The Maker: Hollywood

Daniel didn’t stick a multi-million dollar, revolutionary tech company in the basement of his movie studio. He was a billionaire. When he wanted to build something that didn’t exist yet, he bought the space to do it right.

Almost an year ago, while he was still polishing the final draft of the Vice City script, Daniel had quietly purchased an unmarked, three-story brutalist concrete building in Culver City. From the outside, it looked like a municipal water treatment facility. There were no signs, no logos, and the windows were heavily tinted.

Inside, it was a state-of-the-art technological fortress.

The entire second floor had been gutted and converted into a massive, freezing server farm to keep the heavy-duty rendering towers from melting down. Cables as thick as pythons were zip-tied and routed along the exposed ceiling, feeding down into an open-plan bullpen filled with ultra-wide monitors and empty energy drink cans.

Daniel stood with his arms crossed, watching the massive 8K center screen at the lead developer’s desk.

Marcus Blackwood stood next to him, wearing a sharp charcoal suit that looked entirely out of place among the hoodies and graphic tees of the programming team. Marcus was holding a ceramic mug of coffee, looking at the screen with a mixture of awe and deep financial concern.

Sitting in the expensive ergonomic chair in front of the monitors was Rowan. Rowan was twenty-six, wearing a faded vintage band tee, and was currently using a heavily modified controller to drive a digital 1986 white Ferrari Testarossa down a hyper-realistic, neon-soaked street.

Because Daniel had pumped an ungodly amount of money into the custom graphics engine, what was happening on the screen looked like absolute witchcraft for 2029.

As the digital car drifted around a wet corner, the tires didn’t just slide on a flat plane; the digital rubber physically deformed against the asphalt. A puddle on the street perfectly reflected the hot pink light of a nearby hotel sign, the water rippling naturally as the car sped past.

”The physics engine is entirely locked,” Rowan said, not taking his eyes off the screen. He hit the left trigger, and the car slammed on the brakes, the digital suspension dipping heavily under the momentum. Rowan clicked the right thumbstick, and the camera panned up, looking at a sprawling, massive digital recreation of 1980s Miami.

”Any invisible walls?” Daniel asked, leaning closer to the screen.

”None,” Rowan confirmed, spinning the camera to show the towering hotels, the beach, and the distant swamp. ”If you can see it, you can walk to it. You can drive to it. You can steal a boat and swim to it. The entire map is rendered dynamically. Every alley, every hotel lobby, every single palm tree. It’s a true one-to-one sandbox.”

Marcus took a slow sip of his coffee, shaking his head. ”I still don’t fully understand what I’m looking at, Dan. It looks exactly like the movie. Literally. The lighting, the textures. It looks like you just filmed Pacino and trapped him inside a computer.”

”That’s exactly the point,” Daniel said.

While the rest of the gaming world was entirely content playing linear, straight-line video games where players moved from point A to point B through tight corridors and fake, painted backgrounds, Daniel had been quietly poaching the most brilliant, unhinged programmers and engine builders from across the globe. He stuck them in this Culver City bunker with a blank check and a singular vision: Build a living world, not a hallway.

”We built the sandbox,” Daniel said, tapping the edge of the monitor. ”The city is alive. The NPCs have actual daily routines. They go to work, they go to the clubs, they get into fights. The weather system is dynamic. But right now, it’s just a really pretty, empty playground. Rowan, how’s the integration going?”

Rowan let go of the controller and spun his chair around to face them. He looked exhausted but completely wired.

”We’re ready to start putting the soul into it,” Rowan said, pulling up a massive digital flowchart on his secondary monitor. ”The narrative team you gave me has mapped out the mission structures. We’re getting ready to implement the shooting mechanics, the cartel territory systems, the actual storyline. But Dan... you gotta understand, nobody has ever done this. A game where you can just ignore the main story, steal a helicopter, and crash it into a yacht just because you feel like it? The industry is going to have a collective stroke. Consoles aren’t supposed to be able to handle this much freedom.”

”Let them have a stroke,” Daniel smiled. He looked over at Marcus. ”Which brings us to the actual purpose of this meeting.”

Marcus set his coffee down on a server rack, instantly shifting into executive mode.

”Corporate structuring,” Marcus said. ”We’ve been funding this out of the Miller Studios R&D budget for over eight months now. The burn rate is astronomical, Dan. These servers, the sheer volume of coding talent... it’s expensive. We need to decide what this entity actually is. Does it stay a weird, secret project tied down to the movie studio, or do we spin it off?”

