Transmigration: The Evil Mother-In-Law Is Actually Innocent!

Chapter 1434: Chapter 1344: Requesting for an Imperial Decree

In the capital, this time when Rongchuan encountered trouble, Zhou Shuren did not keep it from his wife. As soon as he left the Palace, he had Jin Yan send a message back home, leaving Jin Yan at the residence. If anything went wrong with his wife, Jin Yan would notify him immediately.

At the Ministry of Revenue, Zhou Shuren breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing Jin Yan’s report. His wife had a premonition and after analysis and hints, she was already mentally prepared. Now both Rongchuan and his wife were safe, and his wife just looked pale but did not ask for a doctor.

Zhou Shuren gestured for Jin Yan to leave, as he had to continue with his busy tasks. The situation in Dongbei was already tense, poised on the brink of war, and everyone in the Ministry of Revenue was on edge.

At the Zhou family’s residence, Zhulan’s complexion had already returned to normal, but worrying now was of no use.

Lady Li and others were also startled, and Lady Li comforted, ”Rongchuan and Xue Han will definitely return to the capital safely. Mother need not worry too much.”

The other daughters-in-law could not clearly see the situation like Lady Li; Zhao’s family and Su Xuan remained calm, clearly considering the predicament of Rongchuan and Xue Han. The journey back to the capital was not easy.

Zhulan looked at her daughters-in-law, ”War has already broken out in Dongbei, and the future will be unstable. You must manage the servants in each of your chambers well, and also tell the children not to go out on the streets unnecessarily.”

Who knows if someone will create chaos in the capital; they are capable of assassinating Rongchuan, so we must be vigilant. If we get caught up in the chaos, it would simply be our own misfortune.

Lady Li and the others felt anxious in their hearts, ”Yes.”

Lady Li was the oldest among the daughters-in-law. She and Zhao’s family had gone through wars, whereas Su Xuan was born at the tail end of a conflict and had no understanding or memories of it.

Lady Li and Zhao’s family knew the dangers that came with warfare.

Lady Li added, ”He Shu and Wu Ning are in Dongbei, we do not know how they are faring.”

Zhao’s family replied, ”We also do not know if it will affect our hometown.”

Zhulan was not worried about the war in Dongbei; she knew as much about the Emperor’s actions as Shuren did. The Emperor had planned a grand strategy, and despite the unexpected disaster, they had absolute military power. Military strength determined success or failure, and no one could escape the bombardment of heavy cannons.

Zhulan said, ”You must believe in the nation’s strength; those who initiate war will pay the price.”

The tone of Zhulan’s voice was steady and firm, instilling confidence in the daughters-in-law. The power of the Imperial court was there for all to see; Lady Li and others gradually felt at ease.

Inside the Palace, the Retired Emperor looked at Prince Liang, ”Are you aware of your health condition?”

Injured severely during the palace upheaval, Prince Liang had recovered physically, but his constitution was weakened, feeling discomfort with every change in the weather. With such a physique, how could he lead troops into battle?

Prince Liang knelt upright, ”Father Emperor, I am clear about my own health conditions.”

The Retired Emperor thought to himself that no one knew Prince Liang’s health better than the Emperor, not even him, his father. He sighed in his heart, wondering why Prince Liang would take such a risk when the hazards were clear to everyone.

Prince Liang continued, ”The royal family needs someone to lead the army. Originally, Prince Qin would have been the most suitable, but he is injured. Therefore, I took the initiative to request the decree. Son asks for Father Emperor’s approval.”

When he heard that Prince Qin was injured, he knew it was an opportunity for Prince Liang Residence. If they missed this chance, once the Empress encountered trouble, Prince Liang Residence would only be passively bearing the Emperor’s grudge.

He had considered all factors, except for the Empress getting pregnant again. Fortunately, there was still an opportunity.

The fact that the Emperor did not approve this morning meant that he had agreed to his request. He understood his elder brother too well. That’s why he actively sought the Retired Emperor’s consent, taking initiative to request to lead the troops. If anything happened, it would be his own problem, and not because the Emperor forced him to lead the army.

