Transmigration: The Evil Mother-In-Law Is Actually Innocent!

Chapter 750: Chapter 750 Admit_1

The Wang family, Zhulan, accompanied by Yu Lu, went to the old lady’s courtyard, where the old lady’s personal maidservant said while walking, ”The old lady has been talking about it ever since she received your card; she’s been waiting for today!”

Zhulan thought it was good that she had sent the card over early. As they talked, they arrived at the doorway, where the servant girl parted the bamboo curtains.

Zhulan entered the room with her granddaughter, and the old lady had already started speaking. ”The magpies have been chattering all day; it truly heralded the arrival of an honored guest.”

Zhulan first paid her respects, then smiled and said, ”I cannot assume the title of an honored guest. I presume there is a happy occasion in the residence.”

The old lady smiled, ”You are worthy of it, worthy of it. Please sit down. This must be Yu Lu, right?”

Yu Lu paid her respects again, ”Greetings to the old lady.”

The old lady waved her over, ”Look at this child; I like her just by looking at her. Child, come here, let me have a good look at you.”

Zhulan had already taken a seat. She wasn’t worried about Yu Lu; amongst all her granddaughters, Yu Lu was the most stable.

Yu Lu approached with a smile, and the old lady reached out and took her hand. If it weren’t inappropriate, the old lady’s hand would have touched her face.

Lady Li was satisfied just from looking at her. This child had the look of good fortune, with clear and steady eyes, and a stable character. A daughter-in-law should be stable, and her movements also had an easy grace. Lady Li’s favorable impression deepened.

Today, Zhulan was merely a backdrop; the main focus was Yu Lu. Zhulan watched as Yu Lu responded with composure, feeling proud in her heart. The time and effort she spent on her granddaughters were not in vain; they were all good.

Yu Lu also understood Buddhism. She could settle down and truly delve into the Buddhist scriptures.

The Buddhist scriptures in the main house were thanks to Lady Li, credited to Zhulan. Both Zhulan and Mrs. Tao would bring Lady Li with them when they went to worship Buddha. Although Lady Li’s handwriting was not good, she would let Yu Lu read some Chapters for her to listen to.

Lady Li was even more satisfied. Girls of Yu Lu’s age usually preferred things that are fresh and interesting, rarely calming their minds to study Buddhist scriptures.

Lady Li reflected, ”Understanding a few points from the Buddhist scriptures is beneficial for the future.”

She didn’t grasp it deeply when she was young, but as she aged, she had more realizations. She liked Yu Lu even more, seeing that she could truly comprehend its teachings.

Zhulan would sometimes read as well and nodded with a smile, ”You’re right.”

It was Yu Lu’s first visit to the Wang family since the engagement was set, and the old lady had prepared a gift—a set of jewelry adornments with fiery red gemstones that dazzled Zhulan’s eyes.

Lady Li reminisced, ”This was part of my dowry when I got married. It’s been well-preserved over the years. Today I give it to you. Take good care of it.”

Yu Lu finally became nervous, ”This is too precious.”

She saw clearly. The gemstones were larger than what her grandmother had given her. This was a treasure.

Lady Li had actually prepared two gifts. This one was given because she approved; the other was a pair of bracelets. Bracelets were not as precious as the adornments, ”It will be yours sooner or later.”

This marriage alliance was a sure thing. Although her husband didn’t discuss political matters with her, after so many years, she could read his heart. He was very fond of Zhou Shuren.

Zhulan did not say anything; it was Yu Lu’s turn to reply at this moment.

Yu Lu’s cheeks were a bit red, but she still thanked the old lady graciously, ”Thank you, old lady.”

Lady Li’s eyes may have been a bit blurry, but her heart was exceptionally bright. Yu Lu, without seeking Mrs. Yang’s glance for approval, accepted the gift generously. Not only was the girl stable, but she was also decisive. Lady Li’s smile deepened, ”Good, good.”

Zhulan also smiled. Who wouldn’t want their granddaughter to do well in her future marital home?

Back home, Zhulan was a bit tired. She had been visiting for four hours, constantly sitting, and maintaining proper posture the entire time, keeping her waist and back straight. After changing clothes, Zhulan lay down.

Song, the maid, started to massage her. After a bit, Zhulan relaxed, ”I haven’t been out in quite a few days, and today at the Wang’s, I found sitting continuously a bit much.”

Song, the maid, was silent. At home, the mistress would sit casually, leaning when tired, or lying down when it really came down to it. Now, having sat for such a long time, it was naturally unbearable.

Zhulan, yawning and feeling sleepy, motioned for Song to go out. Zhulan quickly dozed off in a daze.

At the Ministry of Revenue, Zhou Shuren was also busy. The tax increase was not his responsibility, but the library needed his attention. He was leading a group to categorize the books.

”Grand Master of Writing, the Chief of Staff invites you to come over.”

Zhou Shuren said to the official from the Department of Punishment, ”I leave this to you to watch over.”

The official was excited, ”Yes.”

He could sense that Zhou had a good impression of him. Now that Zhou was well-established in the Ministry of Revenue and he had caught the eye of the master, the future looked promising. He had to pay close attention.

Zhou Shuren entered the room and immediately saw the Second Prince. He paid his respects, ”Greetings to the Second Prince.”

The Second Prince smiled outwardly but inwardly wanted to curse. He truly did not want to deal with Zhou Shuren, that sly fox, especially after knowing the reasons behind the tax increase and the establishment of the library. Zhou Shuren had a truly dark heart, ”I heard from Xiao, the Grand Master of Writing, that you were tasked with the library matters.”

Zhou Shuren wasn’t surprised by the Second Prince’s visit. Even a nominal position at the library could garner favor among scholars, ”Yes.”

The Second Prince looked at Xiao Qing, then back at Zhou Shuren, and felt a headache coming on. He had been keeping watch on Zhou Shuren, who entered the palace—he knew it all. The news of the tax increase and the library, the Emperor had told them plainly, even explaining the deep intentions outright, leaving no chance for them to find out themselves!

The few Princes under them also had merchants at sea. The treasures of the Ministry of Revenue were easy to handle; at least there was a six-month exemption from the increase, although it would cost them some silver, it was bearable.

But the library, even though they knew they had to pay a hefty sum, they still had to fight for it, not only for the benefits of the title but also not wanting any of the other brothers to get it.

The Second Prince regretted coming to the Ministry of Revenue. Xiao Qing alone was troublesome enough, and now there was Zhou Shuren. After pondering for a while, he couldn’t rush things, ”This prince has other business. I will take my leave.”

Zhou Shuren watched as the Second Prince left without saying anything substantive and turned to Xiao, the Grand Master of Writing, ”Grand Master, did the Second Prince say anything?”

Xiao Qing’s tone was full of regret; he had hoped the Second Prince would say something. Unfortunately, the Prince simply came to meet Zhou Shuren, ”He said nothing.”

Zhou Shuren still had much to do, ”Grand Master, I must return to my duties now.”

”Go ahead.”

After Zhou Shuren left, Xiao Qing’s mouth curved into a smirk; he only needed to wait for the silver to roll in.

The Second Prince had just left in his carriage for a short while when it stopped. Soon after, the Third Prince boarded the carriage.

Zhang Jingyang tapped his palm with his fan, ”Jingyang, you’re brazenly watching over your brother!”
