Max Level Return—I'll Protect That Fragile One

She might have been sent to intern at Field No. 18 not necessarily by the town’s pharmacy staff’s orders, but very likely by someone from Medicine King City.

”Thank you, Granny,” Xu Xingguang thanked Granny Nan, then rode her balance bike back to the town.

Since then, no matter if it was raining or windy, Xu Xingguang would arrive at work on time.

After digging for 18 consecutive days, Xu Xingguang finally overturned the entire soil of Field No. 18. The overgrown grassland, once overturned, revealed the true nature of the soil.

Polluted by extermination chemicals, the entire soil of Field No. 18 turned jet black, and the originally fertile and loose soil became hard as glass.

The roots of those weeds were all poisoned and decomposed by the black soil.

Growing medicinal herbs out of it would indeed be strange.

Just as it was time to get off work, Xu Xingguang walked out of the field thoughtfully. As she was about to get in the car, Granny Nan called out to her.

”Having seen the condition of the field, have you given up?” Without waiting for Xu Xingguang to reply, Granny Nan said, ”Considering your proper attitude, I can recommend you to intern at another field.”

”Thank you, but there’s no need.” Xu Xingguang politely declined Granny Nan’s offer. She said, ”It’s true that the poisoned field can’t grow ordinary medicinal herbs, but I have other plans.”

”Oh?”

Granny Nan was taken aback and suspiciously stared at Xu Xingguang’s departing figure.

What was she planning to do?

The next day, when Granny Nan arrived punctually outside Field No. 18, the gate of the field was open, indicating that Xu Xingguang had arrived at work long ago.

Granny Nan hesitated for a moment, then crossed the gate and walked into the hillside, where she saw Xu Xingguang busy in a plot of the field.

She was wearing a black long-sleeved shirt and black pants, with a sun hat on her head and a basket containing seeds hanging from her waist. She was sowing seeds in the field.

Granny Nan hesitantly asked, ”What are you doing?”

Without raising her head, Xu Xingguang focused on sowing, ”Planting seeds.”

Staring at the seeds that looked like shattered glass, nearly transparent, Granny Nan asked in astonishment, ”What kind of seeds are those?”

Xu Xingguang softly replied, ”We call them ’Poisonous Widow’. I wonder what your Divine Martial Realm calls them.”

Poisonous Widow?

Granny Nan frowned; it was a name she hadn’t heard before.

Curious, she asked, ”What is the effect of this medicinal herb?”

Xu Xingguang said, ”The essence extracted from the fruit of the Poisonous Widow, just a drop, can poison a horse weighing over two hundred pounds.”

Granny Nan was utterly shocked, ”So you’re planting poison here?”

Xu Xingguang stopped her actions, looked up at Granny Nan, and said, ”The work manual doesn’t prohibit planting poisons, right? Poison plants are still plants.”

”Indeed, there’s no such regulation.”

”Then that’s fine.” Xu Xingguang continued sowing seeds. She said, ”Field No. 18 was indeed glorious once, but now it’s a poisonous field. Instead of letting it go to waste, why not turn it into a field for growing poisonous plants?”

”This is called making the best use of everything.”

Granny Nan felt that Xu Xingguang made some sense.

She simply squatted on the ridge, watching Xu Xingguang’s actions, and asked with concern, ”This field has lost its vitality; even poison plants need to absorb nutrients. Are you sure this plant can be successfully cultivated? Maybe it will be poisoned before it even sprouts.”

”No, it won’t.” Xu Xingguang said confidently, ”The plant I’m sowing is quite special; it doesn’t need much nutrition. It only needs one kind of nutrient.”

She looked up at Granny Nan, smiled innocently and gently, and said, ”Poison.”

The Poisonous Widow raised on toxic soil would have even more potent toxicity.

This field is practically a fertile land tailor-made for the Poisonous Widow medicinal plant!

Granny Nan was quite surprised. She looked deeply at Xu Xingguang and suddenly said, ”As long as you can successfully grow a plant on Field No. 18, your internship will be considered qualified.”

Granny Nan stood up to leave, but after taking two steps, she suddenly heard Xu Xingguang’s voice from the field, ”Elder Tan Nan, if I can make Field No. 18 perform its true function, could you write me a recommendation letter?”

Granny Nan paused slightly.

She turned back, her aged eyes moving up and down as she looked at Xu Xingguang, then asked, ”How did you find out?”

Xu Xingguang said, ”Black Eagle Tea is Imperial Tea; during the Xia Country Era, it was rare to get even an ounce of it for a thousand pieces of gold. Now, it must be even more precious.”

”I think, in this Cattle Hump, apart from Elder Tan Nan who retired from Medicine King City, there wouldn’t be a second person with it.”

”Also,” Xu Xingguang pointed at the black soil beside her and said, ”The weeds I saw when I arrived weren’t genuine weeds. They were Hunger Grass, meticulously planted, but poisoned dead in just one night.”
