Transmigration: The Evil Mother-In-Law Is Actually Innocent!

Chapter 83: Chapter 83 Lonely Souls and Wild Ghosts_1

The tone was unmistakably unwelcoming; Xue Han had truly seen through the third daughter; she was now Wang Ru.

Wang Ru’s appearance had changed. She wore a emerald green Luo skirt and a blue cotton-padded jacket, her sparse hair combed neatly, and a beautifully crafted purse hung at her waist. Xue Han watched in a daze, silently calculating that her outfit cost at least 500 coins. Frowning, she thought that no one in the village ever dressed like this—it was too conspicuous.

Sometimes, she felt Wang Ru was overly cunning, and at other times, foolish. Wang Ru’s family was on the verge of becoming the only household like this in the village—without any support, just like a piece of fat—at the time when they should have kept a low profile, Wang Ru was being too ostentatious. Wasn’t this glaringly telling the whole village, ’My family is very wealthy’?

Wasn’t the lesson from last time enough? Or is it true that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!

Wang Ru assumed that Xue Han was envious of her. Remembering her purpose, she said, ”Xue Han, I have come to apologize. In the past, my envy of you inevitably led to resentment. Today, I sincerely apologize, hoping you can be magnanimous and forgive me.”

Xue Han became alert. Her mother had told her enough stories, especially those about the wolf in sheep’s clothing, biting her lip, ”I understand. You can go back now!”

Seeing that Xue Han lowered her head to continue writing, Wang Ru clenched the handkerchief in her hand, growing more envious. Xue Han, a village girl, had a good father who could read, and she could practice writing on paper. No wonder she caught the male lead’s eye. Wang Ru had not expected to transmigrate into the book. Thinking of Xue Han’s younger brother, Zhou Changzhi, she knew she couldn’t let Zhou Changzhi succeed. Without him, Xue Han would still be just a village girl.

As for stealing the male lead, Wang Ru’s eyes shimmered. Everyone is out for themselves; as the saying goes, ’if you don’t look out for yourself, you’ll come to ruin.’ Besides, Xue Han was always selfish, snobbish, and looked down on others. But it was still safer to be cautious. Thinking about it, she stood in front of the table, lifting her arm to display the Jade Bracelet, ”Young Master Shi is too kind. Look, he not only gave a valuable Jade Bracelet but also a lot of gold and silver. He’s handsome, like a pine stands amongst the clouds, and has a good heart—it’s really hard to find such a good person these days.”

Xue Han tired of listening, and with a frown thought, Wang Ru was acting up again, showing off in her home. ”I’m going to show mother the big characters now. You go on ahead and leave!”

Wang Ru felt a bit foolish. Why didn’t things go according to the script? Wasn’t Xue Han supposed to be jealous, to yearn? It was hard to stay when your face is thickened by rejection, her lips pursed in displeasure, she left.

Xue Han went to the main house to find her mother and imitated Wang Ru’s words and actions, ”Mother, you should have seen Wang Ru—she couldn’t wait to adorn herself with all her fancy things. Her wrists are so skinny and bony and the Jade Bracelet didn’t look good at all. I’m afraid it might slip off her wrist and shatter on the ground.”

Zhulan’s face darkened. Wang Ru really left no stone unturned in her scheming. Not to mention whether the Shi family would take an interest in Xue Han, just the thought that Xue Han might become greedy and easier to manipulate—Wang Ru’s intentions remained venomous. Not only did she want to damage Xue Han’s reputation, but she also aimed to lead Xue Han astray!

Mrs. Zhao was speechless, dryly commenting, ”That third daughter, no, Wang Ru, she seems intent on leading the younger sister-in-law astray. She has far too many malicious thoughts. She’s really not like a child from our village. Then again, she’s changed too much from before.”

Xue Han, who had heard stories about mountain spirits and goblins, was frightened, ”Mother, could it be that Wang Ru has encountered a wandering ghost?”

Zhulan maintained her smile. Child, you’ve got one right before your eyes, no, your house has two, ”Don’t think nonsense. I think Wang Ru’s nature is just like that. Think about Wang Lao Si—didn’t he change as soon as he had some money? Don’t father and daughter resemble each other?”

It dawned on Xue Han, that was indeed the case. Yet, with a pursed lip, she said, ”I didn’t understand before. From now on, I won’t let her visit.”

Zhulan looked on the bright side. With her and Zhou Shuren at home, there was no need to fear that Wang Ru would cheat Xue Han, and it might even be an opportunity to toughen Xue Han up, to prevent her from being easily duped by others in the future.

The next day, Wang Lao Si’s family bought a house. They bought the one two doors away from Zhulan’s place—a main house and wing rooms totaling six rooms that had been newly built two years ago. Wang Lao Si’s family was ostentatious about it; they didn’t keep the purchase a secret. They spent thirty taels on the house, which was a high price. The family who sold the house then spent five taels to buy the one Wang Lao Si had been renting and another five taels to refurbish it— in total, ten taels for six rooms, turning a profit of twenty taels.

Zhulan was speechless at Wang Lao Si’s family’s actions. It was as if they were afraid the villagers wouldn’t know they had money—the lessons from their last ordeal evidently unlearned!

Mrs. Zheng, who couldn’t keep things to herself, was present when the thank-you gifts were delivered. Once she spread the word, the whole village knew what had been given: two rolls of silk fabrics, fifty taels of silver, and some jewellery worth over a hundred taels in total.

Upon hearing this, Zhulan was amused. Wang Ru was straightforward in her requests for thank-you gifts, clearly showing her true colors, treating Wang Ru like a village girl. If it weren’t for the sausage recipe, there wouldn’t have been a hundred taels. Things were getting more and more interesting.
