Chapter 98: Born of Fire

The endless void was bathed in a golden light.

Joffrey watched as the phoenix spread its wings for the first time, its feathers shimmering with hues of gold and deep crimson, like a living flame given form.

The creature soared through the darkness, its cry echoing in the emptiness, and Joffrey could feel it resonating with his own soul.

It was a song of creation, rebirth, and life emerging from the ashes of death.

The others stared in awe, their faces illuminated by the phoenix’s flames. Despite coming from different backgrounds and having no way of understanding exactly what they were looking at, they all knew they were witnessing something very special.

”What... what is it?” Val asked, her voice barely a whisper. ”I’ve never heard of a bird made of fire before. Is it a demon? A spirit? What manner of creature is this?”

”It’s beautiful,” Gilly breathed, her eyes fixed on the magnificent creature.

”I’ve never seen anything so beautiful. The flames... they don’t burn. They just... glow.”

Ned Stark shook his head slowly, his face a mask of confusion and wonder. ”I’ve heard many stories about strange creatures in my life. But this... this is something else entirely. This is beyond anything I could have imagined.”

Joffrey’s lips curled into a thin smile, his eyes fixed on the soaring creature. ”It is a phoenix. They are powerful magical creatures...extremely rare, intelligent, and nearly immortal. When a phoenix dies, it is reborn from its own ashes, stronger than before. They are beings of pure life and fire.”

He paused, his gaze growing distant as he watched the creature soar through the void. ”But this one here is quite unique, given where it came from. I believe this one is something closer to the legends I heard from some distant lands a very long time ago. A creature of such power that it could rival the gods themselves. Capable of creating life and even entire worlds.”

Ned gave him a sharp look, his brow furrowed. ”That does sound like a god. Are you telling us that we are looking at a god?”

”Maybe we are, but this one is still a newborn,” Joffrey replied, his voice measured. ”It may take him thousands or even millions of years before it can be compared with its progenitor...the potential is there.”

He turned his attention back to the phoenix, his mind racing with theories and potential connections.

The fire creature he had met in Stygai, the being of pure flame that had spoken to him in the heart of the black stone mountain, it had to be a phoenix as well. A very ancient phoenix, perhaps the first of its kind in this universe.

The black stone that had covered its body, the oily stone that had seemed to drink in the light... Joffrey now understood its purpose. The stone was not there to protect the creature itself, but to protect others from its fire.

The phoenix’s flames were so intense, so pure, that they would have melted anything that came too close. The stone was a barrier, a way for the creature to interact with the world without destroying everything around it.

That would also explain why its blood had given birth to so many creatures in the lands of Westeros. The dragons, the wyverns, even the firewyrms of Valyria...they were all descended from this primordial being.

A phoenix god was a being that represented life, creation, and resurrection. Its blood was the stuff of creation itself, the spark that had ignited the fires of life across the continent.

It was magic in its purest form, the raw power of existence given shape and purpose.

”Excuse me... Joffrey?” Gilly called for him, her voice tentative.

”Yes?” Joffrey replied, his attention shifting to the wildling woman.

She lifted a piece of something black that she held in one hand. Joffrey recognized it immediately. It was a shard of the egg shell that had contained the phoenix.

During its birth, the egg had exploded, sending its fragments everywhere, but it seemed like one had landed on the wildling girl. The shard was dark and smooth, its surface gleaming with a faint, oily sheen.

”Do you need this back?” Gilly asked, her voice uncertain. ”It’s still very warm, and the baby seems to like it. He stopped crying when I held it close to him.”

Joffrey looked at the shard, his eyes narrowing with interest. Now that it was broken, he could see layers inside and realized that it was very similar to the black stone conjured by its progenitor. The same oily texture, the same faint luminescence, the same sense of ancient power.

There must be some deeper correlation between the phoenix and this black stone...perhaps the stone was a byproduct of its creation, a physical manifestation of its power.

He was about to open his mouth to say something, when Val tapped his shoulder, her expression impatient.

”Okay, so the bird is very impressive and pretty,” Val said, her voice sharp with urgency. ”But how can it help us escape? You said we didn’t have much time. We’re still floating in this endless void.”

Joffrey shook his head, a hint of irritation in his voice. ”You do not seem to understand yet. This creature has immense power already, even though it is still a newly hatched babe. Its flames can burn through space itself and tear the fabric of reality. If we can convince it to cooperate, it may be able to break us free of this void.”

”Convince it?” Ned asked, his brow furrowed. ”How do you convince a bird to do anything? Can it even understand us? It was just born moments ago.”

”Phoenixes are extremely intelligent,” Joffrey replied, his voice patient but firm. ”Even this new hatchling should have a mental capacity that is at least on par with a young human child, perhaps more. And there is a connection between us...I hatched it, gave it my blood and magic. It should recognize that connection.”

At least he hoped that was the case. Because this creature was their only ticket out of here. If the phoenix could not or would not help them, they would die here very soon.

He reached out with his mind, his consciousness brushing against the phoenix’s. The creature was a swirl of bright emotions and sensations...curiosity, joy, a sense of freedom. It was like touching a living flame. The connection was solid, a thread of magic that linked their souls.

