Transmigration: The Evil Mother-In-Law Is Actually Innocent!

Chapter 668: Chapter 668 Like Silver_1

In Zhou Family Village, Xue Mei was preparing to go to the Jiang family with her daughter when Zhang Datie and his wife walked in just as they reached the courtyard entrance.

Seeing the couple’s haggard expressions, Xue Mei asked, ”What brings you two here?”

Zhang Datie, pulling his wife along, knelt down, ”Please save us, we are out of options, and we can only beg Sir Zhou to save us.”

Xue Mei pulled her daughter back as Old Man Jiang heard the noise and came out of the house, ”What’s happening?”

Xue Mei patted her daughter, ”Go back to the house with Grandpa.”

Jiang Miu clutched her mother’s hand and shook her head, ”Mom, I’ll stay with you.”

Seeing her daughter wouldn’t leave, Xue Mei said to her father, ”Dad, it’s nothing, please go back first.”

Old Man Jiang knew it was not his place to know, so he turned around and went back to the house. Nowadays, the elderly Jiang couple lived comfortably, fully reliant on their son and daughter-in-law’s words. They enjoyed good clothes and food without toil; in their leisure time, they’d stroll in the fields or chat with other old men in the village—a life of leisure envied by many!

Xue Mei brought Zhang Datie and his wife inside the hall, ”Explain clearly, why are you asking to be saved?”

Zhang Datie spoke in a trembling voice, his fear and torment palpable, ”Some time ago, someone came to the village to search for Rongchuan. They snuck into our home in the middle of the night with knives, forcing us to speak without omission. They also threatened us to keep silent about it.”

Xue Mei finally understood why Zhang Datie and his wife always seemed hesitant to speak to her—it was because of this. ”Why are you speaking out now?”

His wife wiped her tears, ”We’re at our wit’s end. We’ve been so tormented, we dare not sleep for fear of being killed. We are well aware that after how we treated Rongchuan, Rongchuan’s biological parents will surely seek revenge on us. Datie said the people who came must have had training, they weren’t ordinary house servants. We’ve truly changed, it was supposed to be over with one settlement.”

Mrs. Zhang’s inner turmoil had reached its breaking point, completely collapsing.

Zhang Datie wiped his face fiercely, ”We only beg that you write a letter to Sir Zhou, hoping to talk to Rongchuan. Please ask Rongchuan to spare us. Even if he won’t spare the two of us, it’s okay, but the children are innocent; they know nothing.”

As he said this, Zhang Datie wiped away tears, living in constant fear each day. They had thought of fleeing, but where could they possibly go? If they were truly sought after, it would be too easy to find them.

Moreover, he didn’t dare flee; he always felt like someone was watching them.

Xue Mei fully understood and also heard important news amidst this: Rongchuan had a significant background, ”I understand. I will write to my family now. You should go back as well.”

Zhang Datie and his wife exchanged a look and thanked her profusely, ”Thank you, thank you.”

After seeing off Zhang Datie and his wife, Xue Mei said somberly, ”That’s why you must be kind, for it is not that fate does not take its toll, but merely that the time has not yet come. Look, the retribution for the Zhang family has arrived.”

Jiang Miu understood, ”Mother, will the Zhang family be in trouble?”

Xue Mei pulled her daughter along to write the letter, ”In the eyes of the powerful, the lives of ordinary people are cheap. And because of how the Zhang couple once mistreated Rongchuan, suffering inflicted on a child is anguish to a mother’s heart; parents harbor hatred for such things.”

Jiang Miu fell silent, ”So the Zhang family will be in trouble.”

Xue Mei did not reply to her daughter, knowing all too well how easy it was for the powerful to take a life.

At the Entrance of the Capital, Zhulan’s family carriage was in line, waiting its turn, though there were not many carriages returning.

