Exposed to the CEO Behind the Mafia Mask

Chapter 599: Chapter 195 Confronting Reality

Daniel’s POV

I couldn’t fathom Lila’s decision to invite my entire family to our penthouse. The Martinez family patriarch and matriarch dining at our table felt like inviting wolves into our sanctuary. To make matters worse, she’d surrendered our master suite to my parents, relegating me to share the guest room with my youngest brother Gregory. The thought of sleeping without Lila beside me, especially with my family’s presence poisoning our home, made my blood simmer. Still, I’d endure this charade for her sake, since reconciliation seemed to matter to her.

As the evening dragged on, watching my parents conduct themselves as if they’d never conspired against my relationship with Lila made my skin crawl. They sat at our dining table like benevolent family heads, as if they hadn’t allied themselves with that Sullivan family witch to destroy the woman I loved. If listening to their political theater would appease Lila, fine—I’d play along. But their presence here wouldn’t erase the damage they’d caused or change the cold war between us once they returned to their estate.

”Daniel!” Lila’s sharp warning glance cut through my hostility, clearly reading the murderous intent in my expression.

”Little one, they’re here because you insisted. I’ll listen as promised, but we’re settling this tonight. I won’t drag this out until tomorrow.” My tone brooked no negotiation, carrying the authority that made both street thugs and corrupt politicians tremble.

”Very well, that’s reasonable!” My father nodded with the measured dignity of a man accustomed to commanding respect in boardrooms and back alleys alike. ”Lila, Daniel has every right to harbor resentment toward us. You must understand, I opposed your union because I believed you weren’t suitable for my son—a young woman from an unknown background with no established family connections...” He addressed Lila directly, his political instincts warning him against meeting my predatory stare.

”Mr. Martinez,” Lila replied with unexpected steel in her voice, the kind of composure that marked true nobility in our world, ”I understand family concern, but forcing your will upon your children through manipulation and conspiracy crosses every line. That applies to you as well, Mrs. Martinez.”

Her direct challenge caught me off guard. I hadn’t expected her to confront the Martinez family matriarch and patriarch so boldly, especially given their reputation for crushing those who dared oppose them.

”I’m beginning to recognize that truth, Lila.” My father offered her a genuine smile—not the calculated expression he wore during family business meetings or political negotiations. ”But understand, my controlling nature and territorial instincts don’t negate my love for both of you. In our world, weakness invites destruction.”

”I understand that philosophy,” Lila said quietly, her voice carrying the wisdom of someone who’d survived her own family’s treacherous politics. ”It’s because I believe you’re fundamentally protective parents that I convinced Daniel to hear your explanation. And only because I believe your intentions stemmed from misguided loyalty rather than malice that I’m willing to consider moving beyond what happened.”

It was clear Lila had already chosen the path of strategic reconciliation—I should have anticipated she’d find a diplomatic solution, given how deeply she valued family unity, even in our corrupt world.

”I want to know exactly what you discussed with Claire Sullivan.” My anger flared, remembering how that psychopathic matriarch had orchestrated Lila’s kidnapping and brutal treatment. ”Every detail of your alliance with that monster.”

”Not extensively. We simply agreed your relationship posed problems for both families’ interests. She mentioned finding a way to separate you two permanently, and I offered support for whatever measures she deemed necessary. I provided her with my private contact information and left her to handle the details. Lila, I swear on the Martinez family honor that I had no knowledge of her methods or her true intentions.” The room fell silent, everyone present understanding the gravity of invoking family honor in such a declaration.

Lila sighed, lowering her gaze to her hands. ”You didn’t know she’d hire professional kidnappers to snatch me off the street? Didn’t know she would have me beaten and tortured? Didn’t know she planned to force me into marriage with a much older man—a degenerate who profits from human trafficking?”

”She only mentioned taking you back to the Sullivan estate and arranging a suitable marriage alliance. I assumed it would be with someone from an established family, not some aging criminal with a reputation for brutality.” My father kept his voice steady, his politician’s training evident. ”Lila,” he called until she met his eyes. ”I never imagined Claire Sullivan was capable of such savagery. Had I known her true nature, I would never have provided assistance. Despite my belief in controlling my children’s choices for family advantage, I never condoned violence against innocents—such methods are beneath the Martinez family standards.”

This much held truth. The Martinez family maintained strict codes about civilian casualties and unnecessary brutality, preferring manipulation and financial pressure to physical violence.

”You couldn’t imagine? What exactly did you think she would accomplish?” My voice rose dangerously, the rage I’d suppressed for weeks finally erupting.

”Something similar to what your mother attempted with Sybilla—a confrontation, perhaps forcible transportation to family property, maybe confinement until you lost interest. That represented the worst scenario I could envision.” My father answered without hesitation, his confession carrying the weight of genuine remorse.

”Let me enlighten you about your ally’s true methods.” I retrieved my phone, accessing the encrypted files, and placed it before him. ”This is the man Claire selected as Lila’s husband—a human trafficker and loan shark who’s brutalized dozens of women.” I watched disgust register on his face before swiping to the next image. ”And this is what your partner Claire Sullivan did to Lila. The damage would have been far worse if we hadn’t reached her compound in time.”

The weight of his choices hung heavy in our dining room, my father’s complexion paling as he confronted the photographic evidence. Behind his eyes, I could see shock warring with genuine shame, perhaps the first step toward comprehending the magnitude of his miscalculation. Lila placed her hand on mine, her touch both grounding and compassionate, reminding me why her capacity for forgiveness made her extraordinary in our ruthless world.
