Transmigration: The Evil Mother-In-Law Is Actually Innocent!

Chapter 1289: Chapter 1289: Grandpa’s Love

The day for Zhulan and Zhou Shuren to visit the Ran family had arrived; Zhou’s parents followed behind them, with Lady Li still in the mood to tug at her son’s sleeve.

Lady Li quietly asked, ”Son, are you nervous?”

Mingyun, seeing his father also slow down, could not help but feel resigned. They had already entered the Ran Residence. If he didn’t answer, his mother wouldn’t let go, so he could only softly reply, ”No.”

Lady Li carefully looked at her son’s unchanging face and, feeling disappointed, let go of her son’s sleeve and quickly caught up with her husband.

Mingyun certainly wouldn’t tell the truth; he was indeed a little nervous. Today was the day to set the marriage arrangement, and thinking about getting married made his ears redden slightly.

Zhulan’s party had already entered the house, and a member of the Qi Clan smiled and said, ”Ran Wan’s father couldn’t make it back, so we, the old couple, will make the decisions.”

Zhulan, sitting beside the Qi Clan member, took the opportunity to ask, ”Are Ran Wan’s father and mother doing well abroad?”

The clan member beamed with happiness; her youngest son, ”They are very well. Ran Wan’s father owes his success today to your help, too.”

Zhulan smiled with her eyes curved, ”Of course, once the date is set, after Mingyun and Ran Wan get married, our two families will be officially related by marriage.”

The Qi Clan member, looking at Mingyun who was chatting on the other side, felt increasingly satisfied with her future grandson-in-law. In the capital, there was a ranking for sons-in-law, and Zhou Mingyun would definitely be placed within the top ten.

Zhou Shuren was also chatting with his son but not about Ran Zheng’s son; the conversation centered around Chang Yi instead.

Ran Zheng said, ”My eldest son is responsible for the items to be carried on the envoy mission; I heard that the date for the envoy mission has been set.”

Zhou Shuren hummed, ”The envoy mission sets out in half a month.”

Ran Zheng, ”Is Chang Yi’s preparation complete?”

Facing Ran Zheng, Zhou Shuren was more than willing to chat further, ”The second one in our family is the most meticulous; he doesn’t need me to worry about him.”

Ran Zheng smiled, ”When he returns, you won’t need to worry about him anymore.”

Zhou Shuren revealed a sincere smile, ”Hmm.”

Setting the marriage went smoothly, but compared to the Ran family’s wish to have the wedding this year, after privately consulting her eldest grandson, Zhulan learned that her eldest grandson wished to get married in the spring of next year.

The wedding date was ultimately set for after the next year’s spring plowing, allowing Ran Wan to stay at home for one more year.

With the date formally set, Mingyun brought Ran Wan a gift. This gift was bought with the silver he had saved over the years; he didn’t use the gift prepared by his parents, instead, a piece of fine Warm Jade.

Zhulan didn’t know what gift her eldest grandson had prepared, but upon seeing the Warm Jade, she couldn’t help but laugh. Her grandson truly cared for Ran Wan. Warm Jade wasn’t cheap; even though the piece wasn’t big, with its fine quality, it would start from five hundred taels.

The Qi Clan member also laughed upon seeing it, without a single worry for their future with no third party involved, the life of the young couple would surely be beautiful and harmonious.

Ran Wan also prepared a sachet for Mingyun.

On the way back, Zhou Shuren secretly asked his eldest grandson, ”Is all the silver you’ve saved over the years gone?”

Mingyun touched his nose; indeed, it was gone, but not all had been spent on the Warm Jade. He had spent quite a bit on gifts for the family during this trip.

Zhou Shuren patted his eldest grandson’s shoulder and secretly untied the sachet, lowering his voice, ”This is a little bit of silver I’ve saved this year. You take it all.”

Knowing his grandson’s nature, he would never reach out to ask for money from his parents. His grandson was growing up and needed more silver on hand for social obligations.

Mingyun was stunned. He wondered why his grandfather insisted on taking the carriage back with him; it turned out he wanted to secretly give him silver. This feeling wasn’t too bad. However, ”Grandpa, it wasn’t easy for you to save this silver.”

