The Maker: Hollywood

The handle of the shovel was smooth, worn down by three years of blisters that had eventually turned into callouses. Daniel leaned against the porch railing, his chest rising and falling in the rhythmic cadence of someone who had spent the morning working the land rather than a camera.

The air in the Sierra foothills was crisp, smelling of damp earth and woodsmoke. For a long time, Daniel just watched the mist roll off the valley. This was his life now—or it had been. In the hallway behind him, the grandfather clock ticked against a silence that had become permanent two weeks ago. His grandmother was gone, and with her, the last reason to stay in this sanctuary of exile.

He walked inside, his boots clumping on the hardwood. The house felt smaller with the furniture draped in white sheets. He stopped at the kitchen table, where a single, coffee-stained sketchbook lay. He flipped it open.

The sketches were three years old. They were character designs for The Weaver’s Loom, an animated short that was supposed to be his ticket into the industry. He had pioneered a rendering technique that made 3D models look like living, breathing oil paintings—every brushstroke calculated, every shadow textured with a simulated canvas grain.

He could still feel the phantom ache in his eyes from the night it all fell apart. He’d been working eighteen-hour days in the UCLA labs, his immune system crumbling under the weight of caffeine and ambition. He’d caught a brutal strain of the flu, the kind that turned the world into a feverish blur. Julian, his roommate and supposed best friend, had walked him to the campus clinic, promising to keep the render farm running.

”Don’t worry about the files, Dan,” Julian had said, his voice steady and supportive. ”I’ll babysit the servers. Just sleep.”

Daniel had slept. He’d woken up forty-eight hours later to a flurry of notifications. Julian hadn’t just babysat the servers; he’d cloned the master drives, wiped the metadata, and re-stamped the project with his own digital signature. He’d ”premiered” a five-minute clip to the faculty as a surprise teaser for his own thesis.

By the time Daniel could even stand up straight, the lie was concrete. When he tried to show his own files, they were corrupted—Julian had seen to that. The department heads, men Daniel had looked up to, didn’t want a scandal. They saw Julian’s polished, ”oil-painted” masterpiece and then looked at the frantic, half-textured backup Daniel scrambled to submit at the last minute.

The grade he received wasn’t just low; it was an insult. But the social death was worse. Julian was charming, and Daniel… Daniel had been the ”prodigy.” People didn’t just believe Julian because of the files; they believed him because they wanted to. They were tired of Daniel’s perfection. They were tired of the ”Golden Boy” always setting the curve. It was easier to believe he was a fraud than to accept he was better than them.

Daniel closed the sketchbook. He didn’t feel the sharp, hot rage he’d felt three years ago. It had cooled into something denser. Something heavy.

’System,’ he thought, almost out of habit.

A soft, golden light pulsed behind his eyelids. A screen, visible only to him, manifested in the dim kitchen.

The System had appeared on his first night in the mountains. He’d thought it was a fever dream at first—a hallucination born of trauma and the flu. But it was real. It was a window into a parallel world called ”Earth-199,” a place where people like Akira Kurosawa, Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan and Steven Spielberg had defined the human experience through a lens.

For three years, while he looked after his grandmother, Daniel had been a student of a world that didn’t exist. He’d watched movies that made him weep, movies that made him question his own soul, and movies that were so technically brilliant they made his UCLA education look like finger-painting. He wasn’t just a director anymore; he was a curator of an entire planet’s creative heritage.

The sound of a car horn—a loud, obnoxious, familiar honk—broke his reverie.

Daniel grabbed his suitcase and walked out onto the porch. A rusted-out sedan was idling in the driveway, blue smoke puffing from the exhaust. Tom Wiley hopped out, looking exactly the same as he had three years ago: messy hair, a shirt that needed ironing, and a grin that was far too bright for the early morning.

”Look at you!” Tom shouted, jogging up the steps. ”You look like a lumberjack. If I’d known you were growing muscle, I would’ve come up here months ago to help move my couch.”

Daniel felt a genuine weight lift from his chest. ”It’s good to see you, Tom.”

”Yeah, yeah. Save the Hallmark moment for the car. We need to beat the traffic,” Tom said, but he stopped, his eyes softening as he looked at the quiet house. ”You okay? I mean, really?”

”I’m fine,” Daniel said, and for the first time, he meant it. ”She was happy, Tom. She went out listening to the radio. I’m just ready to… not be here anymore.”

”Fair enough,” Tom said, grabbing one of the smaller bags. ”LA is a mess right now, by the way. Julian’s latest project just got nominated for a Guild award. It’s all anyone talks about. The guy’s basically a God at the Roosevelt Hotel bar.”

”I’m not worried about Julian,” Daniel said as they walked to the car.

”You should be a little worried,” Tom countered as they pulled out of the gravel driveway. ”He’s got the keys to the city. If he finds out you’re back, he’ll try to bury you again. He’s got that ’I’m the victim’ routine down to a science.”

Daniel leaned his head against the window, watching the pine trees begin to thin as they descended the mountain. ”He can try. But he’s playing a game with rules I’ve already moved past.”

”Oof. Okay, Mystery Man,” Tom chuckled. ”So, what’s the move? You want me to get you a PA gig on a commercial? I know a guy who’s shooting a detergent ad in Burbank.”

”No,” Daniel said. ”I’m not assisting anyone.”

Tom glanced at him, concerned. ”Dan, I love you, man, but you’ve been out of the loop for three years. You have no reel, a bad graduation record, and zero industry juice. You can’t just walk onto a lot.”

”I’m not walking onto a lot,” Daniel replied. He opened his backpack and pulled out a notebook. It wasn’t the sketchbook from earlier. This one was filled with meticulous shot lists and prop requirements. ”I’ve been thinking about what makes people tick, Tom. For three years, that’s all I’ve done. I’ve been studying stories that haven’t been told here. Stories that don’t need a million dollars to feel like a million dollars.”

”What are you talking about?”

”I have a script,” Daniel said. ”It’s simple. It’s raw. And we’re going to shoot it with whatever we can scrape together.”

Tom was quiet for a long moment as they hit the freeway. The skyline of Los Angeles appeared in the distance, a sprawling, smog-choked grid of dreams and nightmares.

”You really think you can do it?” Tom asked, his voice losing its playful edge. ”Without the labs? Without the studio backing? Just… us?”

Daniel looked at the System screen flickering in the corner of his eye. He thought of the thousands of ”Earth” directors who had started with nothing but a 16mm camera and a dream. He thought of his own talent, honed by his grandmother’s quiet wisdom and the Library’s infinite lessons.

”I don’t think I can do it, Tom,” Daniel said, his voice grounded and steady. ”I know I can. Julian stole a film, but he didn’t steal the filmmaker. He’s about to find out there’s a big difference.”

As the car crossed the city limits, a new notification pinged in Daniel’s mind.

Daniel closed his eyes and let the city’s noise wash over him. He wasn’t the Golden Boy anymore. He was something much more dangerous: a man with nothing to lose and an entire world’s worth of stories to tell.
