Transmigration: The Evil Mother-In-Law Is Actually Innocent!

Chapter 390: Chapter 390: The Whole Family Hides from Chang Zhi_1

Zhulan suddenly craved, how had she not thought of roasted whole sheep? Oh my, she actually hadn’t considered it. She had missed out on so much great food. Lady Li’s idea was indeed excellent, ”Okay, you go arrange it!”

Seeing that her mother-in-law was satisfied, Lady Li couldn’t help but smirk. She couldn’t outshine her older sister-in-law, but she might be able to beat her younger brother’s wife. With her mother-in-law away, she had been thinking about how to steal her attention from her older sister-in-law. Although it was still about food, now that her sister-in-law wasn’t cooking, she was in charge of the kitchen, and she had found her method.

When Zhulan wanted to rest, the three daughters-in-law went back.

After lunch, Zhulan returned to the main courtyard with her daughter and pinched her nose, ”I was thinking of looking for you this morning, why didn’t you come over?”

Xue Han smiled, ”Mother, my sisters-in-law wish they could monopolize your attention at every moment. Isn’t this just me giving them a chance?”

The several sisters-in-law at home had not been sparing any effort to compete for their mother’s attention!

Zhulan laughed, ”Come here, mother has brought you back some nice things.”

Xue Han, ”Mother, the gifts you brought me, my older brother gave me them yesterday. Is there something more?”

Zhulan smiled, ”Of course, there is. I’ve brought back a dowry for you, do you want to have a look?”

Xue Han’s face turned red instantly. Before, when Rongchuan was not at home, she missed him from time to time, but when she got busy, she didn’t think about it as much. Now that Rongchuan had returned, she felt different, ”Oh mother.”

Zhulan, understanding that ancient marriages tended to be early, and considering Xue Han’s health, decided to lay her cards on the table, ”Mother is telling you, I plan to keep you here for a few more years.”

Xue Han became even more embarrassed, stamping her foot, ”Mother!”

Zhulan felt a sense of ancient precocity, then stood up, took out the leftover bits of jade stone that Zhou Shuren had carved and polished into jewelry, and brought a small box to Xue Han, ”This is the jade stone scrapings bestowed by the Emperor. Mother plans to have some jewelry made for you all from them.”

Xue Han, ”.....”

She knew about this; no, the entire city knew by now. Some people even specifically came to verify it with her!

Xue Han felt that since her father made jewelry for her mother, it wouldn’t be right for her to take these scraps, ”Mother, those were for you from father. You should keep them. We can get other things later!”

Zhulan thought it was not easy to obtain such high-quality jade stone, and she wanted to give her daughter a respectable dowry. She didn’t feel it wrong to give it to her daughter, especially since the jade stone was quite large and she had no intention of using it all for herself. Moreover, in ancient times, a daughter’s dowry was supposed to be divided among her children, and she didn’t want to be buried with it. After all, she couldn’t take it with her when she died, so it was better left to the living.

Um, no, that was wrong. The dowry specifically given to her by Zhou Shuren, that was something she intended to be buried with. She didn’t want to take anything else with her.

Ptui, ptui, she was in good health; thinking about burial items was way too premature.

In the end, Zhulan decided to take charge herself. She chatted with her daughter for a while longer and then it was already getting late, the days were too short in winter.

That evening, the Zhou family had the roasted whole sheep prepared by a specially invited restaurant chef. The lamb was not very large, principally because there were many people in the family and most of them were grown men – one sheep was hardly enough.

Chang Zhi was thrilled and, seeing snowflakes falling outside, exclaimed, ”Father, this atmosphere is perfect for composing poetry.”

Zhou Shuren didn’t feel the same; full and content, he only wanted to go home and chat with his wife. Who would want to go into the courtyard to compose poetry? Zhou Shuren stood up, hands clasped behind his back, and strode away briskly.

Zhulan saw Zhou Shuren waiting for her at the door, her eyes full of laughter, and she quickly followed.

The thing eldest brother Zhou feared most was reading, and he slipped away, ”This snowy ground is too slippery, I need to support your older sister-in-law back first.”

Zhou’s second son also got up and left. Who would want to compose poetry? He’d rather enjoy a little drink and hum a tune.

Chang Lian was so sick of composing poetry; recently, his master had been teaching him content that made him pull his hair out in frustration, and he’d lost quite a bit of it. ”I drank a bit too much today and want to clear my head and digest a little, my dear, shall we go for a walk together?”

Lady Dong’s eyes gleamed with joy. Her husband was busy with his studies every day, and they hadn’t consummated their marriage, so they rarely contacted each other at night. It had been a long time since she had taken a walk with her husband, ”Alright.”

Rongchuan had seen Chang Zhi’s seriousness himself, and he took Mingyun and left first.

Ming Teng and Ming Rui wore sour faces, taught by their strict uncle. With their grandmother not at home, their uncle’s demands were even higher, especially for Ming Teng, who was reciting poetry every day until he was sick of it.

Now, he and his younger brother Ming Rui wished their uncle was not at home!

Xue Han was the last to stand up, patted her little brother on the shoulder, and walked away with a suppressed laugh.

Chang Zhi looked at the empty dining hall, ”....”

The next day, right after breakfast, as Zhulan was looking at the invitations she had received, Lady Li rushed over, ”Mother, I’ve received a letter from the Qi Clan.”