Daniel looked back at the screen. The neon lights of the digital city were blinking in the simulated rain.

The gaming industry in this world was massive, generating billions of dollars, but it was creatively stagnant when it came to sandboxes. If he dropped an open-world crime simulator with complete player freedom and 2029 photorealistic graphics, it wouldn’t just be a hit. It would completely obliterate the market and rewrite global entertainment overnight.

”We spin it off,” Daniel decided. ”Register a new company tomorrow morning. Call it Miller Interactive. It stays entirely owned by me, but it operates as an independent studio. It gets its own HR department, its own marketing budget, its own executive board.”

Daniel looked back down at Rowan.

”Rowan, you’re officially the lead director of Miller Interactive,” Daniel told him. ”I want a timeline for a playable alpha build.”

Rowan blinked, clearly overwhelmed by the massive promotion, but his ambition immediately overrode his nerves. ”Give me eight months. If we’re officially out of the shadows, I can hire the extra animators I need to get the combat feeling heavy and visceral.”

”You have six,” Daniel told him flatly. ”I want to tease this game globally by the time the Vice City movie hits the streaming platforms next year. I want the synergy to hit them like a freight train.”

”Six it is, we do have a stupidly large team.” Rowan swallowed hard, immediately turning back to his keyboards.

Daniel and Marcus walked out of the freezing server room and into the warm, carpeted hallway of the Culver City building.

”You’re an absolute maniac,” Marcus said, loosening his tie as they walked toward the private elevator. ”We just dropped a two hundred and twenty million dollar R-rated mob movie, we have Leavesden getting prepped for a billion-dollar wizard franchise, and you’re casually launching a massive video game company on a Tuesday.”

”The movie built the hype,” Daniel said calmly, pressing the elevator button. ”The game will cash in on it for the next decade. Have you seen the online tracking for the movie this morning?”

”I don’t need to look at the analytics,” Marcus laughed. ”I can just look out my car window. Every single person in this city is talking about it.”

Marcus wasn’t exaggerating.

Vice City had been out in theaters for exactly five days, and it had completely taken over the cultural zeitgeist. It was a massive, violent, beautiful phenomenon.

Two thousand miles away, on the other side of the country, the suffocating July humidity was pressing down hard on Coral Gables, Florida.

Arthur pushed the heavy glass door of the local AMC multiplex open, stepping out of the blistering afternoon sun and into the freezing, over-air-conditioned lobby.

Arthur was seventy-two years old. He wore a faded guayabera shirt, khaki slacks, and thick orthotic shoes. He had a severe, permanent limp in his left leg—a parting gift from a jagged bullet fragment he caught during a botched raid in 1982. He was a retired Miami-Dade narcotics detective. He had spent the absolute prime of his life kicking down doors in the very worst, bloodiest parts of the city during the peak of the cocaine wars.

He hadn’t been to a movie theater since The Fugitive came out in the nineties. He didn’t care about men in spandex or CGI aliens. But he had seen the massive billboard for Vice City on his drive to the pharmacy earlier that week. Something about the specific, sickly-sweet shade of pink neon they used on the poster had dragged a memory out of the dark, locked backrooms of his brain.

He walked up to the kiosk and bought a ticket for the 2:15 PM matinee. He also bought a small, overpriced popcorn, completely ignoring the fact that he had a silver flask of black coffee mixed with a heavy splash of dark rum tucked securely into his waistband.

He walked into Theater 4. It was mostly empty, just a few other retirees escaping the heat and a couple of teenagers skipping summer school in the front row. Then it got swarmed by people out of nowhere.

Arthur slowly lowered himself into a seat in the very back row, wincing as his bad knee popped loudly in the quiet auditorium. He unscrewed his flask, took a burning sip, and waited for the lights to go down.

When the movie started, Arthur didn’t pay attention to the plot. He didn’t care about the cinematic pacing, the three-act structure, or the character arcs.

He was looking at the texture.

The heavy synth music pounded through the theater speakers, and Arthur actually felt his chest tighten.

The screen showed the humid, neon-lit streets of 1980s Miami. It wasn’t the glossy, romanticized, tourist-friendly version of the city that most Hollywood movies tried to sell to the masses. It was filthy. It looked like the city Arthur remembered—a beautiful place rotting from the inside out.

