Gathering Husbands with a System in a Game Like World [BL]

The court ladies had only been passing through the upper east corridor with laundry tallies and a tray of evening tonic bottles when the wall exploded.

One moment the passage was quiet polished stone and soft hanging light. The next, a body came through the side of Lucien’s chamber door in a burst of splintered wood and dust, hit the opposite wall hard enough to crack the plaster, and slid down in a graceless heap. Two of the ladies screamed. One dropped the tonic tray, the glass shattered across the floor in bright useless pieces.

Then Kai stepped through the ruined doorway after him, white hair disordered, knuckles already marked, eyes so flat and furious that the nearest attendant actually backed into the wall without meaning to.

”Don’t touch me,” Kai had said, and the words still seemed to hang in the air when he moved again.

Lucien tried to rise but Kai did not give him the chance. He crossed the corridor in three hard steps and drove another punch into Lucien’s ribs, then another into the side of his face hard enough to snap his head around and send blood out of his nose. A third blow folded Lucien back to his knees. The sound of it was ugly and intimate in the high palace hallway, the kind of sound that left no room for polite interpretation.

Words spread instantly and Within a minute the corridor that had held only frightened court ladies filled with attendants, guards, and half the royal wing’s worth of people drawn by the crash. Claire and Cassandra arrived from one end with matching looks of horror. Lucien’s mother came from the other with a hand already at her mouth. His father followed more slowly, face unreadable, old authority gathering around him like a cloak.

Elias appeared near the far turn of the hall and stopped dead. For once there was no grin on him, no lazy remark waiting. He just watched.

The palace guards moved first. Two of them started forward with polearms lowered, clearly intending to drag Kai off the Crown Prince before the next hit landed. ℯℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

Lucien, bloody mouth and all, lifted one hand sharply.

”Stay back.”

The guards froze.

Kai laughed once under his breath, short and incredulous, and looked down at him.

”Really? You won’t allow them to help you?”

He rushed in again and drove another punch straight through Lucien’s guard, if the weak raise of an arm could even be called that. Lucien took it. His shoulder hit the wall. Dust sifted down from the cracked plaster. He still did not order the guards to intervene and he still did not strike back with anything close to the strength everyone in that hallway knew he possessed.

That was the part that made the watching crowd go strange and quiet.

Anyone with eyes could see the truth of it. Lucien Vaelith the Third, Crown Prince of Eldoria, World Tree Authority, a man who had stood in the sky over a ruined forest and matched an SSS-rank assassin blow for blow, was letting himself get beaten. Not because he was weak. Because he refused to answer the violence with his own. Every time his body twitched toward a real counter, he pulled it back. Every time the green shimmer of his power threatened to rise, he crushed it down. The restraint was deliberate. Painfully deliberate. An act of love so stubborn it looked like stupidity from the outside and like devotion from far too close and to Elias, Rhydian and the rest they knew it was the latter.

Kai did not care what it looked like. He was past the careful version of himself that measured consequences and swallowed pressure until it turned into politeness. He grabbed Lucien by the front of his ruined formal coat and hit him again.

”You wanted to know what my answer is for your proposal,” he said, voice raw and shaking with more than anger. ”Well here. Have it.”

Another punch. Lucien’s head snapped back. Blood ran freely from his split lip and the cut under one eye. Someone in the crowd made a wounded sound. Claire turned her face into Cassandra’s shoulder. Their mother looked like she might cross the hall and stop it herself until Lucien’s father put a hand out without looking away from the fight, a silent order that this would not be interrupted unless Lucien asked.

Elias’s jaw was tight enough to show the muscle. He took one step forward, then stopped, because even he could see that this was not a brawl that wanted a third body in it. This was something narrower and intimate.

Kai hit Lucien again and the prince staggered but stayed upright through what looked like pure refusal to fall. Blood dripped from his chin onto the once-pristine corridor stones. His breathing was rough. One eye was already swelling. Still he did not fight back.

”Fight me,” Kai snarled.

Lucien spat blood to the side and shook his head once.

”No.”

”You think this is noble?” Another blow, this one to the stomach, hard enough that Lucien folded and nearly went down. Kai hauled him back up by the collar. ”You think letting me do this fixes anything?”

”No,” Lucien got out. ”But I will not raise a hand to you.”

That made Kai’s face twist. He shoved Lucien back into the wall hard enough to crack more plaster and followed with a punch that painted a red smear across the white stone beside Lucien’s head. The watching court looked on in pity more than fear now, the kind of pity reserved for people who had clearly gone past the point where dignity still protected them from themselves.

They pitied Kai for the wildness in him. They pitied Lucien for choosing to absorb it.

”You do not get to decide what I am to you in front of a whole table,” Kai said, words breaking against his teeth. ”You do not get to kiss me because you feel too much and then call it a talk. I am not a room you walk into when the pressure is high. I am not a prize for surviving a few disasters together.”

Lucien’s ruined mouth moved.

”I know.”

”You do not know.” Kai’s voice climbed whether he wanted it to or not. ”None of you know. You all keep putting your hands on my life like it is already shared property.”

He swung again. Lucien took that hit too, and the next, and somewhere in the middle of it the fury in Kai’s arms started to change shape. The punches remained hard, but the sound that tore out of him on the fifth or sixth was too close to something else. The hallway blurred. His throat hurt. He hated that the people around them were seeing this, hated that his answer to a marriage proposal had become a public beating, hated that Lucien’s refusal to fight back made every blow feel less like victory and more like bleeding out in a different direction.

”Do not touch me,” Kai said again, and this time it came out thinner. ”You do not understand.”

Lucien pushed himself off the wall with visible effort. Blood ran down his neck and ruined the collar of his coat. He looked like a man who should have been on the floor an hour ago, and still he stepped forward.

”I do not,” he said.

Kai hit him for the honesty of it. The punch landed clean. Lucien’s body shuddered under it, but he remained standing through some stubborn combination of balance and will.

”I know,” Lucien said.

Then he moved before Kai could strike again, not with a counter and not with authority, but with both arms coming up and around him. The hug was clumsy and blood-slick and completely unwelcome for the half-second Kai still had the rage to reject it. He tried to shove free. Lucien held on harder, forehead dropping against Kai’s shoulder, breath wet and uneven against his neck.

”I know,” he repeated, quieter.

That was what did it. Not the earlier restraint. Not the audience, Not even the proposal itself. Just the sound of those two words spoken into his skin by a man who had let himself be beaten rather than become one more person forcing an answer out of Kai with power. The anger in Kai’s chest cracked straight down the middle. His fists, still bunched in Lucien’s ruined coat, stopped pushing. His breath hitched once, hard, and then the tears came with no interest at all in his pride.

He broke down there in the open corridor of the royal wing of Eldoria, forehead dropping against a bloody Lucien while the palace watched in stunned silence. The Crown Prince held him through it and did not let go, even when Kai’s shoulders started shaking and the only thing left in him to spend was the grief underneath all that fury.

No one moved to separate them.

No one dared.
