Chapter 617: Chapter 464: Grudges Eventually Settle into Dust

Indeed, it was she who had instilled inappropriate thoughts in her own son, forgetting that her son was young and lacked the ability to discern good from evil!

Under the cloak of night, a fast horse carried the mother and son away from the city!

Resentment had arisen, forming an emotional knot, her misguided education was one aspect, but the emotional burden of her little one was equally crucial, and she needed to cut off this knot from her son!

Only the bell ringer can untie the bell. Gu Changsheng would never let his son live trapped in the painful memories of the past!

In the cold winter of December, though Jiangnan was not as harshly cold as the north, it was still winter!

There were not many pedestrians on the street, but there were still people who recognized Gu Changsheng!

”Look, that is Lady Changsheng!”

”Yes! It’s Lady Changsheng! Only Lady Changsheng could wear red clothing so beautifully!”

”It’s already dark; where is Lady Changsheng riding to?”

”The one Lady Changsheng is holding in front of her, isn’t that Gu Residence’s Young Master? It looks like they are heading out of the city!”

”Have you heard? Today Lady Changsheng’s ex-husband’s family caused a stir at the Gu Residence again, and they all perished!”

”They deserved it! They heartlessly abandoned Lady Changsheng and her orphaned and widowed status. Now that Lady Changsheng has made a fortune on her own, they’ve tried to bother her time and again, and they met such an end because they brought it upon themselves!”

”But, that former crown prince, after all, is the Young Master’s biological father!”

”Oh... These matters of big households! It’s really hard to say!”

”...”

Ignoring the whispered gossip behind him, Gu Changsheng snapped the horsewhip in his hand and rushed straight for the City Gate, with the little bundle obediently snuggling in his mother’s embrace, his small little hands wrapped around his mother’s waist!

”Hurry! Open the City Gate! Lady Changsheng is here!” Guo Daqian, standing on top of the city tower, spotted the fast-approaching horse in red from afar and anxiously yelled to his subordinates behind him.

In the very next moment, the city gate guards, not daring to delay, immediately opened the City Gate.

”Boss, it’s dark already; why is Lady Changsheng leaving the city? Could it be that something has happened?” one guard lifted his eyes to the dark sky and turned to Guo Daqian, his voice laden with confusion.

”Slap!” Guo Daqian instantly slapped him and glared in anger, ”What could have happened? Don’t curse! With the County Prince fighting abroad, Liuzhou Region is guarded solidly by Lady Changsheng; what could possibly happen?”

”Then why is Lady Changsheng leaving the city at this time? It’s obvious that there’s something going on!” The guard, having received a slap, rubbed the back of his head and spoke hesitantly.

Guo Daqian, watching the approaching light cavalry, stroked his chin and pondered for a moment before speaking, ”I heard that those troublemakers from the Li Mansion all died in front of Gu Residence today!”

”Then what?” the guard asked, raising his head puzzledly. ”What does that have to do with Lady Changsheng leaving the city?”

”I heard Lady Changsheng ordered them to be buried outside the Gu ancestral graveyard...” Guo Daqian mused aloud.

”Tch! Such people should just be thrown in the Mass Grave Hill! Lady Changsheng is just too kind, still burying them outside her own family’s ancestral graveyard!” the guard retorted disdainfully upon hearing this. ”But still, what does this have to do with Lady Changsheng leaving the city?”

”Isn’t the Gu ancestral graveyard just outside the city?” Guo Daqian retorted with an annoyed glance at his subordinate.

”Uh...” the guard was left speechless.

”Do you see that little person on the horse? Gu Residence’s Young Master!” Guo Daqian pointed at the horse approaching the City Gate and sniffled, ”It seems to be for the Young Master!”

While they were speaking, Gu Changsheng had already crossed through the City Gate.

Seeing this, Guo Daqian hurried to the other side of the city tower and yelled towards the leaving silhouette, ”Lady Changsheng, I’ll leave the gate open for you!”

Gu Changsheng, as if not hearing anything, continued to drive his whip, heading out of the city without pausing!

”Leave the gate open... Boss, that’s...” the guard began, snickering immediately after hearing it.

”Slap!” Another slap was delivered, and Guo Daqian angrily turned around, ”What are you thinking all day long? Isn’t Liuzhou City just Lady Changsheng’s home; what’s wrong with me keeping the gate open for Lady Changsheng?”

”Yes, yes, yes! The boss is absolutely right!” the guard hastily nodded in agreement upon seeing this.

”Order everyone; Lady Changsheng is leaving the city, everyone needs to be alert. If there’s anything amiss, report immediately!” Guo Daqian, not bothering to argue further, waved his hand and commanded sternly.

”Yes!” the guard responded promptly and left to carry out the orders.

With the chilling wind biting at their skin, the mother and son sped away on their horse. As Guo Daqian had said, the Gu ancestral graveyard was located at the foot of Baili Mountain, just outside Liuzhou City, in a village with exceptionally auspicious geomancy!

The hundred acres of fertile farmland outside the cemetery had already been purchased by Gu Changsheng to create a sacrificial field!

”Mother, where are we going?” holding a Luminous Pearl in his hand, the little bundle led by his mother asked with a puzzled face.

”You’ll know when we get there!” Gu Changsheng patted his little head and continued along the path.