’Little one,’ Joffrey thought, trying to communicate through feeling, concepts, and emotions instead of words that the creature was unlikely to understand.

He tried to send a clear message, a clear goal to the creature.

’We are trapped here. We need help to escape this place. Can you help us?’

The phoenix paused in its flight, its head tilting as if listening. Its golden eyes fixed on Joffrey, and he felt a response...a sense of understanding, of willingness. The creature had been born in this void, but it knew, somehow, that it did not belong here. It wanted to see the sky, to feel the wind beneath its wings.

The response came in the form of an emotion that reached him through their connection. The phoenix had understood his request and was willing to help.

Joffrey felt a surge of relief. ”Okay... I think he understood the message and will try to help us.”

He did not tell them the full truth...that he could already feel himself reaching his limits and could barely maintain the flying carpet and the magical barrier that was keeping them alive.

If this did not work, they would die in a few minutes. There was no point in everyone panicking now.

”Look! It’s doing something,” Val pointed at the fire bird.

The phoenix let out a cry...a beautiful sound that seemed to resonate with the very essence of creation. Its flames grew brighter, more intense, until they were nearly blinding.

The heat was immense, but it did not burn them. Instead, it wrapped around them like a warm embrace, a cocoon of fire and light.

”Everyone, hold on to something,” Joffrey shouted, his voice rising above the roar of the flames. ”This may be... unpleasant!”

The others grabbed onto the edges of the carpet, their faces pale with fear.

They watched as the creature gathered its power, preparing to tear a hole in the fabric of the void. But it was young, newly born, and its strength was limited. It would only have enough energy for one attempt. If it failed, there would be no second chance.

The phoenix let out another cry, and its flames engulfed them completely.

The world dissolved around them...the darkness, the silence, the emptiness all replaced by blinding light and searing heat.

Joffrey felt himself being pulled, twisted, stretched across dimensions.

His magic flared in response, trying to protect them, but it was not enough. The phoenix’s power was too great, too overwhelming.

And then, just as suddenly as it had begun, it stopped.

They were floating above a frozen wasteland, the wind howling around them, the snow falling in thick, lazy flakes. The sky was grey and cold, the sun like a pale ghost half hidden behind the clouds.

But it was there at least. They were back in the real world, back in the lands beyond the Wall.

Joffrey gasped, his lungs filling with cold air. He felt his magic returning, his reserves replenishing as the ambient power of the world flowed back into him.

He hurried to stabilize the flying carpet, his hands trembling with exhaustion. The magical barrier flickered and faded, no longer needed in the real world.

”Are we... are we back?” Val asked, her voice shaking. ”Are we still close to Hardhome?”

”Yes, it worked,” Joffrey replied, his voice hoarse. ”We’re back, but...”

”But what?” Ned demanded, his eyes scanning the horizon. ”Where is that giant black creature that captured us?”

Joffrey closed his eyes, reaching out with his senses. He could feel the familiar pulse of the world, the flow of magic that permeated the air. But he could also feel something else...a cold presence, vast and ancient, pressing against the edges of his consciousness. It was the primordial ice creature, and it was still nearby.

”The phoenix must have read my thoughts to calculate our return,” Joffrey said, his voice grim. ”But the creature is young and inexperienced. It placed us very close to the point where we disappeared. That is not good. It means the shadow being is not too far away.”

Before he could say anything more, he noticed the phoenix. The creature had lost its flames, its feathers now a dull, muted gold. It looked like an ordinary bird, tired and weak, its energy completely spent. It was falling through the air, its wings too tired to beat.

Joffrey lunged forward, moving to the edge of the flying carpet and reaching out with his metal arm. He caught the creature before it could fall, scooping it up and holding it gently against his chest. The phoenix was warm, its heartbeat fast and faint, but it was still alive.

”Val,” Joffrey said, his voice urgent. ”Hold this. Keep it warm. It needs to rest.”

Val took the phoenix from him, her eyes wide with wonder. She cradled it against her chest, her spear forgotten at her feet. ”What happened to it? It was so bright and beautiful just moments ago.”

”It used all its energy to bring us back,” Joffrey replied. ”It needs time to recover. Phoenixes are resilient, but it’s just a babe. It may take days, perhaps weeks, before it regains its strength.”

Which meant that they were caught again by the shadow being...it would all be over for them. No more free passes out of that void.

He looked around, his eyes scanning the frozen landscape. They were still somewhere north of the Wall, that much was certain. But where exactly, he could not say.

The wind howled around them, and in the distance, he could feel the cold presence growing stronger, more defined. The creature was already moving towards them, drawn by the beacon that was his magic.

”We need to move,” Joffrey said, his voice sharp. ”Now. We need to get as far away from here as possible. If we become trapped again in that void, there will be nothing to save us.”

He directed the carpet south, his magic pushing it forward with renewed urgency. The others held on the best they could. Behind them, the sky grew darker, the shadows lengthening as the primordial creature began to stir.

”We’re not going to make it, are we?” Val asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Joffrey did not answer. He could only push the carpet faster, his heart pounding in his chest, his mind racing with plans and contingencies.

But deep down, he knew the truth. A confrontation was inevitable, and they were running out of time.
