Flash Marriage: He is a Wife-pampering Addict

Chapter 1377: 1376 grieve with restraint

”Mom, can you stop being so naïve? Back then, you resented the woman Fu Jingyi loved and even helped him hurt her daughter. What gives you the right to expect her son to let go of the past and love your daughter without any hatred?”

Bai Yiyi took several deep breaths, barely managing to calm her emotions a little.

Bai Yuqin was struck dumb by her words. Her face, already pale, turned utterly ashen in an instant.

A look of pain flashed in her eyes.

It wasn’t being forced to confront old wounds that hurt her—it was the fact that the person exposing them was her own daughter. At last, Bai Yuqin believed in karma.

What goes around comes around—just like with her and Fu Jingyi.

They had committed so many sins, hurt so many people, and in the end, they were punished for it. Fu Jingyi hated for a lifetime but could never forget his Yu Han, while she had loved for a lifetime without ever coming close to unlocking his heart.

In the end, she even sacrificed her own daughter’s happiness.

Bai Yuqin was full of regret.

Her eyes glistened faintly with tears, all of them stemming from her guilt toward Bai Yiyi. ”Yiyi, I’m sorry.”

”You’ve been saying sorry ever since you came back. That night, you said ’sorry’ enough to last a lifetime. But what can it change? Can it turn back time? Undo the harm you did to Wen Ran? Bring back her mother so they can be reunited?”

Bai Yiyi forcibly suppressed the emotions that teetered on the verge of collapse. She had been grieving these past few days. Ten days of silence hadn’t eased her pain one bit.

On the contrary, her heart was burdened with guilt over past events, resentment toward her parents, longing for Tongtong, and the conflicting emotions she felt for Gu Kai. They all pulled at her heartstrings like countless threads, tighter and tighter, until it was unbearable.

She didn’t know what to do.

She had feelings for Gu Kai. After over twenty years of life, it was the first time her heart was moved by a man, the first time she mustered the courage to try and experience love. But as soon as it began, it was over.

Bai Yuqin no longer even had the right to say ”sorry.”

She lowered her head, watching her own toes with a face full of sorrow, unsure of what to say.

The atmosphere in the car turned rigid in an instant.

The oppressive air made it hard to breathe. Bai Yiyi raised her head to glance at the roof of the car and said coldly, ”Go back to the countryside for now. I can’t face you calmly at the moment. And I’m sure you don’t want to face Wen Ran or Gu Kai right now. Once I’ve had some time to adjust, I’ll come back to see you.”

”Yiyi, I’ll do what you say.”

Bai Yuqin truly didn’t know how to face Wen Ran and Gu Kai. After she told Gu Kai about what had happened years ago, all he felt for her was hatred.

She couldn’t bring herself to stay in his house any longer.

Now, Bai Yuqin’s only wish was that Gu Kai wouldn’t take it out on Yiyi and that he would take care of Yiyi and Tongtong properly.

Bai Yiyi’s hands clutched the steering wheel tightly before slowly relaxing. She straightened herself, glanced at Bai Yuqin in the rearview mirror—her expression bleak and sorrowful—and ignored the ache in her heart. Starting the car, she headed toward the station.

Kangning Hospital

Gu Kai’s tall frame stood in the hallway outside the operating room.

Watching Fang Zhiwei kneeling on the ground, clinging desperately to Professor Fang as she sobbed uncontrollably, his brows furrowed slightly. After the nurses tried several times to pull Fang Zhiwei away to no avail, he finally stepped forward and said softly, ”Zhiwei, Uncle Fang has passed. Please accept my condolences.”

”No, Ah Kai, I can’t live without my father. I’m begging you, save him one more time. He’ll come back to life...”

Hearing Gu Kai’s voice, Fang Zhiwei suddenly looked up. Her hands, which had been holding onto her father, grabbed Gu Kai’s shirt instead. She knelt on the ground, staring up at him with tear-streaked cheeks.

Gu Kai’s gaze shifted slightly. He reached out to help her up and said sternly, ”Zhiwei, you need to accept reality. No matter how much you grieve, Uncle Fang won’t wake up.”

”I don’t believe it! Ah Kai, if you won’t help me, then I’ll save my dad myself.”

She angrily shoved Gu Kai’s hand away and started pushing her father back toward the operating room.

”Miss Fang, please don’t!” The two nurses were alarmed. Seeing Fang Zhiwei trying to push her father back inside, they hurriedly stepped forward to stop her.

Gu Kai’s face darkened. Suddenly, he raised his hand and delivered a swift chop to the back of Fang Zhiwei’s neck. Her expression froze, her eyes closed, and her body went limp as she fainted.

”Find a room and take her there,” Gu Kai instructed, catching the unconscious Fang Zhiwei and addressing the two nurses beside him.

”Understood, Doctor Gu.”

The two nurses helped Fang Zhiwei away, and Gu Kai then directed the remaining staff to send Professor Fang’s body to the morgue.

”Ah Kai, Fang Zhiwei’s father suddenly fell ill. Do you know what caused it?”

Gu Yan walked out of the operating room, still in surgical scrubs, his expression grave.

Gu Kai’s brows furrowed slightly as he looked at his father. ”Dad, do you know why Uncle Fang suddenly became ill? Zhiwei mentioned before that his health wasn’t great, and I advised her to bring him to the hospital for a check-up, but she never came.”

”It was because of you.”

”Me?”

Gu Yan nodded solemnly. ”According to Fang Zhiwei, her father saw some photos and letters that someone sent her. He became so agitated after seeing them that he fell ill. The photos were of you, Bai Yiyi, and Tongtong.”

Gu Kai’s handsome face immediately clouded over. ”Dad, photos of me and Bai Yiyi? What kind of photos?”

”I don’t know either. Fang Zhiwei said the photos are at home, along with the letters. For the specifics, you’ll have to ask her yourself.”

Gu Kai’s lips pressed into a tight line, and his dark eyes filled with a chilling ice. That morning, he had been thinking of finding time to ask Lu Zhiyan if Qian Songnan was behind the last incident.

He hadn’t expected someone to send Fang Zhiwei photos that very afternoon.

His hands, hanging at his sides, clenched into fists, radiating a cold aura. Seeing this, Gu Yan patted his son’s shoulder. ”Ah Kai, Old Fang said he wanted to donate his body. Later, ask Fang Zhiwei if she’s willing to sign the papers. If she isn’t, then don’t force her.”

”I understand,” Gu Kai replied stiffly.

Gu Yan sighed lightly. His phone rang, and after saying a few words to Gu Kai, he turned and stepped away to take the call.

Gu Kai returned to his office. A few minutes later, a nurse called to inform him that Fang Zhiwei had regained consciousness.

When Gu Kai arrived at the ward, Fang Zhiwei was being restrained at the door by two nurses, her face filled with anger.

”Zhiwei, calm down. Let’s talk.” Gu Kai gestured to the two nurses, signaling them to leave. Then he stepped forward, grabbed Fang Zhiwei, who was trying to rush out, and led her to a chair.

”Let go of me. I want to be with my dad!” Fang Zhiwei’s eyes were red and swollen, her voice hoarse. Always known for her polished demeanor, she now looked utterly disheveled, her hair messy and unkempt. Her grief-stricken appearance made her seem even more pitiable than her elegant self ever could.
