Chapter 124: The Lands of the Dead

The black wall rose from the sea like the spine of some ancient beast, stretching impossibly high into the grey northern sky.

Jon Snow stood at the prow of the small galley, one hand resting on the icy rail.

He had known about it from his, of course. He had been there when it was created, before he left the Night’s Watch.

But seeing it once more did not make it seem less imposing.

The Wall had always been a wonder…a testament to the ancient magic of the First Men and the tireless labor of the Night’s Watch. Jon had walked its length, had stood atop it and looked north into the vast white wilderness beyond.

But this... this was something else entirely.

The Wall was no longer made of ice. It was made of some black, oily stone that seemed to drink the light from the sky. The surface shimmered faintly, catching reflections like polished obsidian. And yet, for all its darkness, it did not feel evil. There was a warmth to it, a strange pulsing energy that Jon could feel even from this distance.

”Gods be good, that thing is real?” muttered one of the Stark men beside him, a grizzled veteran named Harwin. ”I’ve seen things in my time, m’lord. I marched with your father in the Greyjoy Rebellion. I saw the Iron Fleet burn. But this is...” He shook his head. ”This is beyond anything I could have imagined.”

Jon said nothing. He could feel it now, the power emanating from the Wall. A warmth that should not exist this far north, a sense of protection that wrapped around his skin like an invisible cloak.

He reached out with his senses…something he had only recently learned to do, something that had awakened within him after the ritual that brought him back from the dead.

The Wall was more than just stone now. It was a barrier of pure magic, a ward against the darkness that lurked beyond. But there was something else beneath it, something older and stranger. A whisper of power that resonated with his blood.

Dragon blood.

He had been a Snow his entire life, a bastard of Winterfell, a son of the North. But now he knew the truth…the truth his father, Ned Stark, had kept hidden for so long. His mother was Lyanna Stark, and his father was Rhaegar Targaryen. The prince who had started a war for love. The dragon who had died on the Trident.

Jon had spent countless hours wrestling with this revelation, turning it over in his mind like a stone he could not bear to drop.

He was a Stark…that much was certain. The blood of Winterfell ran through his veins, as strong and cold as the northern winds. But he was also a Targaryen, a son of the dragonlords, heir to a legacy of fire and madness.

’What does that make me?’ he wondered. ’What am I supposed to be?’

He had joined the Night’s Watch because he had no place in the world, no home, no future. The Wall had been his purpose, his calling.

But the Watch was no longer his home.

Jon had been brought back to life by a ritual he still did not fully understand. A ritual that had included dragon blood, for what the Red Woman told him…the blood of the very ancestors he had only recently learned were his own.

He had woken from death feeling stronger, faster, more alert than ever before. His senses had sharpened, his reflexes honed to a razor’s edge. He could see in the dark, hear the whisper of a mouse from a hundred paces away.

One of the first things he did after his awakening was to chop the head of Alliser Thorne and the rest of the men who had betrayed him.

He did it by wielding Ice, the ancestral greatsword of the Starks, and he wielded it with incredible ease, not yet realizing how strong he had become.

In a matter of minutes, a dozen men lay at his feet.

After that day, he had felt... disconnected. Like a puzzle piece that no longer fit the picture it had once completed.

He had died at the Wall, executed by Stannis’s men, and had felt the cold embrace of death, but then he had been pulled back by magic he could not explain.

’Why?’ he had asked Joffrey after the ritual. ’Why did you bring me back?’

Joffrey had looked at him with those strange green eyes of his.

”Because you still may have a role to play in all of this before it’s all over.”

Jon had not understood then. He was not sure he understood now. But he had felt something stir within him that day, something that went beyond mere survival. A purpose, perhaps. A reason to keep fighting.

’The Others,’ he thought, his gaze fixed on the black wall ahead. ’The real war is coming. And there is something I can do about it.’

The galley cut through the cold grey waters, making for a stretch of coast just south of Hardhome.

The plan was simple. They would land as close as possible to the ruined settlement, scout the area, and gather whatever evidence Jon could find to convince the Northern lords of the true threat.

A wight’s hand, a head, or anything that would prove the tales he had told in Winterfell.

But as they drew nearer to the shore, Jon felt a prickle of unease along his spine. The Wall’s protective warmth still hummed in his blood, but there was something else now. A coldness that seeped through the ship’s hull, their furs, and went directly into their bones.

The cold had never bothered him, but this one was different…unnatural.

”Ghost,” Jon murmured, and the great white direwolf padded silently to his side. Ghost’s red eyes were fixed on the shore, his hackles rising, a low growl rumbling in his chest.

Jon rested his hand on Ghost’s head, feeling the tension in the wolf’s powerful body. ”You feel it too,” he said quietly. ”This cold.”

The Stark men were growing uneasy as well. They had been instructed to hold their tongues and follow Jon’s lead, but he could see the fear in their eyes as the coast drew nearer.

This was not their world. They were soldiers, men of the North, accustomed to the cold and the snow. But this was something else…a land that had been consumed by darkness, a place where the dead walked freely.

”Easy now,” Jon called out, his voice steady despite the knot of fear in his chest. ”We’ll land just beyond that outcrop. Stay close, and watch for anything moving.” He tightened his grip on his Valyrian steel sword, Longclaw.