The Retired Emperor gestured for Prince Liang to rise, but Prince Liang did not move. Father and son looked eye to eye; the Retired Emperor closed his eyes, ”No matter what I say now, you won’t listen.”

The eldest son had firmly secured the throne, showing his ambitious and aggressive side, while the other sons... Prince Qi can be considered good, Prince Chu’s life will stay as it is, and only Prince Liang behaves as if he is under house arrest. Even so, Prince Liang still fears retribution. They are all fathers; Prince Liang risks everything for the sake of his own lineage.

In the end, the Retired Emperor waved his hand, ”You may leave.”

Prince Liang kowtowed deeply, then staggered to his feet and left.

The Retired Emperor watched his son’s retreating figure, all his sons were capable, each could inherit the empire, but there is only one throne.

Zhou family, news of Prince Qin’s assassination spread quickly throughout the capital, and Xue Mei, having heard the news, went back to her maternal home and finally felt at ease knowing her sister was safe.

Xue Mei then asked anxiously, ”Mother, if there is a war in Dongbei, will it reach Zhou family village?”

Zhulan consoled her, ”The troops are just gathering for now. If there is a large-scale war, and you’re worried, you can have Jiang Miu and his wife come back to the capital.”

Xue Mei sighed with relief in her heart, right, she could let her daughter come back to the capital.

Zhulan said, ”Take good care of yourself.”

This year, her eldest daughter had lost a lot of weight.

Xue Mei promised, ”I will make sure to drink more soup to nourish myself.”

Zhulan thought of her grandson Jiang Zhu, ”And don’t rush the newlyweds to have children either.”

Xue Mei smiled, ”I haven’t pressured them for children. Having children is a matter of fate, and when fate arrives, they will naturally come. My mother-in-law has been a bit anxious and mentioned it a few times, but I’ve talked to her about it, and she hasn’t brought it up again.”

Zhulan, ”It’s understandable that your mother-in-law is anxious.”

Jiang Zhu did marry late; it’s natural for her to be eager to see a great-grandson.

In the temple, Rongchuan supported his wife as they walked around. They had left their mountain village and moved to the temple to continue recuperating from their injuries.

Rongchuan looked at his wife’s belly, ”I’m sorry to put you and the child through this.”

They had to leave the mountain village just as she was able to get up and move around, which pained him to watch, but for safety’s sake, they had no choice but to leave.

Xue Han took a few steps and then couldn’t go on, indicating to go back, ”I should be the one apologizing. If not for my being a burden, you could have returned to the capital sooner.”

”You shouldn’t talk like that; we are one, husband and wife. Don’t talk about being a burden or not. Given the situation, it doesn’t make much difference whether I return early or late.”

He was seriously injured and no longer able to lead the troops into battle. All that mattered was that he and his wife could safely return to the capital.

Xue Han had seen the bandages all over her husband, who didn’t dare to exert force with his arm and could only support her with one hand. She refused his help, but he just watched her, clearly understanding that seeing her lying in a pool of blood had frightened him deeply. He couldn’t feel at ease without holding her hand, feeling restless unless he was touching her.

Xue Han asked, ”How long will we stay in the temple?”

Rongchuan said, ”At least three days.”

His wife’s pregnancy was still not stable, and his injuries required rest. Although he could walk around, thanks to his youth and recovery abilities, his wounds hadn’t healed much.

Xue Han touched her belly, ”There won’t be any danger, right?”

Rongchuan shook his head, ”This temple is controlled by loyal retainers; it is relatively safe here.”

Xue Han was stunned, ”There are loyal retainers here too?”

Rongchuan, with a hint of a smile, said, ”Yes, temples are also good places to gather information.”

Many ladies and mistresses liked to worship Buddha and would often ask the master some questions, from which a lot of information could be gleaned.

Xue Han blinked, ”Doesn’t that mean the monks are not sincere in their monkhood?”

Rongchuan, ”They’re just collecting information. Alright, let’s not talk about this anymore. We should go back and take our medicine.”
