and personal connections.

In a world like this, there was no way alternative medicine would properly catch people’s eyes.

It would see some development due to a lack of money, but it could never replace divine magic.

On top of that, becoming a healing priest demanded a strict unlock condition like some hidden class, requiring one to be a ’devout priest with a mage’s talent,’ so increasing the number of healers wasn’t even one of the options.

Now, here was the question.

In a world like this, a healer who could barely treat 5 people a day could now see 50 patients.

In that case, how exactly would The Military react?

The answer was already decided.

”Before Teacher made that Penicillin, sparring was only for the entrance exam or once per semester, right? But I heard they’re going to have it every fifteen days from now on.”

Listening to Eri’s explanation, I felt like I knew what The Military’s intention was.

Previously, it was at a level where they barely had enough to use on the residents and adventurers living in the Academy Territory.

To the point where if they carelessly overused it on the students, they would have to give up on those people.

It would be a waste to expend this precious resource on students, wouldn’t it.

Therefore, The Military had no choice but to opt for tightening their belts.

But what was this?

With the appearance of Penicillin, there was no longer a need to tighten their belts.

As if they had been waiting for this moment, The Military began throwing a Divine Power Settlement Party.

Just like a district office paving roads at the end of the year even if it means burning through their budget.

”Besides, even in the worst-case scenario, Teacher will be residing here, so they’re basically telling us to just fight to the point of not dying.”

I was thankful they trusted me, but.

The conclusion being like this made me feel somewhat peculiar.

Furthermore, the rule for sparring that Eri told me was a sight to behold.

1. As long as you don’t aim for the torso and head, it is OK.

2. Victory and defeat are decided when someone breaks Rule 1, one side loses consciousness, or the individual concerned declares forfeit.

3. Conversely, as long as one’s life is not in danger, the spar can continue even if limbs are broken.

And Eri was a student who utilized Rule 3 better than anyone else.

”Hehe. Teacher. I’m currently on a 20-win undefeated streak in sparring against my peers, you know?”

Eri flaunted her broken leg like a medal and spun a tale of heroism.

”The kids in the Hero Department have a lot of softies, so they declare forfeit even if just their ankle gets twisted. Which means if we take it all the way to the end, I win.”

Eri.

Normally, if your ankle gets twisted, forget about sparring, you should lose by default for it to be normal.

However, to Eri, who hailed from Limbus Pit, the Empire’s Gotham, a twisted ankle seemed to be nothing.

”Fufu. Although my theory scores are average, the story changes if the class shifts to focus on sparring.”

At that, the girl with silver-blue hair who was quietly listening beside the bed where Eri was recuperating—Freya—looked appalled.

”Unnie. Even so, throwing a knee strike at a great hammer was a crazy thing to do.”

”Freya. You just don’t know any better. In actual combat, you have to give up your bones to take their flesh.”

”...Isn’t it usually the opposite?”

But Eri remained unyielding.

”Is it? Anyway! What I’m saying is, it’s a difference in mindset.”

”Since Unnie puts it that way, I guess I have nothing to say...”

Noble’s children like Freya were accustomed to sparring with safety measures in place to prevent them from getting hurt.

On the other hand, Eri was a veteran who had followed Wangcho around, building up all sorts of experience through conflicts between organizations.

With her discussing mindset, there was simply no way to refute it.

”But hey, Unnie. Why didn’t you use Fighting Aura back then? Your opponent was someone who didn’t know how to use Fighting Aura. If you used Fighting Aura, you wouldn’t have gotten hurt.”

”Wangcho, no, my master told me before. To be considered a proper Rank 1, you have to know how to cloak yourself in it only when necessary so as not to waste Fighting Aura.”

”Then by any chance, did you just miss the timing?”

”Teehee.”

Eri stuck out her tongue and gave a bright smile.

Listening to this, I unconsciously gave her head a nuggie.

”So you’re bragging.”

”Ouch! Teacher, that’s mean!”

”I finally saw the child I found in Limbus Pit here after a long time, only to find her bragging about breaking her leg like this, so how did you think I would react?”

”Hiing...”

Eri shrank her shoulders with a tearful expression.

I let out a deep sigh and called out to my assigned student, Ayla.

”Student Ayla.”

”Yes, Teacher! Should I prepare a Minor Heal?”

”No. We are going to do an examination first.”

If it was an open fracture (where the bone breaks and pierces through the flesh), we would have to go straight into surgery, but if it was a simple fracture, it was a different story.

”Please bring someone who knows how to use Clairvoyance Magic.”

It was in place of an X-ray.

Of course, just because it was Clairvoyance Magic didn’t mean you could get a result at the click of a button.

If it were that easy, there would be no reason to call a dedicated specialist.

”Yes, Lord Saint. Did you call for me?”

A slightly plump, round, panda-like healer approached.

The panda healer adjusted his round eyeglasses and spoke.

”Where exactly did this female student break?”

”Please check the entirety of her right side leg.”

”Understood.”

The panda healer closed his eyes and extended a hand imbued with divine power toward Erika.