Uncle has always kept an eye on Grandpa’s silver!

Zhou Shuren lightly coughed, ”If I tell you to hold onto it, then hold onto it. There, I’ve given it all to you.”

Mingyun, looking at the purse in his hand, chuckled, clearly feeling that his grandfather was just like every other grandfather in the world.

Zhulan sat in the carriage with the elder couple, Lady Li curiously inquired, ”Mother, what does father want to discuss with Mingyun?”

Zhulan was also puzzled; it was the first time the old man didn’t ride in the same carriage as her, ”He probably has something to tell him.”

Lady Li wanted to ask more, but Zhou Elder pulled her hand, and Lady Li closed her mouth.

When they got home, Zhulan understood the reason for the one carriage, ”You gave it all to Mingyun?”

Zhou Shuren wore a look of a benevolent grandfather, ”That’s right, my eldest grandson is too embarrassed to ask his parents for money, so I, as his grandfather, certainly can’t let him be short of silver.”

Zhulan asked, ”How much silver do you have on you?”

Zhou Shuren stretched out his hand, ”One hundred and seven taels, and a little more.”

Zhulan took out a box, handed over silver notes worth two hundred taels, ”Keep it well.”

Zhou Shuren swiftly pocketed the silver note. Why give it all to the eldest grandson? Because he could exchange it for two hundred taels from his daughter-in-law – this deal was not bad at all. He delightfully accepted the silver.

Mingyun was still unaware of his grandfather’s calculations, deeply moved by the generosity for the one hundred-plus taels of silver.

The next day, Chang Yi no longer had to attend to his duties at the Ministry of Rites, with the remaining half-month essentially being a vacation, allowing the officials going on the diplomatic mission to spend quality time with their families.

Chang Yi took a leave for his son and the family planned to spend a few days at the country estate.

This time, none of the children from the other branches were brought along, only the second wife’s family.

Ever since finding out that Chang Yi would be going abroad for several years, Madame Zhao, no matter how well she masked her feelings, couldn’t hide her deep sense of desolation, which could be felt by Zhulan and others.

At the beginning, the little ones like Yu Die had no idea, but now they understood, and the playful Yu Die clung to her father more than ever.

Early in the morning, the second wife’s family packed up, boarded the carriage and left, with Yu Yi and Yu Wen seeing them off.

Yu Yi returned to the main courtyard, ”Grandmother, must Second Uncle really travel abroad?”

Zhulan nodded, ”Yes, your Second Uncle wants to build up his own family home, that’s why he’s working so hard.”

Yu Yi, the obedient child, nodded in understanding, thinking of her father who also supported the third branch of the family.

Zhulan watched Yu Yi, who was obediently teaching Yu Jiao to read. Among the granddaughters, Yu Yi was the most normal one, such an obedient child.

Zhulan now had a fondness for handicraft, especially now that she was getting more skilled with glass technology. The glass bottles made were very good, and Zhulan picked fresh flowers, dried them, and treated them with preservatives. She placed the flowers and leaves into the bottles, which when crafted, made for beautiful decorations.

At Zhou Mingshan’s home, Madame Wang heard the news that the concubine was sick, ”Call the doctor.”

Madame Wang waited for the maid to leave, her mouth corners brimming with sarcasm; Zhou Mingshan wanted to take the concubine with him, but the concubine didn’t want to go, even using Zhou Mingshan’s method – how ironic.

Zhulan heard the news, ”Quite interesting.”

Zhou Mingshan’s expression must have been quite splendid.

More than splendid, Zhou Mingshan, who had been holed up in his study, kicked over a chair in anger upon hearing the news. He intended to go to the backyard and explode, but to his surprise, the doctor diagnosed a pregnancy pulse.

Madame Wang was also present, looking at the concubine lying on the bed in shock, Madame Wang smiled. This illness was no light matter; to survive, she’d have to drink herbal concoctions, and the child would also likely be frail. And with Zhou Mingshan not returning for several years...

Madame Wang gestured for the doctor to properly treat her, not sparing Zhou Mingshan a glance as she turned and left.