At the edge of the ancestral graveyard, the tenant farmer watching over it recognized Gu Changsheng and hurried to follow; Gu Changsheng, leading the little bundle, approached closer to the Gu ancestral graveyard!

There was still some distance from the ancestral Mausoleum of Madam Gu, and under the guidance of the tenant farmer, Gu Changsheng, led by the little meat bun, turned aside!

In the midst of the withered grass and broken branches, three new grave mounds stood.

Gu Changsheng watched as the tenant farmer arranged the already prepared offerings, waved them away, and then turned and walked with the little meat bun to the middle grave mound, saying gravely, ”Yaoyao, kneel down!”

The little meat bun, upon hearing this, flashed a hint of confusion in his eyes but still obediently knelt on the ground.

Gu Changsheng looked at the desolate trio of lonely graves among the overgrown grass, and slowly said, ”Yaoyao, this is where your birth father is buried. Although he never fulfilled his responsibilities as a father, he did bring you into this world!”

”Whether they treated you harshly or made you suffer, they are now buried in the soil. Let your hatred and grudges dissipate along with them!” Gu Changsheng stood tall, his red garment fluttering under the illumination of the Luminous Pearl. He looked down briefly at his son kneeling on the ground and continued slowly, ”Yaoyao, bow three times, fulfill your duty as a son and thank him for bringing you into this world!”

”Yes!” The little meat bun, initially startled, soon started knocking his head on the ground.

”Thump!”

”Thump!”

”Thump!”

The resounding sounds of bows echoed as Gu Changsheng’s gaze lingered on the grave, never looking back.

”Li Mufeng, grievances inevitably come to an end. At this moment, my entanglements with you and Li Mansion have finally reached their conclusion,” Gu Changsheng slowly closed his eyes and continued, ”Your mansion won Zhou Mu’s favor because of me and shone brightly once more, yet fell into decay because of me. Who is right and who is wrong, I no longer wish to dwell on it!”

Gu Changsheng, pausing here, suddenly opened his eyes and looked into the void, ”Being abandoned by Li Mansion, I, a mother and orphan, left Capital City, originally wishing to sever all ties with Li Mansion, for you to follow your path of riches and honor, and I, mine on a lone bridge!”

”Yet, of all things you shouldn’t have done, you sent assassins after me. I repeatedly forgave, saving your lives under Zhou Mu’s command, hoping you would reform and lead ordinary lives. Unexpectedly, you repeated your old ways, even pressing me with my son’s life!”

”Our past bond is now concluded, you owe me a life. Thus, let our grievances dissipate into the dust!”

At this point, Gu Changsheng couldn’t help but sigh deeply.

The soul of the original owner of this body, who had died because of being abandoned by Li Mansion, could now rest in peace!

”Mother?” the little meat bun, looking puzzled, raised his head towards his mother. Why did he feel a sense of desolation emanating from her?

Gu Changsheng, hearing him, turned around, slowly squatted beside the little meat bun, and touching his little head, said, ”Yaoyao, this is your birth father. The grace of being born is greater than heaven, even if they were wrong, you should not hate them!”

”Aunt Nian took their lives so that your master and I wouldn’t bear the infamy of killing your father, because their unchangeable nature would have been a future threat to you and me. Do you understand her intentions?”

”Yes!” The little meat bun nodded upon hearing this.

Seeing this, a hint of tenderness flashed in Gu Changsheng’s eyes, ”No matter what others say, Yaoyao, remember, only when your heart is free of hatred can you truly be happy. Do you understand?”

”Mother, I understand! They are already dead, I don’t hate them anymore!” the little meat bun said, nodding immediately and obediently responding.

”Good boy! From now on, each year during Qingming festival, if you have time, come here and offer three sticks of incense for them as a way to fulfill your filial duty. Understand?” Gu Changsheng said affectionately as he rubbed the little meat bun’s head tenderly.

”Alright! I remember!” The little meat bun, tilting his little head, rubbed it against the palm of his mother.

”Good boy!” Gu Changsheng then picked up the little meat bun from the ground.

After giving one last look at the desolate trio of lonely graves, the two hand in hand headed back the way they came.

”Son, in the future, you mustn’t speak lightly of life and death, understand?”

”But it was clearly you who said it...”

”That’s different! Should your mother’s indiscretion prompt you into similar behavior?”

”Uh...”

”You should follow in your grandfather’s footsteps, who knew both ancient and modern times, and developed an air of scholarly grace...”

”No! I want to learn from mother! Learn to be really powerful so I can protect mother!”

”Learn from mother, and what, you want to become a woman? Besides, mother doesn’t wish for her son to grow up into a reckless man who only knows how to fight and cause turmoil!”

”I wasn’t causing turmoil!”

”Right! You weren’t causing turmoil, you just lack an understanding of life and death...”

”No I don’t! Grandpa Bao said, being dead means you can’t eat, can’t gnaw on chicken legs, and can’t wear pretty clothes. That sounds quite sad!”

Gu Changsheng, hearing this, suddenly choked, struggled a few times, but managed to hold back from giving his own son a little slap!

Damn, there really was a flaw in her teaching!

”You should listen more to Monk Bu Jie and his chants when you get back! Damn, raising a little monk is definitely better than raising a brute!”