A very faint light, roughly at the level of Refresh, dwelled in his hand.

He placed his divine power-infused hand above her knee, and with his other hand, held a Black Board beneath her knee.

Soon, the healer pulled out the Black Board he had placed beneath Eri’s knee and handed it to me as he spoke.

”The result is out.”

”Thank you as always.”

”Not at all. Isn’t this the technique that you, Lord Saint, taught me?”

On the Black Board produced in this way, a photograph strikingly similar to an X-ray had been developed.

Except it was an X-ray photograph with the black and white inverted.

The principle behind this photograph was simple.

I learned this from frequently performing surgery with Ayla, but a Heal was a technique that didn’t just end with injecting divine power.

Depending on the injured part and the type of injury, the degree to which divine power is absorbed and the formula that must be set for it changes.

For example, for a person with an open fracture and a wound, one had to perform a Muscle Heal and a Bone Heal separately.

Looking at it from the side, it just looked like the same Heal, but the priests were fiercely switching the types of Heal in their heads to achieve regeneration.

Right after I learned that fact, I made a proposal.

— ”Among the applications of divine magic, isn’t there a divine magic that erases ink? Then, if we prepare a Black Board and let it pass through the body...”

Every part of the body absorbs divine power differently.

And among divine magic, there is a divine magic that erases ink like bleaching it.

By combining these two facts, I was able to create an Another World-style X-ray.

From above, you irradiate divine power mixed with Purification Magic and Refresh, and place a Black Paper on the opposite side.

If you do that, since each tissue absorbs a different amount of divine power, the bones and muscles come out separated just like an X-ray.

’Another World is the best!’

To think there’s no worry of radiation exposure and all you need is a Black Paper!

Of course, in exchange for that price, the healers had to suffer diligently in place of an X-ray machine, but that was none of my business.

And the sect that received this new technique was none other than the Ardenu Sect.

That panda healer’s sect, and also the sect of our muscle Holy Knight Gregor.

”This is a technique Ayla will also learn someday, so keep it in mind.”

Anyway, every healer needs an X-ray.

Therefore, regardless of her sect, Ayla will also learn this technique.

That was a long tangent.

”Let’s see...”

I checked the condition of Eri’s knee.

I could see a kneecap fractured like a spider web, and a shin bone that had slightly misaligned downwards.

It seemed she really did a proper knee strike.

”It seems a surgery will be necessary after all. Do you consent as her guardian, Lady Freya?”

”Yes, I consent, Lord Saint.”

The Nihilrit Family is an early investor of The Black Saint.

Keeping that fact in mind, I spoke to Freya.

Freya also knew that fact well, so she answered properly.

At that moment, Ayla, who had been quietly watching, tilted her head.

”Wouldn’t an Intermediate Heal be enough?”

”There are too many students. We must reduce divine power consumption through surgery.”

After the consumption of divine power decreased due to the discovery of Penicillin,

The Military seemed eager to tightly squeeze out the leftover divine power.

And the Order seemed to have agreed to this as well.

”Could you secure an operating room for us?”

”Yes! I will secure it right away!”

In my previous life, I had to contact the Anesthesiology Department and ask them to schedule it several days later to secure an operating room.

But it is different here.

Not only am I currently the only one who can perform surgery as easily as eating a meal, but the surgical speed is ridiculously fast because of divine power.

There was no reason for patients to be backed up.

Thus, Ayla dashed off to schedule the operating room.

Lastly, I called out to the two students who were holding their breath in the corner, acting like a borrowed sack of barley.

”Student Jenny, Student Gwen. Will you two also observe today’s surgery?”

Gwen. And Jenny.

Ayla’s friends, and students who were working part-time at the infirmary to earn some allowance.

”When performing a knee reduction, it might be good to try using divine magic once.”

The reason I made this proposal was none other than The Military’s stance.

The Military increased the amount of sparring classes under the premise of students getting injured.

Some might call it heartless, but in my eyes, it was actually for the sake of the hero aspirants.

Ultimately, a hero is an existence that fights demonic beasts and demonkins while risking their life.

Those who pursue such a profession now had an opportunity to build experience without worrying about losing their lives.

Naturally, this would make no small contribution to lowering their death rate after graduation.

Once I thought of it like that, it also felt like an opportunity for the Department of Healing Arts.

”Perhaps the curriculum of the Department of Healing will also change a bit starting from the second semester.”

If the Hero Department grades based on sparring,

It seemed like a good idea for the Department of Healing Arts to grade based on practical training.

Since teaching material would constantly pour in anyway, couldn’t this be called a virtuous cycle.

And to review this possibility, I called Gwen and Jenny to the operating room.

”I think doing some pre-study beforehand would be a good opportunity for you students as well. How about it?”

”I-I will enter!”

Gwen immediately replied.

On the contrary, Jenny seemed somewhat hesitant.

However, that was only for a moment.

”I will do my... best.”

Jenny gave a reluctant nod.

And just like that, using Eri as a teaching material, I let the two of them observe a surgery for the first time.