Once outside the city gates, the urge to return home surged within Zhulan, but it was unfortunate timing, not being one of Zhou Shuren’s days off. She patted her son’s back, ”Sleep, child. Your mother will wake you when we arrive.”

In Chang Lian’s carriage, Lady Dong sat motionlessly, fixing her clothes now and then, adjusting her sleeves, not holding her daughter today.

Chang Lian, resting his chin on his hand, commented, ”I told you not to wear such cumbersome clothing for a carriage ride. Now you’re tired.”

Lady Dong replied, ”You don’t understand. This is called basking in your glory. This is my new image. Now I’m an official’s wife too.”

Chang Lian was amused, ”So that’s what you’ve been thinking! I’ve always thought you didn’t care!”

Lady Dong was speechless, ”Which eye of yours saw that I didn’t care? I care a lot, though I can’t compare to the Magistrate, I also want to close the distance.”

Chang Lian grasped Lady Dong’s hand, ”You are basking in my light, but as husband and wife, we are one and the same.”

Lady Dong smiled, ”Then may I lean on my husband’s shoulder?”

”Yes, my lady.”

Inside the empress palace, the Empress was somewhat distracted. Ning Xu had been there for a while, but the Empress was still in a daze. When she finally snapped back to reality, Ning Xu said, ”Now that we know Rongchuan is the fifth, and you can’t bear to see him leave, Empress, when do you plan to recognize him?”

The Empress pressed her brow, ”Third Brother, I do want to recognize him, but the timing isn’t right.”

Ning Xu thought to himself, how was the Emperor any different? He too had all sorts of concerns and helplessness, ”Then it seems I must protect him first.”

The Empress, ”I’m counting on you, Third Brother.”

She and the Emperor had thought about secretly recognizing him, but they were afraid. Once recognized, they feared Rongchuan wouldn’t act the part convincingly, and they feared they themselves couldn’t control their emotions. With the hidden forces still unchecked, they couldn’t acknowledge their son.

Their only consolation was that they knew who their biological son was and knew whom to protect. Moreover, with Rongchuan’s appearance, no one would suspect anything if the Ning Residence got involved; everyone knew the eldest son of the Ning family was the apple of Old Master Ning’s eye.

Ning Xu was willing to protect Rongchuan, and just by Rongchuan’s appearance, he was very willing to do so, feeling as though he was protecting his elder brother.

Suddenly, the Empress said, ”Next time, Third Brother, when you send something to Rongchuan, choose something that can be sold for silver. The child likes silver.”

Ning Xu, ”....”

It’s not like I’m dealing with a young miss here, this is somewhat difficult for me. How can I tell Rongchuan that he can sell the gifts I bring?

Noon at the Zhou residence in Jinzhou Province, as soon as Zhulan got off the horse carriage, she saw Zhou Shuren and happily walked towards him, ”How come you’re at home?”

Zhou Shuren, seeing his son running over, stretched out his arms to embrace him and said, ”I knew you were coming back today, so I specifically took a leave.”

Zhulan was overjoyed inside, ”I didn’t even write to you that I was coming back today, and you knew. Does this count as ’telepathy’?”

Zhou Shuren, carrying his son back, ”It does, telepathy.”

Chang Zhong clung tightly to his father’s neck, ”Daddy, I missed you.”

Zhou Shuren, ”Daddy missed you too.”

Zhulan looked at Zhou Shuren and his son, ”It’s really good to be back home.”

Zhou Shuren whispered into Zhulan’s ear, ”You’ve worked hard.”

The crowd at the entrance watched as the parents abandoned them to head back to the courtyard.

Lady Li’s eyes widened, ”Mother ignored us!”

Zhou Laoda and the others looked skyward speechlessly; indeed, she had ignored them, not giving them even a half-glance. In Mother’s eyes, there was only Father!

Chang Lian was also feeling gloomy; he had thought Father would say a few words to him, but he ended up completely overlooking him. Indeed a true father, with eyes only for Mother.
