I Became the Villain Alpha's Omega (BL)

The heavy silence in the library stretched between them, thick and almost suffocating. Even the faint rustle of turning pages had long since ceased, leaving only the stillness of the vast room around them. Near the high oak desk, neither of them moved.

Cherion’s frown deepened as his eyes flicked back down to the open page, staring at the intricate ink diagrams of severed spiritual threads. He swallowed hard, pulling his hands back from the book as if the parchment itself had suddenly grown hot.

”Zarius,” Cherion repeated softly, his voice barely above a whisper. ”Why are you looking into this?”

Zarius didn’t flinch, nor did he offer a quick, convenient lie. He sat quietly in his high-backed leather chair, watching the sudden, genuine confusion and concern written across Cherion’s face. Slowly, Zarius reached out, taking the corner of the heavy book, and closed it with a muted, dusty thud. He pushed the book off to the side, letting his hands rest flat on the dark wood of the desk.

”Because I am a man who prepares for possibilities,” Zarius said, his voice quiet, low, and completely honest.

Cherion stood up straight, crossing his arms over his chest as he studied Zarius’s unreadable face. ”Possibilities? Zarius, this isn’t some ancient northern history or border strategy. This is high-level spiritual magic. It’s kinda taboo, isn’t it?” Cherion let out a small, bewildered sigh, shaking his head. ”Are you... worried about someone using magic against us? Or is this about something else?”

Zarius looked up, his dark, sharp eyes holding Cherion’s gaze with a vulnerability he rarely showed to anyone else in the realm.

”It is about you,” Zarius confessed plainly.

Cherion blinked, caught completely off guard. ”Me?”

”Ever since I learned the truth,” Zarius continued, his tone dropping into a deeper, gravelly pitch that carried the quiet weight of late-night thoughts, ”I have not been able to stop thinking about how you came to be here. You told me your soul belongs to another world. That you woke up in this body one day.”

Cherion nodded slowly, a small, subtle knot forming in his stomach. ”Yes. I did.”

”If a soul can cross from another world and settle into this vessel so seamlessly...” Zarius paused, his jaw tightening slightly as if speaking the words out loud caused him physical pain. ”Then what is stopping it from happening again? What is stopping this world from pulling you back? Or another soul from taking your place?”

Cherion stood entirely still, the realization hitting him like a splash of ice water. He stared at Zarius, watching the subtle tension in the Duke’s broad shoulders, the slight furrow between his dark brows.

Zarius wasn’t researching forbidden magic out of suspicion or cold curiosity. He was doing it out of pure, terrifying helplessness. He was a man who could command armies, manage vast territories, and cut down enemies without blinking, yet he was completely powerless against the mysterious, invisible laws that had brought Cherion to him in the first place.

”Zarius...” Cherion murmured softly.

”I know it sounds irrational,” Zarius said, letting out a dry, breathy exhale as he leaned back into his chair, rubbing the bridge of his nose with two fingers. ”The world is vast, and I know so little of how your arrival actually worked. But the thought of waking up one morning, looking into your eyes, and finding a stranger staring back at me... or finding an empty shell...” He trailed off, shaking his head. ”It is not a thought I enjoy sitting with.”

Cherion let out a long, quiet sigh. The residual bewilderment in his chest melted away, replaced entirely by a warm, aching tenderness. He stepped around the corner of the heavy desk, coming to stand directly beside Zarius’s chair.

”I hate seeing you like this,” Cherion whispered softly.

Zarius looked up, offering a faint, rueful half-smile. ”I apologize. It is foolish of me to make you worry over my own absurd overthinking.”

”It isn’t foolish,” Cherion corrected gently. He reached out, his warm, slender fingers brushing against Zarius’s cheek, resting against the firm line of his jaw. ”You care about me. That isn’t foolish, Zarius. But...” Cherion tilted his head, his light eyes holding Zarius’s with steady, absolute clarity. ”...it is okay to overthink things, as long as you don’t let it trap you. If you spend all your energy worrying about magic and every little thing that might go wrong, you’re going to lose your mind before we even make it to the South.”

Zarius leaned his face into Cherion’s touch, closing his eyes for a brief, quiet second as he inhaled the familiar, calming scent of soap and honey that lingered around Cherion.

”I suppose,” Zarius murmured, opening his eyes and looking up at him. ”Though you are usually the only one who can pull me out when my mind gets trapped like that.”

”Then let me pull you out,” Cherion said softly, his thumb gently stroking Zarius’s cheekbone. ”I am here, Zarius. Right now, in this body, in this library. My soul isn’t floating away, and no one is swapping places with me. I am staying right beside you.”

Zarius reached up, wrapping his broad hand around Cherion’s wrist, holding his hand against his cheek for a long, quiet moment. The heavy, lingering dread that had hovered over the desk since he opened the book finally began to loosen its grip.

”All right,” Zarius agreed quietly, his voice softening. ”I will take your word for it.”

”Good,” Cherion smiled, his cheeks dimpling slightly. ”Now promise me you’ll leave these dusty old books in the restricted section where they belong.”

”I promise,” Zarius replied smoothly.

Before Cherion could tease him any further, three crisp, polite knocks echoed against the heavy wooden door at the far end of the library.

”Enter,” Zarius called out, his voice instantly shifting back into its firm, authoritative tone as he released Cherion’s wrist.

The heavy door swung open quietly, and Reiner stepped into the room, holding his posture straight and professional. He carried a small silver tray, upon which sat a single, neatly folded parchment sealed with unmarked, deep blue wax.

”Your Grace,” Reiner said, bowing his head respectfully toward Zarius before turning his attention to Cherion. He held a sealed letter carefully between his fingers, the folded parchment bearing the name of its intended recipient across the front.

”A letter has just arrived for Lord Cherion.”

Cherion straightened at once, his attention drawn to the letter in Reiner’s hand.

Who could possibly have sent him a letter?
