I Became the Villain Alpha's Omega (BL)

Four months had drifted by since Azar’s creaky wooden wagon dropped Philia off at the gate of Havenwood, but for the six-year-old boy, time felt like it was standing dead still.

He didn’t speak. Not a single word.

During his first week under the drafty roof, Livya had arranged for an old traveling healer from the lower township to check on him. The man had smelled faintly of dried mint, stale tobacco, and damp earth. He checked on Philia’s bony ribs, behind his ears, and peered down his throat with a flickering oil lantern before stepping back to wipe his wire-rimmed spectacles on his sleeve.

”His body is whole enough,” the old man had murmured. ”No swelling, no damage to his throat or tongue. The boy probably suffered a terrible shock. When trauma hits a child like that, they just go quiet. Give him warm broth, keep his feet dry, and leave him be. If he ever feels like talking, he’ll talk.”

So they left him be.

It didn’t take long for the other children to lose interest in him. Orphans had very little patience for a playmate who never made a sound, never yelled, and never chased after a ball. When the rest of the kids spilled out into the muddy courtyard every afternoon to play tag or shoot glass marbles into holes in the dirt, Philia stayed behind, sitting by himself on the wide wooden window sill of the second-floor dormitory. He’d rest his chin on his knees, staring through the wavy glass as the cold autumn wind shook the bare branches of the trees outside.

To the rest of the household, he became little more than a piece of quiet furniture. The older boys called him ”The Mute” when they thought Livya wasn’t close enough to hear, or ”The Wooden Boy” because he could sit in one spot for three hours without moving a muscle. During supper, older kids would bump his shoulder to snag the bigger crusts of sourdough off his wooden plate.

Philia never fought back. He never even looked them in the face. He just chewed his cabbage soup slowly, staring at the swirling knots in the pine table, letting their chatter slide right past him like rain on a slate roof. Staying invisible was safe. If no one looked at him, no one would ask where he came from, who his father was, or why he held his arms so close to his sides.

Only Livya refused to let him turn into a ghost.

Every night after the narrow cots in the dormitory were full of sleeping children, she’d walk down the center aisle with a brass lamp held low. She’d stop by Philia’s bed, pull his rough wool blanket up to his chin, and sit on the edge of the mattress for a few minutes just to trim his dark bangs with a pair of small iron shears.

”You don’t have to say anything, little one,” she’d whisper softly, her thumb gently brushing a bit of dried mud off his cheek. ”Just get some rest. You’re safe under this roof.”

Philia would stare at the tiny orange flame bobbing inside her lamp, keeping his hands buried deep under his blanket.

Whenever he was alone in the quiet dark, his mind always drifted back to his small, scraped hands, specifically the strange, faint pulse of heat that flickered beneath his palms whenever fear or cold settled into his bones.

He didn’t understand it, no matter how hard his small brain tried to piece it together. He remembered sitting near the grand stone fireplace of his old home months ago, back when the world was whole. His mother had been combing his hair while his father sat across the rug, reading a heavy leather-bound ledger. They had spoken to him in quiet, careful tones, telling him that their family was different from the people around them.

”We carry something special inside us, Philia,” his mother had whispered, her voice soft but heavy with a strange sadness. ”But you must never show anyone. To some people, power like ours looks like a curse. They think it brings nothing but misfortune.”

Back then, Philia had just nodded, thinking it was some kind of game or a bedtime story. He didn’t understand what ”misfortune” meant until the night the sky turned red. Was this heat the reason his home was burned? Was this tiny, pulsing warmth the reason his mother had looked so terrified when she pushed him down?

The thought made his stomach twist into a tight knot. Whenever the heat started to thrum beneath his raw skin, he would press his palms flat against his thighs, squeezing his eyes shut, trying with all his might to stomp the warmth out before anyone noticed. He hated it. He hated not understanding why a gift from his parents felt like a mark that could get him killed.

Worse still, he had no one left to ask. The two people who could have explained this to him were gone.

What started as an ordinary morning in Havenwood shattered in an instant.

Livya and the three older girls who helped run the kitchen were flying through the wooden corridors before sunrise, dragging out bundles of clean linen, scrubbing the floorboards with harsh lye soap, and barking orders at anyone old enough to hold a straw broom.

”Hurry up now! Wash your faces, tuck in those tunics!” Livya’s voice rang out through the main hallway as she ushered roughly twenty children into two neat lines along the wall near the front entrance.

Philia was shoved toward the back, right into the dark shadow beneath the heavy oak staircase, by a taller boy named Jorah. Philia didn’t mind. He stood quietly in his corner, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his patched grey trousers, watching the maids frantically polish the brass door handles until they gleamed.

”Why are we doing all this work?” Jorah grumbled under his breath, shifting from foot to foot. ”It’s just gonna get tracked up with mud by midday anyway.”

”Keep your tongue behind your teeth, Jorah,” Livya said sternly, though her own hands were shaking slightly as she straightened a little girl’s collar near the front of the line. ”We have an important guest coming up. Lord Antel himself is stopping by on his way to the Capital.”

Philia’s chest went completely hollow.

The air rushed out of his lungs in a sharp, silent gasp that no one heard over the commotion. Every muscle in his body went rigid. His fingernails bit so hard into his palms through his trouser pockets that the skin nearly broke.

Antel.

The name echoed in his ears, making his knees go weak and wobbly.

It was the exact same name. For a second, the present faded, replaced by the bitter, flat voices of the men who’d killed them. He could still hear every word.

Philia sank an inch deeper into the dark shadow under the stairs, pressing his spine flat against the cold wall.

The man who had hurt his family was coming.