Arthur stared at the massive screen as Al Pacino stepped out of the white Ferrari.

Pacino didn’t look like a famous actor playing a mobster. He had this specific, dead-eyed, twitchy stillness. It was the exact same sociopathic calm Arthur used to see in the eyes of the high-level hitters he used to cuff to the radiators in the precinct holding cells. The guys who had done so much blow and killed so many people that the lights were on, but nobody human was home anymore.

When Steve Buscemi’s character started sweating completely through his expensive pastel suit, wiping his nose frantically and jumping at shadows, Arthur let out a low, raspy chuckle. He had interviewed a dozen high-priced defense attorneys who looked exactly like that in 1984. Greasy, terrified, and constantly vibrating.

The movie kept going, and Arthur completely stopped eating his popcorn.

He watched the chaotic shootout in the nightclub. He watched the blood spray thick and dark against the crushed velvet walls. He smelled the cheap body spray of the teenager sitting three rows ahead of him, but his brain was aggressively filling in the phantom smells of cordite, stale beer, and copper blood.

The movie wasn’t glorifying the cartel lifestyle. It was displaying it for exactly what it was—a beautiful, neon-lit meat grinder that chewed people up and spat them out.

When Robert De Niro finally appeared on screen, sitting up north in the freezing cold, pulling the strings with a quiet nod, Arthur nodded slowly in the dark. That was exactly how it always worked. The young guys in Miami did all the bleeding and dying, and the quiet old men in New York collected the heavy envelopes.

The climax hit. The betrayal on the marble staircase. The absolute, deafening destruction of the mansion.

Arthur watched Pacino stand entirely alone at the end, his pristine shirt covered in dirt and blood, his empire secured but his soul completely, irreversibly gone.

The screen cut to black. The hot pink letters flashed. The heavy synth music swelled one final time.

The teenagers in the front row stood up immediately and started talking loudly, completely hyped up by the sheer volume of the action.

Arthur didn’t move.

He just sat there in the dark, his calloused hands resting on his knees. He felt incredibly heavy. He felt the crushing weight of the partners he had buried in the 80s. He felt the ghosts of the kids they couldn’t save from the crossfire.

The house lights slowly faded up. A kid wearing an AMC polo walked in holding a broom, looking bored.

Arthur took one last, long sip from his flask, capped it, and slowly forced himself up out of the chair. His knee ached terribly.

He walked down the carpeted aisle, his orthotic shoes squeaking slightly. He pushed open the heavy theater doors and walked through the brightly lit lobby.

As he passed the ticket podium, the teenage kid tearing tickets looked up from his phone. ”Have a good one, sir.”

Arthur stopped. He turned and looked at the massive Vice City movie poster hanging in the backlit frame on the wall.

”The kid who made this,” Arthur muttered, his voice raspy from the rum and two hours of absolute silence.

”Excuse me?” the ticket kid asked, pulling one of his earbuds out.

”The director,” Arthur said, pointing a crooked, arthritic finger at Daniel Miller’s name printed at the bottom of the poster. ”He must’ve been there.”

”Oh, uh, I think he’s from California, man,” the kid said awkwardly, wanting to go back to his phone.

”No,” Arthur shook his head slowly, his eyes still locked on the glowing neon pink letters. ”I don’t know how, but he was there.”

Arthur pushed the heavy glass doors open and walked out into the blinding, suffocating heat of the Florida sun, leaving the neon ghosts behind him in the dark.

While Arthur was dealing with ghosts in Miami, the rest of the world was dealing with the digital aftershocks of the biggest R-rated movie in history.

The cultural footprint of Vice City was massive, spanning from high-brow literary magazines to the grimiest corners of the internet.

The New Yorker published a five-page spread titled: ”The Hyper-Realist Nihilism of Daniel Miller.” The author argued that Vice City wasn’t just a mobster movie, but a ”visceral, spatial experience,” highly praising the fact that the movie never once tried to moralize the violence or hold the audience’s hand.

