Transmigration: The Evil Mother-In-Law Is Actually Innocent!

Chapter 934: Chapter 934 Ran Zheng

Wu Ming, ”Godfather, Chang Zhong is very smart. He’s been testing my limits. I had to take action.”

Children’s intuition is sharp, and they’re good at testing boundaries. Having taken care of his younger brother from a young age, he knew it well.

Zhou Shuren, wiping his nose, ”Ahem, you’ll be responsible for Chang Zhong from now on.”

Wu Ming didn’t mention that he’d prepared a ruler for discipline. After thinking it over, he decided to secretly inform his godmother. He had been worried that she might intervene out of sympathy for Chang Zhong, but now it seemed he needed to guard against his godfather instead.

Seeing his wife glance over, Zhou Shuren sat up straight and started talking about the Ministry of Rites again.

Wu Ming, ”....”

He really wanted to laugh. He had been somewhat skeptical about the godfather’s report, but now he believed it!

Time flew by quickly. Zhulan, looking at the puddles in the courtyard, contemplated, ”Time really does fly; it feels like the snow just melted into water yesterday.”

Now, there was no snow to be seen—just water everywhere, and the tree branches were starting to show a hint of green.

Xue Mei also felt it, ”Exactly. My daughter has been in the capital for nearly two months now.”

Zhulan, watching Yu Die and Yu Yi play with grass, asked her daughter, ”Are your in-laws still growing vegetables?”

Xue Mei smiled, ”In the capital, there are many wealthy families. They earned quite a bit of Silver Coin by growing vegetables indoors, and they’re still doing it!”

Having many empty rooms at home, the in-laws hadn’t stopped bustling around. This month, the money for meat and vegetables was all spent by the in-laws, who were now living quite comfortably.

Zhulan asked casually, ”In two days, Wu Ming will get married, followed by Wu Yong. After their weddings, I can finally take a break.”

The Wu family had already decorated the house. She had checked everything several times and even sent Granny Song to stay for a few days to instruct the servants. All of the Wu family’s servants were brought to the capital by Wu Ming, who hadn’t hired anyone new upon arrival, showing his caution.

Xue Mei, looking at her mother, ”Mother, you’ve lost quite a bit of weight these past days.”

Zhulan smiled happily; this was her biggest gain. She had lost a considerable amount of weight and although still chubby, it was within her acceptable range, ”Losing some weight is good. I’ve felt more spirited these days.”

Seeing her mother in good spirits, Xue Mei didn’t say much more, though she actually thought it was better to be a bit plump.

Yu Die and Yu Yi, covered in mud, came running over, holding the grass they found. The grass was not large, just sprouting, and the two young girls were overjoyed, as if they had found a treasure to show off.

Zhulan, looking at the mud on her clothes, pinched her granddaughters’ cheeks, ”You two are getting more and more mischievous, just like boys.”

Yu Die, seeing the stains on her grandmother’s clothes, quickly hid her hands behind her back.

Zhulan wasn’t angry. Yu Die had a frail constitution, and her mother Zhao never got annoyed with her mischievousness; in fact, she was happy to see Yu Die act up like a boy, a sign that she was getting stronger.

As for Yu Yi, she was simply following Yu Die’s lead in mischief.

Zhulan had a maid take the two granddaughters to change their clothes. Although the temperature had risen, the chill was still lingering, and it was fine for the children to play for a while, but not for too long.

Xue Mei supported her mother as they walked back to the house, saying, ”Mother, I just checked on Lady Dong. It seems her time is near.”

Zhulan said, ”I had the Imperial Physician Mr. Liu come and check. Indeed, it should be within these few days.”

”Sister-in-law is very nervous.”

Zhulan sighed, ”It’ll be fine once the baby is born.”

At the Ministry of Revenue, Zhou Shuren and Wong Ju chatted and Zhou Shuren casually asked, ”Is your uncle doing well in Jizhou Province?”

Wong Ju looked relaxed, ”He was demoted directly to County Magistrate, but he has really learned his lesson this time. Although he isn’t very capable, he’s doing quite well in Jizhou.”

Zhou Shuren laughed, ”Still want to return to the capital, don’t you!”

Wong Ju nodded, ”Yes.”