If the stories were true, then this would be their best weapon against those creatures.

The galley scraped against the rocky shore, and Jon was the first to leap onto the frozen ground.

He immediately felt the strange cold seep through his boots.

Ghost leaped down beside him, his white fur blending almost perfectly with the snow. The direwolf’s ears were flat against his skull, and his growl had deepened into a snarl.

”Spread out,” Jon ordered, keeping his voice low. ”Form a line. Harwin, you’re with me. The rest of you, watch the flanks.”

They moved inland, following a narrow track that wound through the frozen landscape. The snow was deep here, reaching past their knees in places. The sky was a pale, sickly grey, and the sun was a dim ghost barely visible through the clouds.

Jon led them toward a ridge that overlooked Hardhome. From here, he hoped to get a clear view of the settlement and assess the situation before committing to anything. The ruins of the wildling town lay in the distance, a jumble of blackened timbers and collapsed huts.

He raised his spyglass and peered through it, scanning the ruins. His enhanced vision picked out details that would have been invisible to him before the ritual…the shapes of bodies scattered across the frozen ground, the glint of broken weapons, the thin wisps of smoke that curled up from the wreckage.

And then he saw them.

They were everywhere…hundreds of them, perhaps thousands. Wights, their pale blue eyes glowing in the dim light, their ragged bodies moving with that horrible, jerking motion that was so unlike the living.

They milled about the ruins of Hardhome like ants disturbed from their nest, stumbling over broken timbers and fallen corpses.

Jon’s blood ran cold.

”Seven hells,” Harwin breathed, his voice barely more than a whisper. ”There must be thousands of them.”

Jon did not answer. He was counting, his mind working furiously. The wights were too many to fight, too many to even hope to defeat. But they seemed disorganized, aimless…a horde without purpose. And there were no White Walkers among them, at least none that Jon could see.

’Still,’ he thought grimly, ’if they notice us, we won’t last a heartbeat.’

”Stay low,” he said quietly. ”We’re just here to scout. Don’t give them any reason to-”

A piercing shriek cut through the air, and Jon spun around.

Behind them, emerging from the snow like demons rising from the underworld, were a dozen wights. They had been lurking beneath the surface, waiting, and now they were upon them. Their hands reached out with unnatural speed, their eyes glowing with that terrible blue light.

”Fight!” Jon shouted, drawing his sword. ”Fight for your lives!”

The Stark men reacted quickly, forming a defensive circle as Jon had taught them.

Harwin drove his steel spear through the chest of the nearest wight, but the creature merely staggered, the blade punching through its frozen flesh without effect.

It kept coming, clawed hands reaching for Harwin’s throat, and he barely managed to shove it back with his shield.

”Steel won’t kill them!” Jon shouted, his voice cutting through the chaos. ”You have to break them! Dismember them! Take off their heads!”

The men adapted as best they could, hacking at limbs and necks, trying to shatter the frozen bodies with brute force.

A wight’s arm came off, but it kept crawling toward its victim. A head was severed, but the body still lunged forward, seeking to rend and tear.

Jon moved like a storm through the press of enemies. His enhanced speed carried him faster than any mortal man, his sword flashing as he took heads from shoulders and limbs from torsos. He was stronger than he had ever been, more precise, his reflexes honed to a razor’s edge.

His Valyrian steel sword was able to destroy these wights with relative ease, but there were so many of them.

They were being overwhelmed. For every wight he hacked apart, two more seemed to take its place.

The Stark men were brave, but they were mortal, and their human limits were rapidly approaching.

One fell, his leg crushed beneath a wight’s claw, and Jon had to drag him back to his feet while cutting down the creatures that tried to finish him.

Another went down under a pile of grasping hands, his screams cut short as the wights tore into him…tearing flesh from bone with fingers like frozen iron.

Jon could feel the cold growing stronger, deeper. It was feeding on them, draining their warmth, their life. His enhanced senses picked up the subtle change in the air, the way the shadows seemed to lengthen and deepen. The wights were more than just dead bodies; they were instruments of the Others, extensions of that ancient, malevolent will that lurked in the heart of the frozen wastes.

’We’re not going to make it,’ Jon realized, and the thought filled him with a cold despair. ’Have I led these men to their doom?’

Ghost’s jaws snapped as he tore wights apart with savage efficiency. But even the direwolf could only do so much.

The wights kept coming, climbing over the bodies of their fallen, their blue eyes fixed on the living with an intensity that was beyond hunger.

Jon was about to order a final retreat, to stay behind so that the rest might escape, when the first arrow flew past his ear and buried itself in the skull of a wight lunging at him.

The creature exploded into a shower of ice and bone, and Jon turned to see a group of figures emerging from the snow-covered rocks above them.

They were wildlings…a dozen of them, dressed in furs and leathers. And they were shooting black-tipped arrows into the wights with deadly precision.

The difference was immediate and devastating. Where Jon’s men had been forced to hack and chop, the wildlings’ arrows ended wights with a single shot, shattered the magic that held the dead together, reducing them to piles of frozen debris.

”Get down, you crows!” a voice shouted, sharp and commanding. ”Unless you want to catch an arrow in the arse!”