But the real, unfiltered opinions were happening on Reddit. The r/MillerStudios subreddit had gained a hundred thousand new subscribers over the weekend, and the main discussion thread was absolute chaos.

u/xX_cinema_freak_Xx: bro pacino is deadass a menace. the scene where he just stares at foxx on the stairs?? no screaming, no crying, just pure psycho energy. stg if i see another goofy mob movie after this imma puke. we need more of this raw shit.

u/killa_cam_99: nah fr jamie foxx was sliding on this role. when he pulled up in the white suit i knew someone was dying today.

u/MovieBuff88: Can we talk about the scene where Buscemi is freaking out in the office? The way he kept wiping his nose and looking at the blinds like the cops were outside... I was actually getting second hand anxiety watching him. dude is a legend.

u/DarkRoomVibes: ive watched this movie three times just for the salma hayek scenes tbh. the way she looks at the camera when she puts the gun on the table? diabolical. id hand over my bank account and my social security number in three seconds if she asked. shes mother fr.

u/CinemaSins_Hater: De Niro literally had like ten minutes of screen time and he still felt like the scariest guy in the room. Just sitting up there in the snow.

Over on a massive, dedicated gaming forum, a completely random user made a post that would eventually age like absolute prophecy.

User @LeakerX_99: Title: Vice City is begging to be a game.

”I’m telling you guys, look at the cinematography. The way the camera follows the Ferrari from behind during the chase? That’s not a standard movie choice. That’s literally a 3rd-person camera angle. The whole movie feels like an open world waiting to happen. If Miller Studios doesn’t announce a ’Vice City’ open-world sandbox game by 2030, they are leaving billions on the table. Imagine driving through that neon in 8K.”

User @Pixel_Trash: ”bro u smoking crack lol. consoles would literally melt trying to render a whole city like that without loading screens. u cant just have a game where u walk into a club and shoot it up whenever u want, the AI would break. sandbox games are called sandbox for a reason. There’s a limit to the shit it can handle. Right? Or am I talking outta my ass?”

User @LeakerX_99: ”i know i know, a man can dream smh. but just imagine the freedom.”

And of course, Twitter was currently being held hostage by the ”Miller’s Muses.”

They didn’t care about the cinematography, the acting, or the synth music. They cared about the premiere red carpet photos that had hit Getty Images.

@Muse097: did yall see daniel at the premiere?? omfg 🥵 man in a tailored black suit with the top buttons undone is doing terrible things to my mental health today.

@DirectorWife: he is so handsome it actually makes me angry??? like why is the director outshining half of hollywood’s leading men. florence baby im sorry but fight me rn in a denny’s parking lot.

@IndieDarling: the way he holds himself. he just looks so expensive. he literally looks like he owns the entire studio. (wait he does). im putting that picture of him stepping out of the town car on my ceiling.

Later that same night, Daniel was sitting on the massive, custom-built sectional sofa in his Bel Air living room, an iPad resting on his knees.

Florence was curled up against his left side, fast asleep. She was wearing one of his oversized t-shirts, her head resting heavily on his chest while a terrible, trashy reality TV show played at a low volume on the massive flat screen.

Margot was sitting cross-legged on the other end of the couch, wearing silk pajamas, aggressively digging through a pint of expensive pistachio ice cream with a silver spoon.

Daniel was scrolling through the Twitter reactions, reading the unhinged comments from his fanclub. He let out a quiet, amused snort, locking the iPad screen and tossing it onto the glass coffee table.

”Stop smiling at your phone,” Margot called out, pointing her spoon at him. ”You look smug. It’s really annoying.”

”I am smug,” Daniel whispered, wrapping an arm around Florence’s shoulders so she wouldn’t wake up. ”The movie is an absolute monster. It’s breaking records.”

”Yeah, yeah, you’re a visionary genius, we get it,” Margot teased, rolling her eyes affectionately. She dug the spoon back into the carton. ”Enjoy the victory lap while it lasts, boss. When do we actually have to start packing for London again? You know you ain’t leaving us right? I need to know if I have time to go to Rodeo Drive and buy more coats. Florence told me it’s basically winter over there all year.”

”Soon,” Daniel said.

He leaned his head back against the couch cushions, looking up at the high ceiling of his living room. The adrenaline of the Vice City release was finally starting to fade, replaced by a deep, quiet focus.

Miami was done. The game studio was up and running. The neon chapter was officially on a halt.

”We put a cork in it this week,” Daniel said softly, staring out the massive glass windows toward the dark Los Angeles hills. ”I have a few final meetings at the Burbank lot, and then we’re out of here. It’s time to go build a magic castle. Man, am I excited.”

Margot just looked at him as he talked as if she had fallen in love all over again. Her man’s passion was contagious.