Zhou Shuren did not continue to speak. Wong Ju’s elder brother had left the capital and even wanted to leave his six-year-old granddaughter in the care of the Tao family. Fortunately, Wong Ju wasn’t confused and didn’t agree. All this cousin and cousin business—he had heard his wife talk about it so much that he now remembered it clearly.

Therefore, he generously gave Wong Ju a day off, which touched Wong Ju immensely.

Wong Ju spoke softly, ”The Fifth Prince has been very active lately.”

Zhou Shuren, ”He has always been very active.”

Wong Ju coughed, ”The Third Prince is not right, Prince Chu and Prince Liang have been fighting quite fiercely of late.”

Zhou Shuren stroked his beard, ”You want to ask me if Mr. Ran is going to return to the capital, right!”

Wong Ju chuckled dryly, ”It’s just that the Third Prince, Prince Chu, has been courting the Ran family lately, and I was curious.”

Zhou Shuren huffed, ”I see you’ve gotten used to fishing for information from me.”

Wong Ju guiltily averted his gaze. Who could blame him when Zhou Shuren’s intelligence was so accurate? Right now, Zhou Shuren was exceptionally influential in the capital, with the Emperor summoning him to the palace often.

Zhou Shuren saw right through what Wong Ju was thinking. As if he liked going to the palace, serving the Emperor was like serving a tiger. He was the person least willing to hear any news, least of all chat with the Emperor, feeling that his heart had not been in good shape lately!

Nevertheless, Zhou Shuren gave Wong Ju a reliable piece of news, ”I have received a letter from Ran Zheng.”

He said nothing more, but indeed, the letter from Ran Zheng had indicated his plans to return to the capital.

With the news in hand, Wong Ju could report back to his father, and he sighed inwardly. Zhou Shuren was not doing him a favor—he was honoring a promised face. If he didn’t fulfill his promises in the future, Zhou Shuren would not let him off the hook. He would have to repay what he had received.

This old fox had calculated everything.

Qiu Yan stepped out and saw a skinny man and a fat man together. With the weather warming, Zhou Shuren had slimmed down again, and Qiu Yan remarked to himself how close the two really were.

Two days passed in the blink of an eye. On the day of Wu Ming’s wedding, having no elders or parents, Zhulan and Zhou Shuren served as godparents and sat in the principal positions today.

Zhulan watched the newlyweds pay their respects to heaven and earth and was moved; glad that she and Zhou Shuren were influential enough to provide Wu Ming with a better future and prospects.

Many guests attended the wedding today, mostly because of Zhou Shuren, primarily because of the Emperor.

The Emperor had grown old and didn’t often meet with ministers alone anymore, as every move could affect the court. Only Zhou Shuren, who had no family ties, was summoned to the capital—and not just once or twice. So frequent were the summons, they happened every seven days.

As a result, the Zhou family received an overwhelming number of visiting cards. There were too many people trying to ingratiate themselves, several princes, no, several princes were even more courteous to Zhou Shuren. They would arrange chance meetings, attempting to coax some information from him.

After the wedding ceremony was over, Zhulan didn’t need to worry about the rest. After the meal, she and Zhou Shuren stood up and went home.

The next day, Zhulan and Zhou Shuren met with the newlyweds. After drinking their tea, Zhulan also gave them a gift.

Zhou Shuren left soon after, while Wu Ming, having been granted leave, didn’t hurry to depart and chatted a few words before going to look for Chang Zhong.

Zhulan said to Song Lan, ”If you ever suffer any grievances in the future, tell your godmother. I will help you vent your anger.”

Song Lan blushed, a little embarrassed. Her husband had entrusted all his property to her yesterday, a sign of his trust, which delighted her. With her head bowed, she said, ”My husband is very kind to me.”

Zhulan smiled, ”That’s good. As long as you and your husband are happy, we, the elders, can rest easy.”

Song Lan was content with this marriage. With no meddling in-laws above her, she ruled the rear court of the Wu family, and with her husband having shared all with her, she was in charge of the Wu household.

At noon in the Ministry of Revenue, Zhou Shuren met with Ran Zheng. He was truly surprised, ”You came back to the capital so quickly?”
