Max Level Return—I'll Protect That Fragile One

There, Huo Wen’an witnessed the bustling pilgrims every day, kneeling on the prayer mats, sincerely wishing for blessings. Some wished for wealth, some for health and longevity, some for children, and some for a blissful love.

But he merely watched, as if he were a mere passerby in the human world.

The abbot of Guo’an Temple would take the time to chat with him every few days, but each time, Huo Wen’an remained silent.

Until three months later, when the abbot saw Huo Wen’an again, and as usual, asked if he had gained any new insights. The usually taciturn young man suddenly let out a mocking laugh.

He asked the abbot, ”People say Buddha is compassionate and saves all beings. Why doesn’t Buddha save me? Am I not worthy of being human?”

The abbot, startled by the boy’s hostility, frequently raised his eyebrows in surprise.

In front of the abbot, the boy took off his shirt, revealing a back full of scars and the glaring word ”slave.” He said, ”If Buddha can wipe away the scars on my back and make me as clean as a newborn, then I will believe in his compassion.”

The boy turned to the side, his dark eyes staring straight into the abbot’s clear, spring-like eyes, and asked, ”Can he?”

The abbot was speechless.

The boy sneered again and said, ”See, your Buddha’s compassion is because he lets you live carefree lives. Only when life is worry-free can you calmly eat vegetarian meals and recite scriptures.”

”But if you were thrown into a battlefield of corpses and blood for a few months, you’d raise a finger and curse, ’To hell with Buddha’s compassion.’”

After speaking, the boy put his shirt back on and said calmly and mockingly, ”Buddha never loved me, so why delude myself into thinking he would save me?”

”If staying here for a few months could make one forget past grievances and shame, and greet the future with a smile, then the Buddha you believe in must be a master of brainwashing, more powerful than a surgeon’s scalpel.”

He stared at the sarcasm in the boy’s eyes, at a loss for words.

Throughout his life, the abbot had successfully persuaded wicked people to lay down their butcher’s knives and reform.

But he could not persuade Huo Wen’an.

Because Huo Wen’an was not the demon holding a knife; he was the sacrificial victim.

The abbot, knowing he couldn’t change Huo Wen’an, could only notify Huo Canghai to pick him up.

Upon hearing the rebellious words Huo Wen’an had said from the abbot, Huo Canghai didn’t react much.

He merely asked the abbot a question, ”Abbot, in your opinion, is there still hope for this child?”

The abbot looked at him in surprise and said, ”That child never once wanted to give up on himself. Can’t you hear his desperate cries for help?”

If Huo Wen’an had truly given up on himself, why would he obediently stay in the temple, trying to find ways to save himself? He also wanted to be rescued, but he couldn’t find that hand to tightly hold onto him and pull him out of hell.

He had pleaded to Buddha for help.

But Buddha couldn’t hear his pleas.

Huo Canghai was stunned for a moment before taking Huo Wen’an down the mountain, returning to Divine Concealment Island.

As the memory ended, Huo Canghai gazed at Huo Wen’an, who appeared disinterested in everything, and suddenly asked him, ”I took you from that prison back to Divine Concealment Island. To you, does that count as someone who helped you?”

Others might not understand this question, but Huo Wen’an comprehended it immediately.

Huo Wen’an handed the camera to Zheng Lie and said to him, ”Take Fearless out to play.” Then he told Uncle Xia, ”Uncle Xia, Uncle Chun, you both go out.”

Uncle Chun hesitated as he looked at Huo Canghai.

Huo Canghai nodded, holding Andariel’s hand, and said to Uncle Chun and the bodyguards, ”You all go out first.”

Everyone quickly left, and the vast, gloomy hall was immediately left with just Huo Wen’an and the Huo Canghai couple.

Huo Wen’an stood up from the wheelchair, walked to the red sofa opposite Andariel, sat down, crossed his legs, and looked at Huo Canghai with investigative eyes.

After a long while, he finally said, ”I’ve always been grateful that you took me from that prison.” This was also why Huo Wen’an could tolerate Huo Canghai, being more forgiving to him.

People say Huo Wen’an is ruthless, recognizing no relations.

In fact, he values feelings more than anyone else.

Even though he knew that Huo Canghai only saved him because the Huo Family’s descendants weren’t very promising. He valued Huo Wen’an’s fearlessness and saw in him the qualities of a suitable heir for a prestigious family, which is why he saved him.

But Huo Wen’an wouldn’t resent Huo Canghai for this.
